Default Nagy lots/ best guess

Posted By: bill smith

Hello again. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to give me their best guess on what a few of my Father In Laws cards would go for in the end. I relize this might give away someones secert bids and therefore be a really bad question to ask. We will find out but I have wanted to ask this question in this forum for a while now and just thought I'd throw it out there. The cards I'd like to hear about are as follows:
LOT 2657-T206 Wagner
Lot 2669-T206 Cobb/W Cobb back
Lot 2670-T206 Plank
Lot 2683-1911 E94 Close Candy Cobb
Lot 2665-1910 Washington Times Crawford
All these cards are from Frank Nagy's collection on Mastronet.com

If this will cause any problems at all please forget I asked and forgive a foolish question.
Thank you,
Bill

We love to guess on nice items like this!!

LOT 2657-T206 Wagner 525K (some corporation will win it)

Lot 2669-T206 Cobb/W Cobb back 38k (I'll be the under bidder)

Lot 2670-T206 Plank 24K (wrong time to be selling it) others on the market within the last couple of months.

Lot 2683-1911 E94 Close Candy Cobb 22K (10K more than I would go)

Lot 2665-1910 Washington Times Crawford At least 16K becuase this is on the hot list being a type collector.. I hope it does not go up too much more as I want it!!!

Sorry Bill, but my over/under comes in a little lower:

LOT 2657-T206 Wagner - $427,000
Lot 2669-T206 Cobb/W Cobb back - $32,800
Lot 2670-T206 Plank - $24,000
Lot 2683-1911 E94 Close Candy Cobb - $19,700
Lot 2665-1910 Washington Times Crawford - $21,500

Bill: I hope I am wrong, especially on the Wagner card, since the two previous posters had it substantially higher. I have bought in the last three MastroNet auctions and paid close attention to many many cards in those auctions. Most did not get significant play in the last couple days...maybe just a couple bids. Clearly, your cards are not like "most."

Edited to say: My guesses reflect sales price (excluding hammer).

As you can see everyone is just guessing; educated guesses for sure, but it's really tough to assess such rare items in this volatile market. I say wait until the end, and I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised.

I tend to follow items as well. Normally in major auctions, the percentages of the final price break down like this

IE: If a Just So card got 10,000 in the end the bidding would be like this:

Opening price 750.00
1st day 25% 2500 highest bid
middle part 50% 7500 is bid
last day 25% 10,000 final price at close

These figures seem to hold up on most items...

Listen, I want to thank all of you for your expert opinions.
I noticed most of the big ticket items have not had any bidding the last few days and was wondering if that was normal. I didn't know if things would change near the end and thought most of you would be able to give me a good idea of how things might go.
I've only been reading your posts for a few months and have enjoyed both your sence of humor and your insite into a world I only knew through my Father In Law.
Again thanks to all, have a wonderful holliday. I hope each and everyone of you get what your after, honest I do.
Bill

A nicer Wagner failed to sell for $425,000 last year at this time. The current bid works out to about $400,000.
I would be surprised if it moved any higher.

The pattern of almost all auctions is a huge feeding frenzy at the beginning, a lull during the middle week to ten days, and then another flurry of activity the final night. Some lots are near their max going into the last day, others will double or triple the last night. There is no rhyme or reason to this; it depends solely on which combination of biders are after the lot.

The Board Members above were all a tad on the high side. Is the bubble about to burst?

Kidding of course.

DJ

DJ:

The Plank was trimmed, was it not? I can't remember, but I think it was, which would explain the low price for that one.

The Cobb/Cobb had a big piece of paper missing on front and may have been the worst example of the 13 cards known to exist... so $30,000 for that one is also understandable.

When you add in the VIG, the Wagner price seems pretty close to what most expected.

These cards went for more reasonable prices thatn I expected. I've obsessed about the closing prices in this auction since Thursday night. They seemed out of sight, but my obsession almost solely revolves around the price of the T204 Ramly Johnson. The only card in the auction that I REALLY wanted. I honestly thought I would have a chance at the $12,000 to $14,000 range plus Vig. I bid to $15,565 and (insert Don Adams voice here) "missed it by that much." Holy cow!!! A total price of $42,000. I don't get it... the last I looked I think SGC and PSA had graded 22 of these.
