in my 1981 baseball price guide it shows a collection of unopened packs (presumably from barry halper) that includes a 33 baseball goudey

I've seen unopened packs of Goudeys, Play Balls, Sports Kings, Diamond Stars and a bunch of 30s non-sports packs. They are rare, but they are out there.

I would think a back scan would be crucial for proper assesement , or did I miss it?

i went through the auction, with so many super high end cards you would think they could offer more scans and a little more info on the write ups...not to impressive, but they will hammer you with 1000 emails before the auction ends.

Hi Rand, are you suspicious that it is a fake Sports Kings wax pack? Or are you suspicious that it is not unopened but sealed back together?

Hello all,

Back in the early 1990's, I met an old time collector who had some amazing things. We lost contact with each other about the year 2000. This past week, he was back in town and we got together for a few days and talked about his collecting back in the 1950's and his cards. I asked about buying the Curtis Ireland Candy cards from him that I found but couldn't afford (there were about 20 including a Ty Cobb) and large size Gypsy Queens that were trimmed but, sadly for me, he said he had already sold them.

One of the things I remember him telling me was a find back in the early 1980's and had him tell the story again. H said back then, someone found two boxes of 1933 Goudeys in the storage room of an old drugstore. The person who found them didn't know what exactly they were but knew they were valuable. My friend (Mentor) was called in to help with the purchase.

He said the boxes had sat on the shelves for years and that the cards on the bottom of each pack had the chewing gum stuck on them and that the further down in the box the packs were, the more attached the gum was. Yes, they opened ALL the packs and tried to put a set together but couldn't. They also threw the boxes and wrappers away instead of saving them.

He said that is one find that upsets him just because of how much each pack would be worth today. He said the thought of what MIGHT be in an individual pack would be worth more than the individual cards because of the gum sticking to each bottom card.

David

PS, Two cards I know he is consigning to an auction soon are a W519-2 Babe Ruth and a T206 Tinker with an American Beauty 460 back.

hey King, great to hear from you!!! with all the accusations memory lane has been accused of...(new psa cert #ers, shill bidding auctions, blowing up final prices, psa relationship, ect...) its hard to take what they have for auction seriously..i look at that pack, looks very loose, minimal write up, no back scan, This is super rare right? no mention of the card inside....just hard to take in. i have 0 confidence in Gai and ML, especially after reading this board for the last 6 months.

....is it resealed? thats my concern.

I've seen several unopened SK packs. They seem to be more common, in my experience, than other 30s packs. Each one them, you could tell what card was in the pack. The best one I saw was a pack that had Babe Diedrickson in it.

I'm not going to bid on the pack because I don't know anything about packs or wrappers, but I'm still interested as I am sure many are.

Jay, how many cards came per pack? 1?

the 33 goudey big league gum packs had 1 card and the wrapper was transparent(sport kings too?) so you could see who you were getting. they are not telling who the card is in the auction so it must not be ruth,cobb,hubbell....can a graded pack (sealed) be considered e/mint-nm or mint and the gum is stuck to the(a) card?

Back in the mid 90s,I owned two unopened 33 Goudeys,a few PLayballs and one Sport Kings, all purchased either from mark murphy (CT:"The baseball card kid") or at the EC national.
Sold them since then. Never had any intention of opening them. Also owned a few 33 goudey wrappers (sold those, too)

The lot is described wrong. You would think that they would be able to distinguish between '33 Goudey Baseball and Goudey Sport Kings. Come on guys, get your act together.

I believe technically it should be titled a 1934 Goudey Sports Kings wax pack. With or without the Goudey is fine. From the copyright cards that were auctioned off 6 months to a year ago, it is clear the Sports Kings set was released during the winter of 1934, after the 1933 Goudey set (last series printed in December) and before the 1934 Goudey set (first printing in May, 1934 I think). All the copyright dates for the Sport Kings cards were 1934.

Tom is correct. GAI slabbed it wrong. Their tag says "Goudey Baseball" and it should say "Goudey Sport Kings".

1933 or 1934? You may be technically right, but Sport Kings are generally considered to be a 1933 set. (This is like the debate around the US Caramel set. It's usually classified as a 1932 set, but was clearly printed after the 1932 season was over.)

King- I never thought of it but it would make perfect sense that the Sport Kings would be released in the winter months of 1934. The company needed something to market between baseball seasons, and Sport Kings has hockey players, skaters, dog sledders, and fall sports like basketball, with minimal emphasis on baseball. It was clearly a cold weather issue (okay, Duke Kahanamoku was a surfer, but you get the point).

I card per pack. Although SK wrappers are more opaque than the baseball wrappers, it is still very easy to make out which card is in it.

Jay, I have seen quite a few of these packs too. There was a fairly large find of Sport Kings packs in the 1980's. Quite a few of them were opened up, but the gum left a horrific stain on the backs of the cards. I think that Rob Foster was the one who had them.

I guess the large print on the front of the pack "Sport Kings" threw GAI off. As for the genuniness of the pack, I would say that a GAI package combined with a Memory Lane auction does not seem very promising; i.e., run for your life.

What is the specific reason(s) that makes it definitely printed after the 1932 season? Thanks.

Read this old thread.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/153652/message/1125497281/Apparent+dating+error+in+R328+Standard+Catalog+lis ting

I'm sure Hal will be willing to chip into this discussion.

Basically, the cards contain statistics, dates/ages and trade info that could only occur after the 1932 season was over.
