Default 2008 Wilmington, MA GBSCC / Shriner's show?

Posted By: Jason Carota

Made a quick visit to the Greater Boston Sports Collectors Club site earlier to check on news of an '08 Shriner's show. Unfortunately, there was only a "thank you" type page for the '07 show. Is there going to be one this year?

The GBSCC's website isn't updated often. When in doubt I resort to dealer's show calendars. 707's has it listed from October 31 to November 2 which would match prior years' events...

I would love to attend and meet some of you from the board. I have not attended this show in the past. What can expect to see? I live in northern CT, so it should not be a bad ride at all.

Besides the National each year, this is a show I love to attend but will not be able to make this year. Made it in 07 but living in MN keeps me from attending each year. Great show. Will probably make 09 and will look forward to maybe meeting some board members at that time.

I guess I must be in the minority but I attended last year's show for the first time and found nothing worthwhile in vintage cards and will not make the four hour drive again this year.

I'll most likely be there; I usually go on the Saturday of the show. It'll be good to meet up with you again...

I agree with the statement that the quantity of vintage material was much less last year. I think the advent of Ebay has hurt the volume of items for sale at the Shriners, but it's still a must-do on my list. Then again, I only live 20 minutes away, and probably agree it's not worth a 4 hour drive.

Didn't get to the show last year only because my wife was in the hospital (how rude of her, I know...). This show will stir up a lot of memories for me as I went to it a couple of years ago with my 43 year old brother in law who I just lost to cancer.

Years before, picked up some awesome stuff from a friend of mine who sets up there. Maybe because I'm not a card collector, but it seems that there are tons of pre-war cards there so I don't get the remark about the cards. Not many dealers in pre-war memorabilia, but just enough for me to wish I had more $$$. It's a huge show that's a lot of fun. I can't imagine a better regional show. Really quality dealers.

If folks want to meet up, that could be fun. I plan on being there on the Saturday. Jimmy, what booth are you in? Will say hello.

Of course, if you collect pre-war Sox, the show absolutely sucks and is not worth attending

Greg

Been to the Shriners for the past 4 years now. Always have a good time seeing prewar that I`d never have a chance too. Will be returning again this year!

Rawn,

You have never been to the Shriner's show? It's been going on for decades. Definitely worth the drive for someone in your vicinity. With many major dealers coming in from all corners of the country, it's as close to a toned-down version of the National as you can get. If you haven't already, introduce yourself to the Hall family from Hall's Nostalgia while at the show. They have spent the last three or four decades specializing in obscure Red Sox cards and memorabilia, and I bet they can help you in your Carrigan quest. They're nice guys.

I've only been into this early vintage stuff for less than a year. I'll make my rounds and try to meet all that I can. I've found everyone here to be most helpful and I'm sure that it will continue.

The Hall family always has the first table on your right as you walk into the main arena for the show, so they will be easy to spot. As Jodi said, they should be a great resource for you.

It's on the calender and money is being set aside. Jodi, I think it has been classified as an addiction now rather than a quest. The only therapy that I can find so far is to throw more money at it.

I have signed up to do this show. Not only is this my first time at this show, it will be my first time in Boston or even the state. I will not have as much inventory with me as I do for the National, I drive to the National and I will fly in for this show.

Does anyone know Mike Babin or Babbin? He is from Montreal Canada but was at this show for years helping 1 of the dealers out (I think it was the dealer who was always setting up against the back wall selling supplies). I have been trying to contact him for some time now with no luck. He also set up at many of the national conventions in the 90's. If anyone knows how I can reach him, please email tsalems1@yahoo.com

I'm really looking forward to this show, never attended before. Is it all high end and/or modern stuff or can I expect to find some affordable pre-war beaters (specifically T205s and T3s)? If anyone is interested in meeting there, I'm not sure which day I'm going but I live about a half hour away. I don't have anyone to talk pre-war baseball with and have gained a vast amount of knowledge just lurking this board now and then for the past few months. Also, I saw that PSA and JSA will have booths set up there - is it possible to submit on-site? Do they authenticate on site or take the submission and send it back? I might have something for them that I would rather not risk in the mail.

There is always a wide variety at the GBSCC show: 19th century baseball cards (much of which is at Terry Knouse's table) right on through 21st century shiny stuff. Other sports are also pretty well represented. I've been going to this show for +/- 20 years and always find something. For those of us in New England it's really the only show worth going to.

I think they have had on-site grading there in the past but can't swear to it as I don't much care for slabbing.

In recent years, PSA has offered on-site grading. SGC is there as well, offering drop-off service only (no on-site grading).

I'll be there all day on Saturday, Nov. 1 before heading into the Bruins game that night @ 7:00pm.

I'll meet anyone who plans to attend at the tables near where you buy the food at 1:00pm. Does anyone know the show hours?

Thanks,
Scott (ubiqty)

Friday 12-7, Saturday 9-5, Sunday 10-4

Attached is the link to the flyer - tons of autograph guests...

Is it just me, or are some of these autograph prices getting higher and higher each year? Gordie Howe never charged $99 before!

Scott,

I seem to recall Howe was charging $119 for flats at the National, but I could be wrong.

I see Gwynn is charging $99 for flats, but only $90 for cards. I understand that meeting your favorite player is an exciting experience, but these prices are ridiculous, especially when you consider that these items, in many instances, tend to retail for less than what the players' fees have become. You could likely buy a signed Gwynn RC on eBay for $50, perhaps less.

Hi-
I plan on arriving Saturday morning and staying through the early afternoon. How about we try for a meet up at 1:00 (I think that time was suggested by an earlier poster) at the snack area? This way we can compare notes and acquisitions from the morning. Just for fun, I was debating wearing a name tag with Net54 on it, to see how many folks stop me and make comments about it (I am very curious to see how well known this forum is, especially at this particular show). This might be a good way to identify fellow Net54ers. I look forward to seeing folks from this forum at the show!

I too plan on being there on Saturday to get a couple of items signed. I'm driving down from Maine and will head back in the afternoon. After reading the post about this show, I can't wait! The closest I've ever been to a "big" show was this years Fanfest in NYC. And I agree with the post about auto pricing. The pricing is out of control, but as long as fools like me keep paying it, they will keep charging the high prices.

Someone asked about grading on site. I asked at the PSA board about grading and they are only accepting submissions, no on site grading. And I also found out they will reholder a card for you without being a member of PSA Collectors Club. Just pay the $5 reholder fee and return shipping. I plan on having my Ted Williams rookie reholdered.
