Default Inside Fenway Park: An Icon on TV

Show starts in about 5 minutes.

on Channel 11 - WTTW - in Chicago

The centennial of the oldest and smallest MLB ballpark in the U.S. is celebrated. Highlights of park uses include soldier masses during WW1, a 1918 Irish Republican rally, FDR's last campaign speech, and a variety of concerts.

They're spending more time on hot dog vendors and maintenance men, than on the history of Fenway, like I surely would prefer. But I will keep watching of course....

After working 7 years in the Stadium Operations department with the CUbs I have to tell you I totally enjoyed this documentary because there are many parallels between Fenway and Wrigley. This brought back so many memories of my time at Wrigley and I hope they do one of these for the Friendly Confines in the future. I kept looking at my wife and making comments about some of the same things I saw on TV and experienced myself and she just looked at me like she could care less!!

I did have to laugh about the guy that had keys to everything in the park because I had those keys to Wrigley (worked as security some times) and I can guaranty you I explored every inch of that place when there was nobody else around. Its a magical/yet scary place but I will always be able to say I hit a ball into the bleachers, I slid into home plate and I did my homework while in college, sitting on the centerfireld grass on a warm sunny Sunday when the team was out of town!

Like I said, this documentary brought back many great memories. Thank you for alerting us to the fact it was being shown or I would have never known about it.

I watched it on PBS in CT last night. First of all, I am a die hard Yankee fan. I absolutely loved it!!! Behind the scences on all aspects. What a cool (but trainwreck) place Fenway is. I even got a glimpse of a long time friend who went to work for the Sox out of college 20+ years ago. She works for customer relations and handles charity and player appearances. Very cool. Two thing that I thought were really cool: the fish on the infield when the rains caused the Charles river to backwash into Fenway, and of course the manual scorekeeper who has been there (don't remember if it was 10 or 20 years) that is a Yankee fan. Oh, and how about the morse code for the initials for Yawkey and his wife, very cool stuff!!!! Bring on some baseball (and Fenway franks)!!!!

Tim
