Default Beckett vs. the Lipset Encyclopedia

Posted By: Chris B.

Hello all,

Trying to settle a debate with a friend and fellow prewar collector. His only source for info is a beckett annual guide, and he seems to think that this is all he needs. I have advised him to buy the Lipset Encyclopedia, as it contains much more information than a price guide does. He has steadfastly refused, despite my arguments -- can someone else back me up on the quality of Lipset's book for a collector trying to learn more about vintage cards?

Lipset's book is a must. If only he would take the time to continue volumes 4-6.

BTW, Beckett's big book pales to Mr. Lemke's too.
Its organization is weak and confusing, and the font/type size is ridiculously small (so too the pics, which are often too small to be of any use whatever).

Lipsets work is in a different relm! He is a scholar of our hobby. Work like his cannot be measured in dollars and cents! Can the same be said of Beckett and its endless self promotion?..

I am very much a newbie to vintage collecting. The first reference I got was Beckett, the second Krause - the Standard Catalog. I like the Beckett because it provided consise lists of major league, minor league, and southern league players (T206). I generally only go to Krause for reference now, though. I must admit I am only active in T206 collecting at this time.

I bought Lipset later, and would buy it today (this minute) if I didn't have it. I is a different world of information; the data it contains doesn't exist elsewhere in such an organized manner.

It is available in reprint for only $30 for volumes 1-3 on ebay - why wouldn't someone go for it.

I just searched ebay for "Lipset encyclopedia baseball", got two hits, here is the first. Both were buy it now for $30.

Plan to jump on ebay tonight to pick up a copy of the Lipsets Encyclopedia. How does this differ if at all from just buying back issues of Volumes 1,2 and 3?
Are any of the other back issues especially good for T-206's?
Thanks Guys.

They are all a trip--and you needn't buy ALL of them.

Lipset's work is awesome, but if your especially into t206, I like to use Bill Heitman's short work, "The Monster."

Its kind of outdated a little bit, but still a must in my opinion and contains a nice checklist of all the possible back combos.

Mark Peavy has a short work also called "T206."
