Default I went to see the Dropkick Murphys last night

Don't worry, this is baseball related.

They played a new song called Jimmy Collins' Wake. Yeah, that Jimmy Collins.

Quote:
We've gathered here to bid adieu
Us Boston boys, alas are few
Some from crosstown some from the coast
To give our skipper one last toast
We'll pour the good stuff round his casket
Drop some coin into the basket
Bow our heads and praise the Lord
Then rouse ourselves and strike a chord...

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
That brought victory to our ground

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
While turning baseball upside down

We hit 'em hard, we hit 'em clean
The pitching of Big Bill Dinneen
Some legged a bunt, some hit them out
Remember old Buck Freeman's clouts
We'll sing of Candy, Cy and Freddy
Patsy Dougherty, Broadway Hobe,
Chick, and Jack O'Brein
Honus Wagner sat there cryin'

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
That brought victory to our ground

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
While turning baseball upside down

Our days with you indeed were great
and now that you have crossed the plate
and scored that final run of life
We'll hug your kids and kiss your wife
and tell of how you played the game
and led us all to wealth and fame
We'll lift our heads with one loud voice
Pay homage to "The People's Choice"

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
That brought victory to our ground

Lets raise a glass and lift it up
Then sip from Jimmy Collins cup
And hail the lads that won the crown
While turning baseball upside down

A one-off swing band named The Get Up to Get Downs (Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs was lead singer) wrote a song called "Griffey". Chorus went something like "With a sweeter swing than Griffey/Spread on more bread than Jiffy". Don't know if the song was about the ballplayer or an ode to PB&J's.

I was more of a punk/new wave than hardcore fan, though I did like Gang Green and GG Allin. The twenty somethings still give me a 'no way!' or 'wow' when I tell them I saw The Ramones (multiple times at The Paradise), The Clash, The Jam, Mission of Burma, Gang of Four, The Jam, The Stranglers or the DK's with Shaughnessy on drums (about a week before DH Peligro replaced him)

Dave Hogan,

You’re killing me. I was roaring when I read your list. Living in Virginia, from Waltham, went to UMass/Boston (across Morrissey Blvd from ‘Stab N Kill’). Some comments and additions that only someone who has lived inside 128 (NOT Rte 95) would appreciate.

3. or any carbonated beverage - Pepsi, Mountain Dew etc.
6. Rotaries – wahoo!
7. My SSN does begin with a 0.
8 and that you can walk from Park Street to Fenway when the Green Line is screwed up.
14. and Waltham. Wall and tham like ham not wall and thum like hum
21. and that the last train out of North Station is before the end of the concert at The Garden.
32. but you went to Nantasket Beach first.
33. and you know the one line that does not go to Kenmore Square and Fenway Park, but you never tell the tourists wearing out of town team hat/jerseys when the Huntington Train comes along.
37. Never have. But you still send the tourists there so they don’t go the the ‘bahs’ you like.
42. My mother still gets mad when she gets a milk shake instead of a frappe. And if you pronounce it Frappé you are either a Barney, yuppie or poser.
49. And when he says it is going to snow, he’s RIGHT.
53. or the Museum of Science
55. And when you hear his name your first thought is “I’ll be blasting you!!”
72. This one killed me. Or any Republican Governor. Hello Bill Weld.

My Additions

101. You went to Pizza Pad before or after a Red Sox game. It is now an f’n McD’s.
102. You went to a concert at The Rat, The Channel or The ‘dise’, and you saw a name band not just locals.
103. You don’t get sprinkles on your ice cream dammit. They are called Jimmies and they are chocolate.
104. It will always be Route 128 not 95 and it ends at the Braintree split not in Dedham/Milton.
105. You listened to Johnny Most announce Celtics games and you believed every other player in the league was a thug.
106. Every time you return you have to eat at least at Papa Gino’s, or D’Angelos if not one of the local favorites.
107. Your two week vacation every summer is the same weeks at the same cottage, hotel, or house down the Cape, the lakes of New Hampshire (or Newie) or the coast of Maine, preferably OOB (Old Orchard Beach for the uninitiated). Hampton Beach, Good Harbor, Nantasket, Revere Beach, Carson Beach, Singing Beach, Wingaersheak are all day trips.
108. The trip you talk about for six months before and after is Disney World, Aruba or Cancun. Rarely anyplace else.

For the record, I'm down with Cro Mags and Minor Threat too. Every now and then I see Ian on the street with his kids which kind of makes me literally lol. Especially near the former Wilson Center spot.

Johnny Most was one of a kind.

I know everyone didnt feel this way but I thought the team of Castiglione and Trupiano had perfect pitch for radio baseball.

