Default My First Babe Ruth Auto

How cool is this?? It was a bit pricey, but I picked up this beautiful, autographed George Herman 'Babe' Ruth card at a garage sale of all places this past weekend!! I'm psyched to add this Babe signature to my collection!!

I hope this isn't the wrong place to put this, but I figured people would be entertained to see my good fortune.

It’s a marvelous card--obviously nice, neatly inked name.

George, you’re one unparalleled gamer, unequalled Yankee slugger!!!

Spelling "Yastrzemski" correctly without needing to look it up since the 1980s.

The Babe is lucky he died before Aaron caught him, but he must have been getting nervous around the time Topps realeased this card.. though his clean sig doesn't show it.

Unfortunately, Ruth died long before this card was produced... So it can't be his sig.

I, for one, applaud the sarcasm. Perfectly executed so that you're not quite sure.... unless you're sure.

I think whoever originally executed the signature was probably screwing around a bit as well.

ADDING- or maybe it was just warmup for the stack of Goudeys he had sitting on the table

Story sort of related. About 15 years ago a co-worker knew I collected cards and said his cousin had a Clemente auto he was looking to sell. Wanted $100, I told him to get it and bring it in and Id look at it and think about it. To make a long story short he comes in with a signed 1987 Topps Turn back the Clock Clemente card signed. Took me 30 minutes to explain how it was impossible to be his sig when it should of took 5 seconds.

Funny. I remember seeing a '73 Topps Clemente signed at a card shop as a kid (same shop I referred to in separate thread that opened and resealed packs)... I'm not an expert in release dates (and have little time now to research), but always thought, even at 12 that it must have been incredibly difficult to get that signed prior to NYE 1973.

That signature is going to look sweet when it gets snipped and shows up on a Legendary Cuts card!

I had a similar experience when someone tried to sell me a 1933 Goudey Ruth that their Great Grandfather collected and it has been passed down in the family for 80 years. It was a Dover Reprint and had reprint stamped on the back. Again... this should have been a 5 second conversation but it went on forever. The family was convinced that this card was from 1933 and nothing I could say or do could change their mind. "You don't understand. We've had this for 80 years." Worst of all really was that they left thinking I was the biggest liar, thief, con artist imaginable.

Well, there's been so much negativity floating around lately, that I decided to do a little thought experiment. I wanted to see if the comments regarding my 'pick up' would venture into the deliriously negative sniping or if they would tend to be more along the lines of, "Sorry, buddy, you got taken." I'm happy to report that the people who chimed in were the latter and not the former. My faith in (baseball card collecting) humanity has been nicely restored!!!

Oh, and I had a hidden message in my original post. Just string the red letters together...

So good!! I love little social experiments

Questions- is that some sort of photo shop magic, or real? Do you actually have in hand and/or know story behind sig?

I did a search for 1973 Babe Ruth cards and another for Babe Ruth autographs. I brought the best images I could find into photoshop and got to work combining the pictures and trying to make it look authentic. I'm glad some of you got a laugh out of it!

That is awesome. I wish I were a photoshop wizard (and had a nice scanner) so that my monthly pick up posts wouldn't rely on the oft crappy auction photos.

I absolutely love the idea.. However part of me wishes it had gone further and allowed for some more intensive and thorough unsubstantiated and uniformed "I know what's going on" speculation. However since it really never did devolve into that.. Or into a public haranguing for having been duped (as in the "you sucka" comments) is reinforcement that all in all this is a great community.

Can't wait to see what you think next.
