Default How are your "Goals" coming along so far

Hey guys so everyone here I remembered at the end of last year/beginning of this year all talked about their own goals. The halfway point has come and seeing how people are doing with their goals.

Myself, I set two goals this year which can be seen in my signature. The first I have to say I am doing very well at. Only 8 cards away from my half way point and still bumming that I had multiple chances to snag that "white whale" haha Gehrig #37. I came close but missed them near the end. Still got time though to fulfill them both.

Lets hear how everyone is doing so far.

Default Ahead of Schedule

My stated goal is below. I haven't yet crossed off any of my B List Old Judge players, but I've already knocked off two from the A List, so even if I strike out for the rest of the year, I would still consider myself performing better than expected!

These were my goals set in November last year and how I'm doing.

1) finish the e93 set - haven't picked up either, still need Plank and Cobb

2) pick up a red backed w554, didn't see a single one for sale in 2013 - found one for auction, but had to pass due to goal #3

3) add 12 more e92 Nadja (still need a few St. Louis cards that might make this possible) - picked up 15 including Young, Chase, Jennings, Bender, and a number of tough commons all of which have been non-St. Louis players.

4) possibly start another easier caramel or 30's set such as e96, diamond stars, etc - probably not going to happen this year

5) pick up an m110 - not going to happen this year

Default I get an F

No luck with my 1952 Topps Grey back Reiser (#1 by a wide mile goal).

#2 goal - finish the W572s still remains stuck at 14 cards.

So ... total strike out so far. Maybe I need to start using steroids.

Cheers,
Patrick

I've made virtually no progress on my goals. I'm working on building my savings up some more after another knee surgery.

I have made zero headway on my main goals this year.

no new millers

no e94 upgrades

no n43's added

Miniscule progress has been made for me:
-Hit the 100 mark on both M101-4 (11) and M101-5 (13)
-Hit the 50 mark on T209-II (this is predicated on cards becoming available) (27)
-Focus a little more on HOFers from difficult sets (Hasn't happened....yet)

But on the other side, my HOF autograph collection has made great strides so far this year and already exceeded my goals and expectations!

My goal of finding a D351 and D355 is still unfulfilled. But I did cross off a T5 from my "need" list.

My biggest of many goals was to control my card-buying addiction, and i have failed miserably at that!!!!! But i am not sure if thats bad or good.

Here were my posted goals:

1. Continue to sell off my modern collection (already sold off about half of it) and try real hard to stop buying that stuff - except for an occasional Pirate.
UPDATE - I'm not selling as much modern as I'd like, but I have not bought much either so that's good.

2. Double my T206 set (currently at 75) to 150. Including getting an AB back and either a Wajo Hands at Chest or Matty White Cap.
UPDATE - I am currently at 115 so I am on pace for that goal. I did pick up a few AB backs. I did not get a Wajo Hands at Chest or Matty White Cap yet, however I did get a Matty Dark Cap.

3. Triple my E121-80 set (just started and currently at 10) to 30 including getting at least 5 HOFers.
DONE - I am currently at 31 and got HOFers Alexander, Baker, Carey, Hooper, Maranville, and Rice.

4. Add at least 10 new/different Pirate Pre-War Types.
DONE - added this year D322, E90-2, E92 Dockman and Croft's Cocoa, E93, E98, E101, E253, M101-4, M101-5 Famous and Barr, N172, T204, and V61-1

5. Spend just the right amount of money on that stuff so that my wife does not file for divorce (I can get away with slightly more than she spends on shoes....that's our deal).
UPDATE - Well....I'm still married!

Oh yeah.....one more - attend the National in Cleveland and meet some of you guys.
UPDATE - Unfortunately I will not make it to The National this year.

The T206 end has been a disaster, but everything else has been much better than expected - some superb autographs and memorabilia that I didn't expect to be collecting or dealing in.

sounds like most guys haven't kept up with their goals. I know some are a lil more difficult to do. But to those guys who have made the attempts or completions congrats guys. Always nice to see when you set your mind to fulfill something that it gets done. I still got months to finish mine but I think I will be able to complete them both. Small goals next year will be a much bigger goals for myself. Already have them some what in my mind.

This has been the "best" year of collecting as far as goals are concerned in my life.

Completed my 8-card e107 project including a HOFer and OP while having 4 of the 8 cards at Vg or better.
Completed n28s with a beautiful Ex Comiskey
Acquired another t206 Cobb and am 1 short on that project.
Got to 182 of 183 on the CJ master pose set with the Matty on my radar.
I finally found a 1907 FP Burke Tigers PC unused...finally.
I have downsized my collection in terms of quantity selling most of my post war cards.

