Default Grade/Regrade These 1956 Koufax & Mays

Bought this Koufax raw on ebay. I didn't notice the tilt until I had it in hand. It's not huge and I still think front centering looks great overall. The card itself is really sharp and clean. The back is WAY OC, but it doesn't seem like that's even a consideration as long as the letters aren't cut off.

It should get high grades for surface, edges, and corners. Does the tilt knock it down a ton or get a qualifier? Because the other aspects are so great, I'd ask for a qualifier grade if the tilt would otherwise kill the overall grade. What do you think?

Also, this is one of the nicest-looking PSA 5's I've ever seen. The corners aren't perfect, but they're the only issue I noticed. I submitted it several years ago and was hoping for a 7. Think I could bump it up to at least a 6? It doesn't exactly fit my 6+ set-build, but it's got such great eye appeal that I find it hard to part with.

The Mays could possibly bump to a 5.5, but probably best to save the money on the attempt. Just my .02 ....

The Koufax looks like a 5 or 6, based on the tilt, the back, and the top edge.

Both are extremely appealing cards, regardless.

I was going through my set pics and I noticed this...

It's clearly tilted, but it still got an straight 8. I don't see anything in the grading standards about tilt. I assume it just plays into the "centering" determination and by its nature makes it harder for the centering to fall within the top end guidelines.

That actually reminded me of another card I have...

It doesn't seem like PSA really pays attention to the tilt itself, just its impact on the centering. Does anyone else have any insight?

There is no tilt qualifier, and your card is centered fairly well. It would not receive an OC qualifier for the front, the back might be close. I'd guess a straight 6-7.

The Koufax looks trimmed on the top edge.

PSA has been really rough on soft corners. I've had a bunch of cards I rate ex-mt or better come back vg-ex to ex. I'd not resub the Mays except perhaps on a review. Definitely not crack out.

Then again, strange things can happen. I have a PSA 7 1954 Bowman Maglie that was in a 2 holder. I cracked it out and resubmitted.

PSA isn't generally rough on tilt. I've seen PSA 10's with tilt. Would agree it's judged in context of the overall centering in most cases.

I was surprised to read, when discussing the 53 Mays 10, that PSA allows for slight off centering on their graded 10 Gem Mints.

I decided not to regrade the Mays, but I'm extremely disappointed with the grade for the Koufax, which just popped.

26212243 EXCELLENT 5 1956 Topps 79 Sandy Koufax White Back Card

I don't get it.
