I have sold a half dozen of these sets over the last 5 years. They sell for $700 to $800. Who on earth is paying $3K for this? These are fairly common unless I am missing some rare variation or something. I even have some still attached as they were issued with the baseball tag. I just don't get it. Dan.

which doesn't make them less generic, though.

"An exciting full set of the fragile, die-cut collectibles!"

This sentence alone makes me want to place a $5,000 bid. Seriously though, auction fever makes otherwise reasonable people do dumb things and already unreasonable people do incredibly stupid things with their hard-earned or not so hard-earned cash.

I am thinking about purchasing a fairly high-grade Baltimore example. Would $125 be too much for that? What would one typically sell for? Additionally, is this in the Standard Guide (I don't own one) AND I assume they are not eligible for professional grading?

James

$125 is full retail for Baltimore, Brooklyn and New York. Maybe $150 for New York, the pin stripes are cool on that one. The others fetch from $25 to $50 each. No matter how you add it up, you ain't getting to $3K !!

around at a national a couple years back and got about $450 or so. I was actually happy with that. They were in about VGEX to EX condition with no back damage either! They fail to mention Lew Lipsets assertion from his last auction:

"Lot 34. N352 Consolidated Cigarette Co. Rare Discovery of 4 19th Century Die Cut cards. Most collectors have seen the 19th century die cut set of ten which was issued in a sheet. To the best of my knowledge they have never been seen in any other form until now, though the 352 entry in the American Card Catalog makes reference to them. In this lot are two of the ten cards from the set (“Boston” and “Pittsburg”) and two similar cards, apparently from an English set. All four cards have been mounted on cards that were obviously especially made for these die cuts to be glued to. The backs of the card, which indicate Consolidated Cigarette Co, make clear reference to the baseball cards and others. Good to very good. MB $500."

Sold for $1464
