Bob jumped the gun starting the 1st August "Recent Pick-Ups" thread in July so I thought I would start a new thread that actually is the 1st day of August.

Buck arrived from the U.K. today as a "Re-Patriation". I am understandingly proud and pleased.

Edited to say he now resides in an SGC 30 holder. Looking for better but some spotting, light wrinkling and slight erasures down-graded this beauty.

Guess I'll post the cards here that I posted last night. Neither card has received the Dorskin/Crandall seal of approval.

And with this, I have 55% of the T206 set, graded 1-4 by PSA, SGC, GAI and BVG (just a couple by BVG):

it's a silver gelatin photograph of the 1908 giants- strange little piece though. it's been glued to a piece of thick paper and has very careful spanish and english writing on the back. the photo itself is pretty thick too

Cool item Jamie.
It does not look like this was the original print but a copy of the original photograph.
The lack of contrast in your image leads me to think this way.
Maybe David Rudd can post his point of view on this.

Neat item but the image must be a photo of a photo. It could still be a period photo, just not first generation.

Jamie,

Real or not it's still cool. Did it come from an album? Strange that it would have Spanglish on the back. They did travel to Cuba and other places back then right?

Very neat picture...

It should have been quite obvious what the spanish words translate to but for those who took french in high school like I did and had to look the spanish translation up...

Sentados = Seated

De Pie = Standing

Faltan = Missing (from picture)

it looks like it was cut from an album. the photo itself has some pretty strong mirroring- it doesn't look like any silver gelatin photo i have. i agree that it's probably not first generation- the focus and the way it's cropped is a little weird. does anyone have a copy of what the full original photo may have looked like? i couldn't find a thing to match it to

scott- thanks for the translation. i had stupidly assumed it was first row, second, etc..

This seems to be one of the toughest in the set, and this one happens to be the highest graded on the SGC pop report... so I had to 'buy-it-now' on eBay.

11 down just 5 more to go.

Nice pick up Joe D. The Boston Nationals took me the longest to pick up for my set. If you'll notice, the photographer has added a lot of bodies to heads and heads to bodies in the photo. Strange photo but difficult to find.

Little rough for my taste. Joe has assured me that if he deals the Matty, I'm first in line. Don't let him see the price for that bow-wow.

I just got an 1862 CDV of boxer John C. Heenan by a famous NYC photographer, Charles DeForest Fredericks. It is one of the nicest images I've ever seen from that era.

A complete, original bound, example of the 1888 Spalding's Baseball Guide. I'm surprised how thorough the guide covers the league with over 200 pages of material. Great coverage of the 1887 Detroit Wolverine Championship

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Congrats Al! This is a unique set. I only have one of these cards and it fulfills my needs. I can not imagine having them all, especially the high numbers with the captions! Whew. Great accomplishment, great collection addition.

Thanks, Gil. I had the card in VG-EX (still do), but this is one set where I've actually been consistently trying to upgrade. I've gotten a little nutty about these '38s - all sorts of info about them on my website, www.swingbattaswing.com. Feel free to take a look.

Sorry for the hijack. To stay on track, I also bought this card, from a board member, for my HOF set (I only have the thumbnail on the computer I'm using, but it's real):
