Default Net54 Poet's Corner

Feel free to add your card related poetry here. And let me know if I should chuck it all and pursue the lucrative career of the professional poet.

Roses are red
Violets are purple
This poem is an example
of when cards turn brains mushy
like that of a nurple

There once was a man from Nantucket
Played 500 games in the Major Leagues
Never saw himself on cardboard, despite his need for speed
Finally got a Conlon after he kicked the bucket.

There once was a Group called Net54.
Who dreamed of old baseball cards galore.
Their card knowledge was great.
Except when it turned to hate.
And called each other a whore.

In the digital realm where history's embrace,
Lies a forum, a gathering, a collector's base.
Net54baseball, where memories are traced,
A place where the past and present are interlaced.

With threads woven from the fabric of the game,
Where enthusiasts, their passions aflame,
Discuss, trade, and cherish without aim,
The cards and legends that brought baseball fame.

From T206s to modern day feats,
Each post, a story, where time retreats.
A community bound by wins and defeats,
Sharing tales as their heart beats.

Here, knowledge is a treasure, shared and sought,
Of rare finds and auctions, battles fought.
In this digital haven, time is naught,
For each card, a piece of history bought.

Amidst the chatter and the lively debates,
The essence of baseball, this forum celebrates.
A digital diamond where fate allocates,
Friendships and finds, that destiny creates.

So here's to Net54baseball, a unique space,
Where the love for the game finds its rightful place.
Through pixels and posts, collectors embrace,
The timeless allure of the baseball chase.

What are the odds of a Nantucket baseball card connection?

For cards I admittedly get spastic
For images rare and fantastic
But Ill be damned if Im paying
For some 18 year old saying
"Its a 3" then heat sealing the plastic. An Old Timer

Mathewson, Clemente and Mays,
Collecting your cards I spend days,
I search high and low,
Attending card shows,
I don't think this is just a phase.

Default Jiggs Donahue

When in your vaunted pride you hear
The roaring welcome of the stands,
The unleashed hero-tinted cheer,
The echo of applauding hands,
Lift up your head above all men –
Think how these thousand worship you –
Go to it – eat it – pal – and then
Remember Donahue

When headlines on the Printed Page
Rate you the Ruler of the Field –
The war god of a golden age
That reels before your lance and shield –
Take in the boost of voice and pen,
Say, “Here at last, I’ve drawn my due” –
Swell with the thrill of it – and then
Remember Donahue

What is there left to curb you now?
The world is at your steel shod feet,
The laurel grips your clammy brow
Where no man comes who might compete:
So lift your beaker up again,
Nor turn to Time’s remorseless cue –
Here’s how – Cobb, Matty, Walsh – and then
Drink one to Donahue.
— Grantland Rice, “Donahue Eulogy”

-1909-

An intense young man approaches the plate.

The restless crowd awaits…

Anticipation on their faces.

"How will this young man rate?".

A hit to the gap for extra bases.

"That's Ty Cobb, soon to be Great".

Here is my bitterness in couplets entry...

The Acrimony of the Unchecked Box
(or Ode on a Completion Burn)

while school was out in the scorching summer of ‘75,
by the day I was feeling more dead than alive,

because a mustachioed Texas hurler by the name of Steve,
made my brothers and I bitterly grieve,

for no matter how many times we trodded over the melting asphalt,
that damn drugstore had no packs containing the last card we needed, Foucalt!!!

I scream to the dark heavens bursting with drops,
why must you always rain on my collecting parade, Topps!!!!!!!!!!!

Back in the '50's, when I was a young "snapper",
I bought Topps & Bowman and threw away the wrapper.

I kept the cards & the gum, the latter to chew,
and the cards went into a box--I never "threw"!

My teeth rotted away & today I have none,
but I always enjoyed just chewing the gum!

The cards I still had until recent days
when I sent most out to auction @ REA's!

I got a good price from "1-penny" cards,
but letting them go remains very hard.

The moral of the story: If you have a collection--
don't sell them off w/out thorough reflection!

Ode to Monte Cross:

Oh, that handle bar mustache,
And that flamboyant hair,
But that T206 Tolsoti,
That, I can only dream to dare.

Wrote this years ago...

Casey at the Bat (circa 2007)

The word came out from Mudville
Where Mighty Casey played
A company had bought the team
A billion's what they paid

The team would stay in Mudville
They'd only change their name
On BACO Field in Mudville
The Juiced would play their games

The new emblem looks really cool
An "X" of two syringes
With a pocket to hold needles
For those injecting binges

Now Mighty Casey came to camp
Huge as he could be
Last season he weighed 2-1-5
He now weighed 3-0-3

The games began the home runs flew
Two teams won 99
And now there was just one game left
The pennant on the line

The outlook soon was looking bleak
With O'Reilly on the mound
A bases loaded triple
Brought three runs around

And although the Juiced would score
In the 7th on a fly
The fans began to worry
When the 8th inning went by

The top of the 9th went 1-2-3
Half an inning left to play
The score still sat at 3-1
Not much was left to say

The season looked like it was done
When Jackson took strike 3
And then Thompson followed suit
They could not hit McGee

But Martinez hit one in the gap
Took third without a slide
And when McGee beaned Stephens
The crowd, it almost died

Cuz strolling up there to the plate
As no one could deny
Was Casey Mighty Casey
With a glimmer in his eye

The pitcher wound and hurled the sphere
Like shot out from a gun
Casey looked and held his swing
The ump, he called strike one

Strike two the second one went by
The crowd groaned in alarm
Casey shook his head
And stuck a needle in his arm

The crowd now watches silently
As out there Casey stands
100 times he's hit it out
One more chance in his hands

And now the pitcher looks around
And now he takes the sign
And now he throws a bullet
Oh, the pitch looks mighty fine

Oh, somewhere in this favored land
The Sun is shining bright
The band is playing somewhere
And somewhere hearts are light

And somewhere men are laughing
About things that they've heard said
But there is no joy in Mudville
Mighty Casey has dropped dead

It's such an enjoyable habit

To find a great card and then grab it

But not so much fun

When it comes back a one

And you dread your decision to slab it

Jeff, loved it. You should send an autographed copy to Barry Bonds, and maybe Jose Consesco and Roger Clemens.
