Default 1916 Joe Jackson articles

Posted By: Scott

I just finished reading two "must have" articles about Joe Jackson, courtesy of the link Max provided (see below). If you are a Joe Jackson fan, you HAVE to read these.

"The Man Who Might Have Been the Greatest Player in the Game"

Not only an ironic title (this was written in 1916!), but also some amazingly prophetic quotes: "In Jackson, nature combined the greatest gifts any one ball player has ever possessed but she denied him the heritage of early advantages and that well balanced judgement so essential to the full development oh his extraordinary powers....So strange a medley of contraditory traits, of weaknesses and errors...brilliant in his success, startling in his manifold failures."

And my favorite: "He is a character that has never been exploited, that probably never will be exploited until he has passed forever from the diamond and given the perplexed scribes a proper perspective of his mingled weaknesses and dazzling talents."

"The Famous Joe Jackson Deal" (1916)

- what irony! The Yankees complaining that the Indians dealt Jackson to the White Sox, making them a stronger team!

It's not the real thing, but some are on line January 7 2005, 7:52 PM

Issues from 1909 to 1918 can be searched on-line at

http://www.aafla.org/5va/baseballmagazine_frmst.htm

While it's not a substitute for the real magazine, it provides an opporunity to read the magazines without causing harm to the original fragile copies, which have a tremendous aesthetic collectible value.
