Default How much of a deal breaker is paper loss on the back of a card for you?

I kind of waffle back and forth on this and was interested to read some other opinions. How much does paper loss on the back of a card (from scrapbook removal, as an example) bother you if the front of the card presents well? Would you buy an iconic card graded as a "1" with significant paper loss on the back, or would it would bother you every time you looked at the card?

Thanks in advance for any opinions.

The only time that it really matters is when I buy the card for the back...Drum, Uzit, etc.

Sometimes I'm actually grateful for the paper loss, because it makes a card affordable that still displays well on the front.

100% agree with Sean, sometimes it makes it a deal and not a deal breaker. I've seen many T206's with beautiful fronts with great color, registration and centering, and non-existent creases have about 1/4 of the card with paper loss on the back and you can get the card at a pretty good value most of the time.

Now if it's something where the back matters, T205, 50's topps, a rare T206 back, I suppose it makes a difference. But. considering my budget, it helps if I make compromises.

I wouldn't want a card with back damage for my type-card collection, unless it was originally issued with a blank back. But, for the master Sam Rice collection I am working on, I'll gladly accept a rare card with back damage, because I may never see another one - here are a couple of examples:

If the card is a blank back card, then I don't mind if there are small paper pulls or writing.

On a card with a back that has writing or is ornate then a very small paper pull is ok with me as long as it doesn't detract from the overall appearance of the card.

I collect a fair amount of cards with blank backs or postcard backs. Every now and then I get one with writing or scrapbook residue. Usually I get these cards for less than half of what they would go for otherwise. I just bought an Exhibit Ruth that had some scrapbook residue, so it was graded PSA 1. But, it had the look of a PSA 3 all day. More than happy to pay PSA 1 money for that.

To me it really depends on the card. Common card I could find at any time, I'll pass. Rare card, even if the back matters, I usually don't care.

This is the only PSA graded and only 1 SGC graded.

I'll see what I can find for ya... So you'd say you're looking for a "HIGH END PSA/SGC 1" then...right?

Blank back is generally fine if there is damage but for my t205s, because the backs are part of the lure, no back damage for me.

Default A guy has to have standards

Here are front and back scans of my Diamond Stars Hornsby. I almost decided against this card because I thought there possibly was minor paper loss on the left border of the reverse.

I'm always on the lookout. I might have to let a couple cards go if one becomes available.

I collect for the front of the card - I actually prefer cards with back damage if the front is exceptional; makes the card much less expensive in many cases.

Sometimes paper loss can be your very best friend, that saves you money and still treats you to the high life:

The only cards where it would really concern me, is where I want to be able to read the back. Otherwise, I like getting a card that would be too expensive without the damage. Here are a few I've acquired in this category.

The glue stains and paper loss made this one harder for Chief Meyers to sign, but I would have pursued it as heavily without any back damage. Heck, maybe he even decided to write his signature so beautifully on the front only after having trouble with the back! You have to accept rare cards as you find them.

I simply love me some minor paper loss on the back when the front looks this good.
