The basic set is just one copy of each card, the master set has all of the known errors and variations.

Worked with Dacubsfan (Ed) again on #s 40-80. He sent some beauties and I am grateful to have them. That Killebrew is sharp. I should figure out the percentage of cards I still need. I think I'm running at 50/60% of the low and mid numbered cards. I have not started on Hi #s. But I have Mantle #300, and Mantle #475....although I have been trying to use those as trade bait this week.

And my LCS is having a black Friday sale on singles, and he has the Ron Santo RC and Billy Williams RC sitting on his shelf. If he has nothing better to draw my attention with, I'm thinking of picking both of those up at a sale price.

Working on a mid-grade 1960s set, need a lot of midrange stars and high numbers. Must be a lot of folks working this set because my wants are more expensive than I thought they would be.

On a side note, I find it a lot less stressful doing a set in this grade because not annoyed by having a tiny blemish eliminate the card from the set.

Wait till you graduate to collecting beaters. All the stress is gone and the people are WAY more fun to interact with because of the super low value of the cards.

My mid grade 1968 Topps football is coming along. Six more cards and the set will be complete. It's looking pretty nice in that binder.
I still need 34, 77, 126, 157, 210, 212.

Have decided to chase the 1961 Fleer set (don't laugh!). Just hit a milestone of 100/154.

I know this is an old post, but I love this sentiment and wish I could get there. If I could, it might revive my ability/willingness to be a set builder again.

Default Set complete

My 1968 Topps football set is complete. The set looks nice in the 9 card pages. It was a quick and easy set to finish with the cards that I had from my childhood.
Now on to my next set. The 1961 Topps. I have a 275 card head start with a fair amount of the star cards, but only a few of the high numbers. Going for a nice mid grade set.

My first post on the set builders thread. I am currently working on 66,67,68,69,64 stand ups and 69 Supers.

I have all the 69 Supers just need to upgrade a handful of cards mostly commons. Want them in PSA 8 or higher

For the 64 stand ups I am trying to finish a third set ... need some stars and a couple SPs Looking for vg ex

The 66 set is about 85 per event done.

The 67 set is getting there too. 80 percent done. Need high numbers and stars
I am really looking for nice cards for 67!

For 68 I need a spectacular Bench, Ryan and Lolich to put together a NrMt raw set !! It’s Beautiful

For 69 I need a ex Jackson to finish and to upgrade my vg Ryan to Ex
Thanks Scott

I know it's a bb forum, but ill chime in that i need 1 1964 topps hockey psa graded card #14 henry. Never seems to be offered (dean's has one but i'm not paying $99 for a psa4 o/c). On the baseball front I put together a psa graded set of 66 highs and the most troublesome card was Earl Wilson #575 a common. Took me over 6 months to find it.

Default 1953 Bowman Set

In December of last year, I purchased two 1953 Bowman commons in fair condition for 50 cents each. It was a nostalgia purchase, I had a handful as a much younger collector in the 1970s. My first one was Al Corwin in the pitching pose and later I bought the Mantle, Berra, Hodges, Campanella, Wynn and Feller, the Mantle in vg condition with no creases cost me $20! I sold them in 1980 to go to a debate camp in Arizona.

As I write this, I am down to 19 cards left to complete the set. My cards are mostly in vg-ex condition with a few slightly better and a few "placeholders" until something else better comes along. Almost everything has come from eBay purchases. Something tells me I needed to have started a bit earlier as prices have shot up since the middle of March.

The bigger cards I need are the Berra, Reese, Martin and Feller. I also need the Rizzuto, Fox and Boudreau. I'm missing eight common high numbers and four non-star commons. I just picked up a PSA Mantle over the weekend, it should arrive tomorrow. I'll display a little of my acquisitions and if anyone who reads this has any 53 Bowman color singles to sell, please contact me.

Default 1949 Bowman

I recently got a 1949 Bowman Jackie Robinson light back variation so now I just need a Yogi Berra dark back to finish my 1949 Bowman master set. Set is mostly VG so I'm looking for a Berra in VG or so condition to finish it up.

Finished my low-grade 1961-62 Fleer set with this COMC Ted Williams as a birthday present to myself this month. I suspect it'll be awhile before COMC's shipping's back to normal, so letting it rest in inventory for now and will unite the Splinter with the rest of his set later this year.

Down to about 30 cards left on the 1964 set. Mostly cards above 400 left which more or less means highs and mid-highs. But when I finish this 64 set I'll be done w the Topps 60's base sets. Thank goodness there are no parallel sets, purple edition, 1 day editions etc....

Need just four more cards for my basic 1952 Topps 1-310 run after overpaying for #2 Runnels last night. But, hey, tired of waiting and one more off the list! Like my signature says, I now only need McCosky, Carrasquel, Brissie and Mays.

I'm mainly a set builder and have finished the Topps sets from 1956 and 1971 through 1979. I'm currently working on (with various levels of seriousness) 1955, 1960, 1965, 1968, and 1970 but am only close to completion on the last two.

