Default n172 old judge uncatalogued?

Posted By: Martin Neal

I just purchased my first n172 Old Judge card. It should arrive by the end of the week. I was wondering if there is a site that shows all the different variations and poses. I checked it out on Vintagecardprices.com and it is a different from the one they have listed. Is there a premium for uncatalogued n172s?

Krause's Standard Catalog does a pretty exhaustive study of all known players and poses. If you find a pose that is unknown, it may or may not be important. If you find a player that is unknown, that would be monumental.

The player is Fred Carroll. The Old Judge advertising is located in the upper right as opposed to an example that shows the advertising directly above his head. There is also something strange about the caption at the bottom, but I cannot make out what it says. I will post when I receive the card. Thanks

My guess is it is a common pose. Not every nuance of every known card appears in the checklist.

Martin,

We only have about 1500 images of the 3500+ cards in the set. With the banner in a different postition usually is just an indicator of the year. Dave Levin as far as I know is one of the best in regards to OJ's and his site is

Martin:

The semicircular "Old Judge Cigarettes" wording on the 1887 cards can appear in a banner, a rectangle and a few oddly shaped containers that can appear to the left, above or to the right of the player image.

I am not aware that these, in and of themselves, are viewed as variations (like poses or team designations would be) or would have any particular value associated with them.

The Dalrymple examples below show various shapes, sizes and placements.

BTW - the pictures came from Bobby's site and Dave Levin's site is www.gfg.com

be considered different for cataloging purposes even though they appear quite different in typeface and layout.

These are from my personal collection

There are 3 poses for Fred Carroll for Pittsburg in Lipset's catalog.
From Lew Lipset's catalog: The easiest way to determine an 1887 card is by the brand "Old Judge Cigarettes", which is always either in a semi-circular band at the top of the card, in a similar band at the upper corner of the card, or in a small dark rectangle at the top of the card.

Sounds like you have the circular band at the upper corner. 1887 card.

Don't think this is a variation. If it is someone on the board can correct me.

Thanks Joe