So I potentially could only be looking for t206 Cobb at the National?

Congrats on those that met their goals, you other guys are slackers, ha!

My focused changed so....I guess a failed but I don't feel like it.

This was my first year collecting and I got up to 70 T206's. I was just buying to buy, I then changed focus and sold most of my original 70 cards and consolidated them into HOF Portraits. My collection now stands at 17 and I miss the cards I sold but I love my HOFers. I will now collect HOF portraits and the additional cards of Cobb, Mathewson, Wojo, and Cy Young.

I would like to get a 1914 CJ HOFer as well by years end.

The main thing is this is always so much fun.

2014 Goals:
1. Mantle Master Set: add one more U.S. issued card (will finish out my set of nationally issued Mantle cards), add the final three postcards I need, and pick up at least one foreign issued card I am still looking for (preferably 1-2 of the Venezuelans that are still on my list.
-I finished all of the mainstream cards, picked up a handful of the rare regionals, and managed to get one foreign card (a Post Canadian instead of the Venezuelan I was chasing). Still looking for one of the three postcards but have since added a couple to the list.

2. Get married.
-The fiance is sleeping peacefully in my bed after an evening of wedding planning. I found the perfect balance of jewelry and baseball cards, or at least a good enough one to keep her around.

All and all, I think I am making some decent progress. There are a handful of other cards I'd love to pick up. But, I am slowly checking things off my list while adding money to the wedding fund, house fund, and retirement fund.

The first half of the year has come and went and I am pretty much on track:

1. Period Cy Young < $200
Got it - Dominoes Disc
2. 10 hits to my type collection
On target with five hits thus far
3. 10 hits to my player collections
Done
4. Add 15 34-36 Diamond Stars
Got four - all HOF'ers - Ott, Maranville, Manush, and Lopez
5. Take more trips to my existing binders and enjoy what I have.
This will get more attention in the second half.

Lets see:

Goal number one: spend less than I actually make (check)
Goal number two: come up with some goals (not yet)
Goal number three: collect whatever comes up that I like at the time. (check)

Two out of three, not bad.

Huge strides forward with the last E121-80 auctions on eBay. Now if USPS gets off their butt and gets them here instead of shipping them to New York and then Los Angeles and doesn't lose them those goals will be realized. USPS is a necessary evil but hopefully they will get here soon.

Default Goals - Could not be happier

My goals are going great so far!

Finished the Law school semester on Dean's list again (one more year to go) and top ten % in the class and got a job offer!! Woohoooo! Current Life Goals are progressing well

Collecting goals, doing great.

Highlights for the Matty Collection have been an E98 Orange, an E93, an E92 Dockman & Sons, and just got in the mail an E103 (Thanks once again Pete!)

Still wanting a nice T3 Matty!

Default 2014 Goals

>> add only two to five "signficant" HOF rookie cards - oops! I have added about 39 new rookie cards, 10 of which could be labeled as "significant"! I really need to get this addiction in check!

>> get to 60-75% complete for the Helmar Stamps set - trade/sell extras - currently at 54.4% completion, up from 49.4% at year-end. Still need to sell my extras though. Planning to consign a few of the HOFers to Love of the Game Auctions.

>> trim the fat of my collection (and belly) - epic fail, yet again!

Here are my set goals from last year compared to where I'm at currently:

T201: End of last year 38/50...currently 46/50...goal for this year is to finish the set, so I'm looking good so far.

T206: End of last year 160ish/520...currently 181/520...goal for this year is 200/520...so I like my odds!

'38 Goudey set: End of last year 18/48...currently 26/48...goal for this year was to get as many as I could, so no real goal, but I think I'm doing pretty well on this set so far.

Glad to hear everyone's updates on their current goals for this year...good luck to everyone on the back end of 2014!

Default Goals Are Not

that important to me these days.

I had written an eight paragraph response when I hit the wrong da@$ key and away it all went. To summarize what I wrote, I have installed a raised bed garden and five zone drip system, planted a garden with around 30 incredibly healthy edibles, built two workbenches in preparation of returning to my other passion- building bamboo fly rods. Somewhere in all of this I have upgraded around 30 cards in my Monster, and acquired five upgrades to the T201 set I hope to have completed one day with a weighted average over SGC 82. I know, a goal.. So what.

And then two weeks ago my niece's husband was murdered, kicked to death by five thugs in one of those senseless acts of violence you may hear about or think does not happen to anyone but...you fill in the blank. It does happen, it is senseless, there is no justice because nothing will bring Jesse back; nothing will repair the pain and loss. Don't get me started, my apologies.