I am only 3 away from completion on 1970, but haven't been to a show in a while to try and knock them off. In the past, I had bought a lot through Greg Morris on eBay, but his sale prices have gotten way too rich for my blood. As an (extreme) example, I need card 550 (Frank Howard.) Beckett puts it's book value at $6. Based on my personal bidding rules of thumb, I'd bid up to $2.50 for that card in EX+ or better condition. I might go as high as $3 given that it is one of the last few I need. I was watching an GM auction for this card earlier this week. It ended up selling for $48.89. The card was NM/MT, but it wasn't perfectly centered. It just makes no sense to me.

I'm only 6 cards away from finishing 1968, but one of them is the Nolan Ryan rookie card which has also gotten pretty pricey. I may consider that set complete when I have everything but that card and just wait for this bubble to burst before I go after that one.

Default 1949 Bowman and 1956 Topps master sets

I finally found a 1949 Bowman Berra dark back to complete my 1949 Bowman master set. Also, I am waiting to receive the last few cards in the mail to finish my 1956 Topps master set.

You guys all rock! I broke up the 1953 and 1954 Topps sets I built a few years ago. I have never been able to get back in the set building groove. I have too much of a wandering eye, I'm afraid, and I'm not trying to be funny by saying that. The idea of picking a set and building it is still appealing to me at times. I just can't seem to make it happen. Kudos to all of you. You guys are the hubby's backbone!

Where are you guys buying your commons these days? You buying lots, or are you buying them a card or so at a time? More costly this way but allows for more control over each card. Battersbox has a good selection, but it seems like it could get pricey over time. Just curious.

On my 53 Bowman I picked up several low to mid-grade lots. I pulled the cards I needed and sold others. As I upgrade I have more singles to trade/sell. Right now I have about 47 extras, mostly in vg to vg/ex condition that I may trade towards a 1971 Topps Baseball set in vg condition. It can get pricy, but you have options with the extra cards you cannot use.

I'm not one to usually collect sets because I usually just pick up singles that I want but I recently finished the 1969 Topps Pilots team set and have moved on to doing my first ever complete set in the 1950 Bowman. I've got 75 out of the 252 cards with a few of the HOFers already in Frisch, Mize, Appling, Slaughter and Kell. I've got the Newcomb rookie as well. I've got my eye on 5 or 6 more on ebay right now that i'm thinking of picking up soon.

I reached 254/274 on my signed 1953 Topps project last month, with two more I need in auctions ending soon. Technically there’s a third as well, but it’s part of a large lot of unrelated stuff and I can’t bring myself to go after all that for one card. I’m also starting signed Bowman Red Sox sets from the early 1950s. I’ve done some reading about those teams lately that’s given me a soft spot for them, and gotten good deals on some cards with vintage signatures.

Finished my 54T set today. Well, kinda'. I opted to get 55T Banks & Kaline (2nd year cards) & I already had a 56T Aaron, to fill their slots in the 54T binder. I've never done this before. But there are some sets I just can't afford the HOF RC's. And the 2nd year cards are often WAY less expensive. Anyway, anyone else ever do this? I know some people won't consider the set done, but for me, I think it is :-)

After breaking up a '53 Topps set a couple of years ago, I am happy to report that the band is back together again, and I couldn't be happier! Next up is to rebuild '54 Topps.

Since finishing my Topps run, I have been getting more into pre war. Have recently finished 33 Goudey and working on 34 Goudey. Also have started on T201, BatterUp, Diamond Stars and 40 Play Ball. Also still need a little bit to finish up my Bowman run; about thirty in 50 Bowman, 68 in 49 Bowman and 28 in 53 Bowman black and white.

Default Set Collectors - Report in your progress!

Continuing to upgrade the 53 Bowman color set to a mostly excellent condition set, some of the stars are vg/ex and will have to remain that way. I am trying to purchase/trade cards from non-eBay sources, but haven't had much luck.

#280 Cloyd Boyd completes my 1952 Topps low numbers 1-310.

No interest on chasing the high's. Blasphemy, I know. I'm not spending $1000 on Bartirome, nor $100+ on the rest of the commons.

Keep you sanity and stay away from them.

It's too late for many of us, but you can still save yourself

I never really considered taking this approach, but I see more and more of you guys mentioning this. It makes me think about doing it at some point, maybe doing the black and red backs to make me feel good about myself . I truly enjoy the set. Congrats on the accomplishment!!

Congrats! I still need 3 in Pafko, Berra and Martin to finish my low number run, and I plan on getting back at it soon.
As far as the high's go, that will most likely only happen when, and if, I come across some good deals. I still need 37-38 but with highs like Mathews, Campanella and Wilhelm among them, I know deals will only happen if I get very very lucky.

Nice to see the approvals. Was thinking I might get shamed.

After finishing the 67 set and those high numbers (made me dislike the set), well a man has to know his limitations.

Fred, I'm jealous. That's a nice looking Mays for the grade.

I'm working on the '55 Topps now. 26.70% Complete (55/206) including Aaron, Robinson and Snider.
