Default Trivia Challenge

Without looking him up, except in Baseball Reference, what was Wilbur Snapp's claim to fame?

Didn't he teach a young Connie Mack how to fake the sound of foul tips?

Close --- Sort of

You might just take a wild stab at the answer and get it right.

Well, I could not find him on BBR...so, I'm calling uncle.

I have one for you though:

On this date (4/26) in 1902, Addie Joss made his major league debut by pitching a one-hitter with the only hit being by Jessie Burkett.

What other future Hall-of-Famer debuted with a one-hitter?

Deflection is not permitted in this thread.

Hint: Snapp is from Springfield, Ohio.

That hint did not help me.

I was trying to recall something like a sports-related museum or HOF there, but I think I was confusing it with Springfield, MA.

Wilbur lived in Springfield for many years, but his notoriety occurred after he left. He was playing at a ball park though named after a major league pitcher.

Okay, I'm now guessing he's some sort of entertainer. Was the stadium he was 'playing' in Shea Stadium? I know there was a Shea who pitched.

I did find the answer using Baseball Reference, but it still feels like cheating so I will just keep the answer to myself so you can continue the fun.

No, Greg, but a threesome was involved that did not include Crackle and Pop.

Did you say it was or was not Shea Stadium?

Since you said it was a threesome, I'll have to run out any guest musicians that the Beatles may have used.

Before Raymond has a heart attack, I am going to post the final clue.

Here's Wilbur, what did he do, where did he do it and who threw him out?

The organist who got thrown out of a game for playing 'Three Blind Mice'

LOL

Now, go back and answer my trivia question.

Correct - pretty amazing debuts. Seems like Luis Tiant may have had something close to that in his debut...I'll have to look it up. Tiant, of course, along with Minnie Minoso, should also be Hall-of-Famers! Before rose, before bonds, and before clemens!

Yup, Luis pitched a complete game four-hit shutout against the Yankees on July 19, 1964.

Default Okay, Here's One For Yah

When THIS player ended his career, he was third in most games played in centerfield (National League). Google if you must, but more fun if you don't.

Doc, Don't get all 1800's on me. Remember, you are the person who once said you were old enough to own your own T206.

Think post 1900's.

I do however owe you a card for your very correct guess. If only I knew which time zone to send it to.

George trailed O'Rourke and Stovey when he retired in 1892.

There may be other correct answers to this question because everyone retires at a different time, but George may well be the first correct answer, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Yes, Curt Flood is my solution to this quiz. Although Gore may be accurate as well. I wouldn't know, but I'll take Frank's word for it - after all, he's almost old enough to have his picture on a Old Judge card
