Default Need help again identifying photo

Since you guys did such a great job last time, I have another one for you.

This photo was taken at an All-Star game. I am trying to identify the players and the year the game was played. The first player looks a little like Rizutto.

Thanks!

Ernie Lombardi, second from left.

Lombardi was an all-star with Cincinnati, in 1938, 39 and '40. So, it has to be one of those years.

Not Rizzuto. Maybe Crosetti?

Are you sure it wasn't taken during the 1939 World Series (Reds v. Yanks)?

edited to add: That could make the Red with the first baseman's glove Frank McCormick. I lack photo ID skills, but to my admittedly untrained eye it looks like him.

I believe the photo is from 1939 (note arm patches) and it is McCormick

Since Lombardi played with the Reds during that time period. This narrows it down to 1936, 1937,1938,1939,1940.

They are wearing patches on their left arm that looks like All Star patches.

Todd, you are right. The bands say 1939. I agree with you that the third player is Frank McCormick.

Does the 4th player looks like Dickey?

All Star Game was held at Yankee Stadium in 1939 so maybe ASG, maybe WS. Patches are probably Centennial patches. Crosetti, Lombardi, McCormick (cf. his 1939 Playball at vcp.com), working on #4.

If you believe it's from an all-star game, then it couldn't have been '36 or '37, as Lombardi was not an all-star in those years.

OK, Lombardi WAS an all-star, in those years. Just didn't play. Sorry.

It was 1939.

The other Yankees that played besides Crosetti were:

Dickey
Gordon
Murphy
Rolfe
Ruffing
Selkirk

Definitely not the following:

DiMaggio
Gehrig
Gomez

Thanks for all your help.

I knew I came to the right place. It took less than 15 minutes to solve the mystery.

Hi David -

Actually 1939 is way too modern for me. I do know those 1839-1939 patches were to commemorate the supposed 100 year centennial of baseball.

Was just yanking your chain a bit. Actually I do appreciate the objective approach you bring to identifying old ballplayers. I took two or three air photo courses myself in conjunction with my Surveying Engineering degree many moons ago. Scale, photo tilt etc and the quantifying thereof are not just abstractions from left field to me, and I am definitely not one of your naysayers. Even so, I based my id'ing of the Yanks and Reds on quick glances at baseball cards, i.e., the subjective approach, and thereby reserve the right to be wrong.

Yes - the subject is photogrammetry. The "Manual of Photogrmmetry" can be found in used condition online for a reasonable price. Not much there directly for facial ident. - but a lot of interesting stuff.
