Default April Pickups

In March, I welcomed my first child into this world. When I got home from the hospital with my adorable little boy, I was greeted by a package from Brian Powell with the gift of four of his incredible custom cards. These aren't exactly "vintage", but they are well at home in my safe among my other Mantles.

Please pardon the picture quality, but I did not want to take/share anything that others could then re-use. Thanks Brian!

Chris, you are most welcome, my friend. I am just so happy for you and your wife, and glad to hear everyone's A-OK!. I am so pleased your fantasy 1954 Wilson Franks cards arrived at your home the day you brought your wife and son home!

Just being picky, but is that spot on Jack's forehead in the pinkish-lavender background version just a dust fleck, or did I somehow miss that? Please let me know because I want you to have a "good" one.

Thanks for the compliment, Zach, I worked long and hard with two computer graphic artists on those cards! I am very pleased with how they turned out. Funny, sort of, but I designed them with the precise same borders as the original Wilsons. During the cutting process, the sheets "traveled" just a tsch, but it was a tsch too much, creating the same off-center problem as on the original 1954 Wilson Franks. I had specially-chosen semi-gloss card stock, to replicate the original sheen. When the printing was done, there were no more sheets to do any more to try to get more centered cards!!!!

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I shan't translate, because Leon Luckey would heartily disapprove of my language, which I try not to use those words anyway, but oh was I irritated.)

----Brian Powell

While not earth shattering, these are some solid ex-exmt pick ups and mark some decent progress for my '65 Topps set. I have focus issues, and this set has been on the backburner for a while. For the last month or so, however, I have been starting to think I might actually finish eventually. It will be pretty nice when I am finished. I am also sharing these because they are from Greg Morris Cards, and there was at least one thread asking about his auctions. No problems here.

Brian, I think that's just the glare. Cards are perfect in hand, and the backs look centered enough for me Many thanks!

Really nice looking 1965s. I will also offer my endorsement of Greg Morris cards. Have never spent big dollars there, but the few cards I got there matched the scans and looked great.

Appreciate it! I purchased some cards from Greg Morris when I was finishing up my '53 Topps set. Good transaction then, too.

Thanks all.
Yeah, this was a big add to the collection. The card is in amazing condition for it's age and considering how it would have been packaged. I'm told it used to belong to Bill Mastro, actually.

Terrific piece! It's odd but there are a few OPC tattoos that are insanely tough. For example, I've owned a couple unopened Mantle auto balls but only seen one portrait. You seem to be on fire lately. Congrats!

Great P/U's, SFMS! Congrats on being so close to completing your set! That must be a great feeling.

These 3 arrived Friday. A big shout out to KCRfan1 (Lou) who not only gave me a great deal, he also absorbed a big hunk of the shipping and threw in this signed Johnny Bench team card for me!

Can't thank you enough, Lou! 2 big cards for me knocked off my want list!

Thank you Irv, while statistically the end is near, I have a long, long ways to go in regards to the cards I am still needing.

Beautiful centering on your sharp looking new Rosen, that is one of the toughest low numbers. The RR is pretty sharp looking too.

Thanks!

I just noticed, looking at Rosen's left side, the Indian looks different to me and there also seems to be spot/portion of the card in that area that didn't see any ink?
The only other cards I own that show that area somewhat are, Lemon and Garcia, and all 3 look different to me? (Posting all 3 pics for easier comparison)

Any thoughts as to why?

The Lemon and Garcia, at least in the scans, look fairly similar. The logo on the Rosen is different ....not sure if it is due to the Lemon and Garcia being from a different series than the Rosen?

That might have something to do with it, or I was thinking home/away jerseys, maybe?

The Lemon Indian logo almost looks like the Indian is wearing a hat with a feather in it, while the Indian on Garcia's sleeve looks like it has combed hair and is wearing a wide yellow sweat band.

Either way, like you say, they are different than the Rosen Indian for some reason so I am going to have to dig into this further to see what I can come up with?

Didn't really have any luck, other than to say, the one on Garcia's sleeve doesn't look like any that I could find.

https://www.google.ca/search?q=cleve...JLEe27mRj-Kw2r
http://toddradom.com/2016-cleveland-...f-wahoo-veeck/

https://indiancountrymedianetwork.co...f-wahoo-logos/

The Rosen logo looks faded or it was imposed later maybe as there is something clearly going on there where that pointed section is clearly, imo, not a part of his jersey. From the looking I did, all his copies have this same error/anomaly.

Picked up two more cards for my Aaron run. The first is a really nice 67 Kahns. The second is a 65 OPC #2 Batting Leaders. The OPC was a LOT tougher to find than I thought. This card completes the OPC part of my run.

some of those OPC's are tough to find.

The hardest in my Lou Brock run was the 67 "Cards Clubbers"

Nice pick-up. The Seaver is from 1967 and is his earliest "card". In my opinion, it is much more desireable than his '67 Topps rookie. Me likey

Thanks, it is so much rarer than his Topps rookie, took me me a while to find one.

Cashed in some COMC store credits to buy all these cool cards:

1988 Perez-Steele Great Moments - [Base] #34 - Ray Dandridge /5000 [PSA/DNA*Certified*Auto]

Some other cool cards; lucked into finding the 1959 Mail-In today for $50, and that will probably go to eBay to pay for my entries into Burl's 1952 Set Break.

Congratulations, Chris. You win the thread with the best new "pickup" of the month. And those are nice custom cards, too. Very nice of Brian.

Default Yellow House Pickup

It still amazes me how many variations there are in the 1952 Topps set. The Campos card seems to have the most variations. How many will be recognized as a commonly accepted variation is anyone's guess.....

Was that a recent purchase, Zach? I was following one on E-Bay not that long ago but missed the closing.

I agree with you, and although I am not familiar with a lot of other sets, I'd say this set likely has the most?

Curious, what's your take on that Rosen card I posted? To me it looks like something was added to the pick (a layover?) before they decided on the final one they'd go with?

Nice card Irv. Yes, this was a recent purchase......I don't know if the '52 Topps set has the most variations - there are certainly a number of other sets with quite a few variations. Maybe others with more experience in the set like Patrick or Ted can chime in.

I was going to add, but I seen you edited your post, Zach, and that is, all the Rosen cards seem to be the same.
It looks like something is odd not only above the Indian on Rosen's left arm/sleeve, but it also looks like something else, like another jersey, below it too?
Either way, it is something we'll likely never be able find out definitively?

Default '59 Gibson RC

Been looking for a reasonably well-centered one for a while now. Was very pleased with the eye appeal in-person when it showed up today as well

A couple recent P/U's. One more to add to my small multiplayer collection I have going, and my first Koufax card.
