The other one was really getting long so I thought I'd start a final one for 2008.
Thanks to Anthony for allowing me to have the D311 Murray return and to Tony for selling me the D311 Sutor. These are really beautiful cards and very underappreciated.

I actually got this a little bit ago, but thought
I'd throw it in as my last pickup of 2008.

2008 was a banner year for the Group on E Bay

We won 37,7% of the items we bid on and adding
23 high grade cards to America's Toughest Want List

The final victory was

1911 Rochester Baking D359 - Bris Lord, Phil AL - PSA 5
which we snared with 11 seconds to go in the auction.

We're looking forward to taking advantage of market conditions
in 2009 and adding to our collection

Bruce- I just looked up the D359 Lord and was shocked to see a PSA 5 selling for $747. That is 50-60% what it was worth a year ago. That is truly a big fall.

Per Ebay the winning bid on that D359 was placed on 12/24:
Item number:110327647215
1911 Rochester Baking D359 - Bris Lord, Phil AL - PSA 5
Winning bid: US $747.87
Bidders:12
Bids:19
Time Ended:Dec-27-08 09:06:00 PST
i***m( 151) US $747.87 Dec-24-08 22:58:59 PST

Sounds to me more like you placed a bid on Christmas Eve and let it ride for nearly three days. You can use a snipe program, BTW, to place bids without having to sit at the computer in real time. It can really free up time to spend with family and friends.

"We had some computer problems as we were frozen out (both evenings)
during the last minute and half of bidding."

Must have been those computer problems that kept "we" from winning all of those underpriced Mastro lots Adam that messed up the snipe.....

Guys,

Perhaps in 2009 you will learn that facts often do little but muck up what some perceive to be a good story.

To paraphrase George Costanza: "It's not a lie if you believe it."

Now if you'll excuse me, Morgan Fairchild is calling from the next room.

I don't usually post my cards before they arrive. But I'm pretty excited about this one and wanted to get it in under the 2008 wire. I just won it a few minutes ago.

Been a while since I posted anything new to me in the Pickup Threads... but since I've finally gotten a card I've been after for about 20 years, it seemed time. And thank you to a board member for parting with it.

But first before the scan, Marty, a nice W514, if you've not read the Walter Johnson book written by his grandson, you must read it. Scott is mentioned in there, a key player. Justin, if that slightly peeled Cobb is an E102, I love it! Brian, EVERY Mike Gonzalez card is golden, you know of his 4 word telegram to Branch Rickey describing a prospect?? Mr. Rickey appreciated frugality.

I wish everyone well in their 2009 collecting pursuits.

Not long ago I finally got a 1934 4 in 1 Exhibit that has Len Koenecke on it. He had such an interesting, and short, baseball career. Difficult to get him on a card.

Now, my new card. One really difficult T3 Turkey Red, finally nabbed.

20 years, the delays make acquisition all the better!

Gee, that thing looks, dare I say, GRADED?!?!?! wink.gif

Glad you found something that's been long on your list. Those sorts of pickups are bittersweet, no matter what kind of material you collect. The moose is stuffed and mounted above your fireplace, but the hunt is forever over. Sure, you may find an upgrade (likely far too soon, as Father Time has a perverse sense of humor), but nothing could ever possibly recapture that first glorious feeling of "I've GOT it!"!

P.S. In writing the above, I think I have finally come to understand the angler's love of fishing! Here's to you, Izaak Walton.

Ebay hooked me up with a $25 gift card and a 10% discount on one purchase expiring last night, so I took advantage and grabbed a PSA 3 Black Matty Sweet Cap 350-460 overstrike 42,4. With the discount and the thank you token for last years sale the price was OK. It was pretty much the only thing thing that fit into the collection closing last night. 19 HOFer and interesting players (Chase, Merkle and Shag) with different backs down.

Happy New Year to all,
Bob

Joe,that card is incredible. To see the Wagner T206 image anywhere else is great but to see it in that size and condition -- off the charts.

There's still a couple of hours of daylight left here in Honolulu and I am hoping against hope the FedEx guy will drive up with my Memory Lane CJ Johnson but that probably ain't happening.

These are Exhibit replica cards done up by Mike Wheat. I realize that they are not every collector's cup of tea but I like 'em fine.

As usual there is an interesting variety of cards and some outright great ones posted in the show'n'tell thread. Joe D.'s Fan Craze Wagner has to take the prize. An iconic beauty! Hope I look half-as-good when I'm 103. Peter U., great Yankee Stadium postcard. I have the colored linen version but like yours better. I saw that same view more times than I can recollect when I was young (before they constructed those god-awful spiral entryways) and it really gets the great smallkid-time memories going.

Happy New Year to all of you, my card collecting friends.
