If it’s authentic, it is a trimmed carte de visite (cdv). The noted date of 1871 written on the back would fit with the time fame for cdv’s. The player’s uniform also fits that time frame. Nice image.

The photo should be on a thin sheet of photographic paper glued onto a thicker mount. There should not be a dot pattern in the image when looking under magnification and the cdv should not fluoresce (glow) when held under a black light.

As Rob noted, if it's genuine it appears consistent in age with the 1871 written on back.
