I was watching the movie Memphis Belle the other night and one of the crew members had a small stack of 1939/40 Playballs. Can you think of any other movies that featured Pre-War cards.

There was a long-running sitcom recently that featured wall displays of prewar, but the name eludes me.

My nephews were watching one of the Stuart Little movies one time and I saw a 1954 Bowman Willie Mays in Stuart's "home."

Not a card...but one of the most important roles played by baseball memorabilia in a movie
is the little toy baseball skill game played by the detective (Dana Andrews) in "Laura"

The Goonies (1985) the dead guy Chester Copperpot had a 1933 Goudey of Lou Gering and The Sandlot is my son's favorite had a few vintage items in the old guys house - Babe Ruth Ball.

There was a movie about Honus Wagner and the T206 card as well - few years back on TNT I think?

Not quite baseball cards, but in the wonderful 1947 film "Life with Father", starring William Powell and a teenage Elizabeth Taylor, and set in 1880's New York, Powell's two young sons are reading the newspaper and one blurts out "the Giants won and Ewing hit a home run." Find another movie that mentions Buck Ewing by name.

As Goonies continues to be one of my favorite movies, I want to point out that the card featured in it is actually the 1976 Topps all-time all star card although the movies purports it to be from the 1930's.

In various Seinfeld episodes I think I've seen both framed 1934 Goudey reprints as well as N162 reprints, but they are shot from far away so I can't be certain. But the T205's are definite.

In the movie "Needful Things" the young boy Brian trades services with the Devil for a signed 1956 Mickey Mantle, in the book it was a Sandy Koufax.

In the 1999 dud movie "Blast from the Past" starring Brendan Fraser I believe he produces a stack of 1933 and 1934 Goudey which included a Hornsby if memory serves me correctly. I also seem to recall in the early 1980s the television show "Hart to Hart" had a whole episode about baseball cards.

Rocky, the deformed teenager in the movie "Mask" (Eric Stoltz, Cher...) had some '55 Topps Dodgers in holders pinned to the wall of his room.

Of course, Hoffman's "Rainman" had it's poignant card scene...

Not so poignant was the early 80s "Silver Spoons" episode where John Houseman and Rick Schroeder were going to corner the Tommy Lasorda rookie card market (which seemed to all look like the backside of 1983 Topps if memory serves...) and spread rumors about his pending election to the Hall of Fame.

If were going to include 50's & 60's cards. I remember a Star Trek Episode or Movie where a villian had a bunch of ancient artifacts and one of them was a 1962 Maris or a Maris rookie, I can remember. Maybe theres a Trekkie on the board that remembers.

To elaborate on Dan Bretta's post......a young Lou Gehrig in the beginning of The Pride of the Yankees was trading T206 Matty's,
Wagner, etc. for a chance to play hardball with the big guys.

Also on TV, some years back, Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers (Hart to Hart) were chasing after a BB card thief. It involved
a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and therewas a BB card flipping contest in it.

TED Z

Thanks to Mark Macrae for clarifying my story on the BB card details of this Hart to Hart drama.

OK, yes.....I'm a Trekkie!!!

That was the episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation titled "The Most Toys". An alien "collector" kidnapped Data to add to his collection. One of the items in his collection was a 1962 Topps Roger Maris that supposedly still had the gum smell eminating from it.

The cards young Lou is trading is def. NOT t206's. If you look real close they appear to be M's. He says he has players that are not in that set but that is def what they are. Also, Lous woulda been about 13 in that scene so there ya go.
Also, In "a christmas story" you can see a t206 and a 1940 playball tacked to ralphies bedpost.
ALSO,
there is an 80's twilight zone episode about a guy obsessed with old baseball cards. His ex wife burns them all and he kills her I think? Anways, the payoff, he ends up going back in time and being a ball player on one of the cards. Clearly shows Goudeys for sure.

In the Natural, there is a Roy Hobbs card that is modelled upon the 1941 Playball set.

Don't forget "League of Our Own" when Tom Hanks was asked to sign the baseball card that I remember looking like the 1934 Goudey Jimmy Foxx (although he was Jimmy Dugan in the movie?).

Dead hubby (vigo mortgenson) leaves clues written on baseball cards (gasp!) from the 60s that leads wife (andy mcdowell) on a trail around the planet. There's one scene (that I instintively winced at while watching) where, after figuring out the clue on the card, she rips it up and throws it in the trash.

Hate to argue with you regarding the young Lou Gehrig scene, but you have to go with his words.......he refers to the cards
he is trading to play BB as...."white border Tobacco cards". So, forget what they looked like.

And, his age in that scene is really uncertain. He could have been 10 years old or 14. In any event, T206's just didn't vanish
by circa 1915. These cards were available for several years beyond when they were issued (1909-1911).

But he also has a Babe Ruth to trade in the scene, and it is mentioned that Babe is a rookie or a young player.

The Babe Ruth card would have to be an M101-type.

But, I distinctly recall that Lou said he had Matty cards. Mathewson is not in the M101-4 (or -5) sets.
He had to be talking Tobacco cards....check-it out.

I know, but the cards he shows are like m101-4's. It is possible he has a combination, or the likely explanation is that the movie's creators had no idea what they were doing.

I personally like when Lou enters the Yankees locker room for the first time is in awe of the lockers of murderer's row Ruth, Meusal, Dugan and...Lazzeri?

its def NOT t206's cause you can actualyl see the cards if you look real close. They are def. m's 100% no doubt about it. He mentions random players because that is in the scipt and has no connection to the cards that are barely shown (I actualyl paused it and stuck my head up to the tv to determine they were m's that the actor is actually holding. What they have on film and what they wrote in the script are two different things all together.

" The Sandlot"
Tons of cards, balls, Pennants and statues in the movie including an Aaron rookie. In fact in the dream sequence, "the babe" ask the kid if he can have the Aaron card for some reason. Be well Brian

PS I also like the 62 topps Brock thumb tacked to the tree house wall...

I caught five minutes of a former TGIF tv show called Family Matters with the one and only, Steve Erkel.

Well Steve managed to get a R & B pop singer dude to sing several songs to Laura Winslow in exchange for a mint condition Mickey Mantle rookie. Steve had the card in a 1/2" lucite screw down and they actually showed the card.

My input for the day.

Thanks for clarifying this controversy. I knew Lou was referring to them as Tobacco cards.
I didn't recall seeing the cards, but I was certain about his words....which included Matty
and Wagner. And, you don't forget the name of Wagner when associated with Tobacco cards.

And, I am certain when I say Matty was not in the M101-4 (or -5) sets.
