Default The 1894 Alpha's HAVE BEEN SOLD!

Posted By: dan mckee

This post is being done at the request of the buyer. The buyer's name, the amount, and the details of the transaction will remain confidential.

Please do not flood me with emails or calls as I will be in mourning for the next few months. I didn't want to sell them, I had no intentions of selling them, but was made an offer I couldn't refuse. Sincerely, Dan Mckee.

Dan,

Never thought we'd see this day. Sounds like I should offer you my congratulations and my condolences simultaneously. For you to part with them, I'm sure it must have been an offer that you will be happy with in the long run. I'm also sure it's going to sting, though.

-Ryan

Or maybe his first born! I'm not sure congrats is in order but to whomever bought the cards - CONGRATS to them! I also hopes he/she keeps the set intact and does not split them up. Now if only the Keeler would make an appearance.

....it was me. I sold all of my 1989 Topps cards to get the money for it. Thanks for the set, Dan! I won't tell anybody it was me that got it. Bryan, sorry buddy, but I still have my organs. I didn't need to sell them with all of my UV cards laying around!

I know the buyer... and will NEVER disclose who it is until or unless he wants to go public...

but I just wanted to let everyone know that it was NOT me.

The good news is that the new buyer is a great collector who really wanted the cards bad!!!

The BETTER news will take place if and when he sells me ONE of the cards!!

And condolences as well (as others have stated).

As long the offer that you "couldn't refuse" didn't involve a horses head then I'm sure you made out pretty well!

Thanks for sharing them with us before you set them free.

Scott

Dan- I may feel differently than the others who posted. All these cards will long outlive us and each of us who have owned something special have been a part of its history. But things don't stay in the same place forever, and we all have to make decisions, especially when they affect our current and future lives. If you were offered money far beyond what you ever expected, you did the right thing by selling. I would have done the same. And as Bob Dylan said: "Don't Look Back." (also attributed to Satchell Paige).

It seems like an incredible amount of high end cards and sets have changed ownership in the last few months.

Dan,
what'll it be? New Pool, Sportscar(s), Yacht or something boring like paying off your mortgage? Or do we all have to fear the R337Man in the foreseeable future?

Good timing, Dan. I was just about to refinance my house and am now thinking that you might want to hold the new loan!! Seriously, congratulations and condolences. You still have lots of really neat sets--as well as some fond memories of having owned the Alpha set. All my best. And thanks for sharing. --Lyman

is that we know what you are and you are just negotiating price

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Rolling naked in reams of $100 bills will definitely take the sting out o selling the set.

I appreciate Hal's kind words regarding my purchase of the 1894 Alpha's. I also appreciate Dan's discretion in his post. Dan is a super guy and a pleasure to work with. There have been many posts regarding the disposition of these remarkable cards in the future. Although I don't have anything worked out yet, the people that know my collecting habits, know that I will not be keeping the whole group together. My entire collection totals less than 10 cards (before the Alpha's), and I will probably only keep 2 or 3 for myself.

You just made Hal's night! It will be interesting to see how these cards are dispersed and what kind of $$$'s they go for. Would love to have just one, but would probably have to sell my whole collection off to get one.

edited spelling.

I don't know if breaking up the set made Hal's day or not. But, unfortunately for those seeking auction prices, the Alpha's will not be sold publicly.

Since I own the 1894 Betz cabinet that uses the exact same photos as the Alphas and is from the same year...

I am probably a little less inclined to spend big bucks on the Alphas (as Patrick and I have discussed).

Do I want one? Absolutely.

Will I go crazy to get one? No.

Do I have some good stuff to TRADE for one? Yes.

Will Patrick be interested in my stuff? ...
