Default Old Acme Press Photos With Red Ink Smudges

Posted By: David R

I have a bunch of old baseball photos that are quite nice. The problem is that they look like there must have been some kind of red ink writing on the face of the pictures. The pictures now have red smudges across the front of them because someone apparently tried to wipe off the red ink. They say "Photo By Acme Newspictures, Inc., etc." on the back.

Any ideas on what those red smudges are and how or if I can get them off?

The photos often had editorial marks, like cropping marks, in various colors inks and grease pens. If it's grease pen, you might be able to clean/rub it off.

Also note that ACME was an old and defunct company and the stamp shows the photos are old. ACME became part of UPI in the 1950s, losing its name in the process.
