Let's Talk T207 -Toughest Mainstream T Set

I know there are tougher T sets but I feel T207 is the toughest mainstream set. Alot of research has been done on this set (Tim)! but these are my thoughts. Toughest card Donlin. Next Ward Miller and then Rath. The back's come in many different combo's and just when you think you are close the reality sets in. My best guess is that there are less than 10 full sets in the hobby. Please share your thought's and experience with this set no matter if just starting or all the way there.

Having put together 3 nearly complete sets over the past 5 years (I sold 2 and have 1 pretty nice one left)here are my observations.
The only card I never owned and so the toughest card for me is Irv Lewis / no emblem on sleeve.
I agree with Patrick on the next 3 cards as I have been looking for upgrades and they just don't seem to be available.. Donlin, Rath and Ward Miller. Also Bauman and Kuhn seem to be pretty scarce. I think this is definitely a tougher set than the t205's and t206's (not including big 4)to complete but that's what makes it fun.

I'm a little over halfway finished with the set but don't really think I'll ever finish it off. A LOT of tough common cards which cost A LOT of money are in the set. Much tougher than t205, t206, etc... and forget about finding "high grade"(NM or better) examples...from what I've seen they don't exist.

Even as a type collector the T207's offer something for everyone. As a "back" collector it certainly has one of, if not "the", rarest back of any mainstream set. The Red Cross is about 3x more rare than the Ty Cobb back of the T206 set. (I am not at all convinced it's a T206 but that's for another thread).....I also don't think the T207's will ever get the respect they deserve as they aren't as colorful as the other T's and E's.....

Though I do like the set, the corpse-like appearance of the faces (powdered and rouged appearing) is unsettling (chuckle).

I once bought a t207 Gardner for $10 at a local silent auction. I had no idea this was shortprinted or rare, and when I sold it on ebay, I was thrilled to get $150 for it. The SP's are just a lot less known that their bigger brother.

I remember Larry Fritsch being quoted as Saying "The 207 set is the most difficult of the T card sets to put together". To complete a decent set is what I believe he meant. He then went to say that it was due to the surface cracking, and the shear rarity of many of the cards. To many, they are dull, flat, and boring. But for some unknown reason, I find them kind of interesting. And beautiful in their own way.

I'm very prejudiced about this set because I love the moody almost surreal cards. That said, I STILL think it is an excellent investment as completing the set is a real journey and it is a natural place to go after completing the T206 (minus the Big 4) and T205 sets. I agree with the Lewis no emblem being toughest and Ward Miller and Mike Donlin being numbers 2 and 3. Rath and the boys are all tough but for some reason finding a Fournier, a Wallace and a McKechnie in excellent or better condition is almost impossible. Some of the "commons" with Recruit backs are really tough, like Ellis, Stovall and Kling and of course Cicotte's popularity and Hooper being in the Hall, makes them tough also. There are 1 or 2 "commons" which have not been mentioned and are extremely tough but I am keeping my mouth shut about them until after I find the upgrades in ex or better

It will be interesting to see what the 207 Buck Weaver goes for on E bay tomorrow. Finding this card in the stated condition is tuff. I have been following it since day 1.

Birmingham, Block, Butcher, Downey, Scott, Steele were the final six cards for me. LOTS of tough cards in this set. I really enjoy the blurbs on the backs of the cards.

but I think the t207s are really nice looking. The art of the players on the cards might be the nicest of all of the T issues.

oh man... I don't have any and now you have me thinking of starting a set...

maybe I should start with just the HOFers --- only 13 in the set, correct?

I've got about 40 of them, but haven't added any since December. Some of them (Cole, Konetchy, Needham) are just inexcusably ugly, but almost half the cards in the set are very attractive. Unfortunately, some of the best-looking cards are also some of the rarest cards, so you'll have to pay a pretty penny for them, but there are some nice-looking commons in there as well.

In my prejudiced mind, there are no cards prettier than an exmt or better T207 with no crazing, sharp corners and no gloss cracks or creases, with the possible exception of the E94s. I guess to each his own...

I completed my T207 "set" in 1977. This was only after a few very large finds and the discovery of two different Lewis's. It was also long after I had completed T205 and 206. The last card I needed to complete T207 was Graham, Philly N.L. It took five more years to replace that card with one that was ex/mt. The next to last card I needed for the set was Speaker. Back when all cards were affordable, T207 was the toughest of the three(205, 206 and 207) to piece together by far. And, oh how I wish Joe Jackson had made the set. I wrote a small book on T207 which has never been published, but I have to say it was a lot of fun to write.

PS...not sure if you remember, but I'm the kid (I guess I was about 18-20 at the time), who loaned you a vhs copy of "Pride of the Yankees" at a show I think in Anaheim way back in the early 80's.

I remember BHN used to give out the Buck Barker award to collector/dealers for their contributions to the hobby. What ever happened with that and does someone have a list of winners? I'm sure it would be a who's who of the hobby with no Mr Mint in sight