I was a singer for harcore band in the 90's called L.O.S.( Lack of sense)...we played w/ cro mags at THE FASTLANE ( in asbury park n.j.)......we were like the 10 th opening bandsLOL....we played alot with a band called Lethal Agression, and many other hard core bands including Bad Brains, ect.....
I love Minor Threat as well. Love the songs "minor threat" and "guilty of being white".
Also love Cro Mags "we gotta know"

I'm a fan of punk and hardcore. I'm 24 so more into 90's- present hardcore. But of course I'm down with the classics. I seen Cro Mags a few years ago. Unfortunately missed youth of today and gorilla biscuits at rev 25 Chicago. All the late 80's bands are getting back together.

I'm glad I can give a laugh to everyone with the list. I'm originally from Worcester. I've been living next to Boston for about 25 years. I tell my wife that my mail is addressed to occupant not resident. I remember seeing Jay Leno at Sir Morgans Cove in Woosta before anyone even knew who he was. I also remember getting kicked out of Ralphs Chadwick Square Dinner when slam dancing was the rage. I had no clue what it was about. I thought people were trying to start a fight.

I lived in Mass, for almost 20 years a lifetime ago. I worked (let me stress WORKED) at Met State for a couple years.

Since you are originally from Woosta, I am surprised there was no mention of Spags. I think the lamps in the guest room STILL have Spags tags on their bottoms. Sir Morgan's Cove? I saw the Cochroaches there with free tickets from 'AAF. Turned out to be the Stones warming up for the Some Girls tour

Hampton Beach? I remember two seafood joints across the street from each other, Markey's and Brown's. I ate at one all the time because it was a BYOB place. I cannot, for the life of me, remember which it was. Also, I spent many a buzzed night at the Club Casino, seeing some great bands.

Spags has been gone for about 10 years now. The father died and the two daughters took over for a while and then sold it all to Building 19. A good stuff cheap place. It was one step above a flea market. That didn't last long. The buildings are all closed up now and has been for a few years.

Have you heard of CIV? It's the Gorilla Biscuits' singer's side gig. They're awesome. Set Your Goals (first album by them) is hardcore perfection

I'm watching COC: Live Volume right now.

I was sponsored by Foundation when I was 15. I was an amateur; they just gave me a bunch of free decks and told me to use them in competitions. Sure thing!

I miss skating. My knees are too messed up to do vert anymore. I grew up on Hosoi, Mountain, Hawk, Mullen, etc.

I've seen C.O.C a couple of times, last time was in support of the album "Deliverance" (which I think is the best album with Pepper singing). The best though (in my opinion) is "Animosity" with the bass player Mike Dean on vocals. Mike Dean is one of my all time favorite bass players.

Deliverance is by far the best Keenan album.

I've never really heard any pre-Pepper COC stuff. I'm gonna check some out tonight.

I'm now watching Anthrax: We've Come For You All.

That link I posted is to the song "Mad World" from the Animosity album, once you are there, the same person uploaded many tracks from Animosity. This is the first album that lead me to punk music back in the eighties. Still love it.

Sincerely, Clayton

I didn't even know their early stuff was punk. I just figured they were sludge/southern/stoner metal. I started listening to them when Deliverance came out in '94

I was listening to Slayer/Metallica/Exodus etc. and a skater turned me on to them. I loved how raw they were, and Mike Dean shreds on the bass. When I saw them touring in support of Deliverance, they set up on the floor of a small bar with just theater ropes around them It was like they were playing in the crowd- one of the best shows I've ever been to.

* Apologies for derailing the thread *

Sincerely, Clayton

Grew up on the south side tucked in behind the Calvary Cemetary across the river from Zayres. Do you remember the sign flashed Z-A-Y-R-E -Zayres!! I remember Wallex WHS Class of '77.

[QUOTE=Bocabirdman;1097357]Since you are originally from Woosta, I am surprised there was no mention of Spags. I think the lamps in the guest room STILL have Spags tags on their bottoms. The Stones were practicing out at Longview Farm Recording Studios. That is why they picked Sir Morgan's Cove to play at. Later changed its name to Lucky's. Two good shows I saw there were The Fleshtones, also saw them at Ralph's, and Peligro with D.H. Peligro from the Dead Kennedys on bass. I lived in Woosta for 5 years on Common St near the liquor store just up the street from Lake Q. Moved to Virginia from there 8 1/2 years ago.

Also, remember Spags was in Shrewsbury, not Worcester.

Just my opinion, but this is not a derailed thread at all. Sports and music are two of the great unifiers. It does not matter what you like, good music is good music. Gabba Gabba Hey!!!
