Default Suggestions for what packs to buy for young baseball fan

Hi all,

I'm wandering over here from the pre-war side looking for some advice.

I'd like to buy a box of 2016 season cards as a gift for a young collector. I'm not looking for any of the fancy cards -- just something as close to the old days of 36 packs to a box with 15+ cards to a pack. Looking for something inexpensive, as the gift recipient is going to play with them and enjoy them for what they are...

Any suggestions? (Spent some time googling, but I just keep coming up with the 3 cards per pack, 5 packs per box stuff...)

Thanks,
Steve

Cool NEW cards?

Hi,Steve, with Topps as the main brand, you may have a problems with the dull new base set? It would seem less cards for a higher price has been the tend for a few years, now?I have not gotten any cards sense 2014 & have no reason"s to buy any? I'm not a gamble type of collector, like so many are today?I have a big problem with a insert priced at $50.00 this month & 1 month later it"s price has drop? The age of your young collectors, should also have some thing to do with what your looking to buy & if the are wanting to get into card/sports field?Sorry,I don"t know if this helps or not? Thanks,Robert!

Yeah, the basic Topps set is a "never go wrong" kind of set. One of the fun ones, due to the insert autos, memorabilia, and having random people and inserts in the packs, is the Allen & Ginter set.

This one looks cheap right now, but has 36 packs of 7 cards each with some numbered cards and is based on the phone app cards.

Here is the Topps base set (cards 352-701):

Those would be my recommendations.

I agree with swarmee.

I would add one other suggestion. If you really want the "feel" of the old packs and card stock, my son really likes Topps Heritage. It's more expensive than Topps Bunt, but the high number boxes are selling for under $50.

I always buy my son 80s and90s hobby boxes it's about a quarter a pack . We boy he find enjoyment in these older boxes . In the new stuff I but either opening day or a few packs of heritage , archives , gypsy queen. It depends on what he wants . But I find he likes ripping packs more then the actual cards . So
We have a lot of 80s stuff nowadays lol.

Hi Steve

An option may be to check your local Walmart or Target stores. They usually carry Blaster boxes of various brands and sports. Usually these boxes are $19.99 and have 8-10 packs in them. Sometimes at certain times of the year, Target will offer sale prices on these blaster boxes. Meijer & Toy R US also carry blaster boxes, but tend to be more expensive than at Walmart or Target.

Walmart & Target also carry complete Topps baseball sets every year.

Thank you all for the good suggestions -- I have lots of options now to check out, and I appreciate the quick responses!

Side notes, I have given 80's and 90's packs in the past, as I enjoy opening them, too... But now it's time to give some current stuff so that he can find his favorite players.

Thanks all,
Steve
