Default neat bid history

3 days into a 10 day auction. Our old friend carterscards2006. It looks a little off, but that could just be me.

What % of ebay card related transactions do you think are actually "arms length" transactions? I assume the real answer would be frightening.

Peter- I don't mean any offense, but when the f*** is something going to be done about this?? Every single week it's something. This is a topic that has been going on since King Kong was a spider monkey. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT... Alot of topics, alot of charges, alot of supposed proof, but not a freaking thing gets done. This is getting like the little boy who cried wolf....After a while, people are tired of listening....

Kevin,

Could you not tell from the thread title and who the OP was, what this was about?

Did you have to read it?

Kevin, I politely disagree. I think as long as these things go on we should point them out. At least it calls attention to the issue and doesn't sweep it under the rug. If you were a scammer you wouldn't like people calling attention to it, would you? I applaud Peter and those who call out alleged fraudulent situations.

This one is being discussed on the CU forum.

An interesting note: This is the bid history for a 1975 Topps Mini Robin Yount RC PSA 9. Currently it is 3 times more than it's usual hammer price. The 1975 George Breet RC PSA 9 recently spiked from $700 to $2000+ because of a random sale (with questionable bid history) and the market just ballooned.

It would be interesting to see if the 1975 Topps Mini Yount market sees a big spike as a result of this.

Leon- agreed...but at some point, what is the point? If nothing gets done, then what is the use? Some of these people have been talked about forever on this board...Probstein, Brent Huigens, etc.... So what is the solution? I can assure you, they are going to keep on rocking and rolling profit wise....

I don't know the solution but I hope it keeps getting talked about. If it gets enough attention called to it then eventually something usually gets done, or changed. I hope the people that get attention called to them will change their ways. If they keep seeing their name in lights they just may.

I know it has changed my bidding. I don't bid on auctions anymore from certain sellers. It's been tough recently, because they had several cards I'm looking for.

To those who say posting on these boards isn't getting anything done about these problems, my response is just think of all the new people who come to these boards and read about this crap and learn that it is going on. Just because the scammers aren't being arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned doesn't mean there isn't some good that comes out of these posts.

I can see a person (especially a young person) being interested in pre - war and/or graded cards getting taken by one or two of these scammers and then decide to give this whole hobby up and never come back. How much does THAT hurt the ability for us to sell OUR stuff when the time comes?

On the flip side, I can imagine a person wanting to collect pre - war and/or graded cards and they find this forum, read these threads and they get educated on this crap and don't fall for it. They then feel better about themselves and WANT to stay engaged in this hobby.

Finally, for those who say they are tired of Peter posting about this stuff and why doesn't HE do something about it. The questions are, 1) why do you continue to read and post a response if you don't like what Peter is writing and 2) why don't YOU do something about it?

By some people's responses, it sounds as if Peter is some pee on that is just shouting into the wind while they are a heavy hitter that could get something done IF they wanted to. Well, either get something done to stop or curb these messes OR stop complaining about guys like Peter who are bringing these situations to our attention.

David

For the record, I am not just pissing into the wind for the hell of it. I have spoken about hobby issues with law enforcement, and I have been assured that law enforcement reads the Board and that posting here is one way to bring matters to their attention. Now granted that is no assurance that anything will result from it, but even if it's tilting against windmills, it's better than being a sheep.

I am admittedly not a huge buyer, but what I have learned about Probstein and PWCC - from my own observations and the information posted on this board - has led me to decide to never do business in any way with those two.

Sharing this information matters.

Todd I don't think they make any sound, they just pay record prices and admire their altered cards.

If I see a lot which has a bidder/bidders with bid retraction/s I don't bother to bid. It has changed my bidding ways on eBay for sure. The only thing which scares me more are the auctions where we can't see this going on. I hope other auction houses are taking notice & cleaning up their acts if need be.
I applaud those who bring these things to our board & for us to read.
Thank you

If this bothers you, then do something. Specifically, make a large bid early. Watch it get shilled to above your maximum and then retracted to just below it. Then do your own retraction with 12 hours left (the latest allowed) and watch the shiller get stuck with it and pay fees on the inflated price. Works best with consignors.

Agreed.

We have been exposing (via blogging, Net54, AML, Video) autograph forgeries for a long time and just because it seems like nothing is being done, doesn't mean we should stop.

I will never stop exposing autograph forgeries, sellers of forgeries and idiot authenticators as long as I am breathing.

I hear it all of the time on the other side (paraphrasing) "It's the same thing over and over again." Yes it is, and as long as it continues, I'll continue to do what I do.

Who still places bids in ebay without sniping? Just asking for trouble.

I too appreciate the info about the unreputable dealers. Makes me think twice before commiting to bid on one of their items, and I certainly bid low side with them just in case . . .

As a new person into this hobby I really appreciate all the info and feedback on this forum. I get early sight on pitfalls and now know what sellers to avoid although I'm sure I'll make mistakes on the journey into the Monster. I enjoy this hobby and would hate being ripped off and possibly ending my interest in cards. So please keep up the great work and I hope as I evolve I too will be able to contribute to a safe hobby environment. Thanks all who share the same concerns I'm sure we all have.

PWCC has a card in their current auction that I REALLY WANT HARD. NO CHANCE I will bid on it.

I'm glad that you post these threads. This hobby gets better each time a scammer gets caught. Great job Peter - keep it up.

Things were a lot more work before Ebay.

Depending on exactly when, there were always odd difficulties. And just as much scamming. Of course, the money was a lot less.
