Default Vintage Detroit Tigers silk pennant

I recently purchased this vintage Detroit Tigers silk pennant. Is anybody familiar with this pennant? Any information or an approx. date when it was issued?

Dennis

Default Banner

To me this looks like a common rendition of a High School Band color guard banner carried in parades or upon stadium entrances? How is it associated with Detroit Tigers?

Actually I was wondering the same thing. This might be High School, College, but not sure it would be Detroit Tigers banner.

I forgot to mention the vintage banner originated from an old trunk in the Detroit area.

The Tiger looks as if might be an early Detroit Tiger image.

I saw a couple of these at the National a few years back in John Kanuit's booth if I'm not mistaken. He weren't selling them as Detroit Tigers pieces, rather sports memorabilia in general. Could be Detroit, but difficult to say.

Funny, I just ran onto this on ebay last night. Thought it was pretty cool. Never seen it before but I guess there's a few out there.

Interesting that the ebay example has the white borders and no gold fringe. I definitely like Greg's better.

As for affiliation to the Detroit Tigers... I'm not sure either. But both the Reds and Tigers were known to produce these rectanular vertical silk banners between 1940 - 1970. I know of 2 others from Detroit and 3 from Cincinnati (all of which are related to the Major League franchises).

The 1951 dating (as written on the ebay example) would make sense for this one... In terms of structure, materials and style, it is very much like the Carstairs Banners that feature Connie Mack's Greatest Team (1951) and Baseball's Hall of Fame (1952).

Hunt's recently had one of these as well.... unfortunately, I can't post a link because they don't keep any history of their I/P Auctions (their history is only saved for Live Auctions).

Greg - Is this the Banner recently in Hunt's?