Hope this note finds you all well and prospering, with growing collections and a sense of satisfaction that this hobby/passion/calling/addiction/ avocation can bring. Unh, anyone know where I can find a high-end Gibson/Leach in SGC80 or better?

Peace be with you all

Keith

Keith - that's awful. My condolences go out to you and your whole family. Definitely puts things into perspective, doesn't it?

You definitely need a Gibson/Leach now to take your mind off things. Sorry I don't have one for you. Take care.

I've blown away my Columbus OJ list. Every time I say I'm done for the year a new one falls into my lap. Recent addition includes an O'Connor Columbus from a fellow board member.

I started the year working on a '34 Goudey set, but quickly changed to 19th century after I picked up my first OJ. This year has been a buying year with little to no actual goals. Not a good thing with the price of OJs. Now that I know the market and some of the OJ collectors I plan to set actual goals for the last half of the year. National will be the first time I start working on them.

I'm also working of Series 4 & 6 T210s. They are hard to find so the buying is staying a little more practical.

This year has been a blast so far, now if I could only keep my wife and my website updated for everyone to enjoy our collection.

I no longer try to keep my wife updated due to the cost of plastic surgery.

As for my own goal of survival, I'm half way. I guess that means in 6 months I will no longer be half dead.

My goals are fairly static from year to year...knock 5 lines off the phillies list and acquire t205s...

This year to date, I have added 137 t205s (down a bit from last year) and knocked 3 lines off the phillies list (but it is getting really really tough now).

Blown my simple 2014 goal away by far.
(1) Done ::::: Start a n172 Omaha subset - (((got 2)))

(2) Done ::::: 2 of the top 10 t205s - (((got a Matty and a Johnson, plus 3 more)))
Also picked up a (((T205 printing error)))
(3) Done ::::: 1 HOF- Cubs subset - (((got a Tinker t206 knees, e90-1, 102))) & (((Chance T207, e90-1))))

So goal was to add total only 4 cards to my collection - I'm up to 13.

Very mixed. My goals were:
1) finish the E94 master set of all colors of all players. I did manage to pick up 3 of my final 10 in the past year but got sniped on a red Bates on ebay which was a real downer. E94s are tough to find in any color, any player but I see why my final 7 are my final 7: they're next to impossible! It's not a question of money and being outbid, they just don't appear. Plus one of my 7 is the violet Murray and I know a zillion guys after that one because of violetmania.
2) Make a huge dent in the T210 set. I managed to almost complete series 1,2,3 and 5 and am close on 8 but 4,6 and 7 remain problems as there is so much competition for those 3 series. I'll keep plugging along.
3) Finish the George Miller set. Picked up some but still need a handful.
4) Put together the sets from my youth- 1958-1962 Topps. I put together the 58, 60 and 61 sets and bought a complete 59 set at auction and upgraded it. Ready to start the 62 now, so this was close to being completed.
5) Pick up some Black Swamp Finds to add to my E98s. Done.
6) Upgrade my 4 Obak sets- done.
7) Stay away from OJs, Cracker Jacks and Goudeys because I am a set guy and completing the first is impossible, the second too difficult and the third I just don't want to.

Mike aka Freakhappy- Nice to see the Goudey set moving along. I haven't really been moving on that set lately. Maybe because you have been snagging them all up haha. But good job man on the others.

keith aka drmondobueno's- Sorry to hear bout your loss. But great to hear that the collection is doing well. I will keep an eye out for that Gibson/Leach for ya though never know. I like to keep a list of stuff I know people are looking for. Never know when I may see something and say i think so and so was looking for that. Then i will pick it up.

steve aka shernan30- I have seen the progress on the OJ's and gotta say it sure has been a buying year for ya. If you ever want to unload some of those 34 Goudeys to get some extra $$$ to buy lmk haha.

josh aka wite3- I love that T205 set wish I never sold my partial set years back oh well. Congrats on your progress and hope you can catch some of those Phillies .

John aka nebboy- Next year you will have to def put bigger goals haha. But congrats on your pick ups. Some pricey ones for sure.

tbob- Been busy and buying a ton. Congrats on the sets. Can't wait to see what comes in the future.

I'm doing well in 2014. I came out strong and am coasting in to the end of the year. I still need to pick-up roughly 5 T206, 4 33 Goudeys, and some upgrades as they become available. I've added a few cards I've been after for awhile including my first Cy Young T206, some low number Goudeys, and have added a few N300s.

My biggest pick-up is coming in December as my wife and I are expecting our 3rd.

Desiderata

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.
