Star Co. Baseball individual player sets?

Is there any strong following for these mid-80s to early 90's sets? And what to their print runs look like?

They were something else to chase. Lucky for me, I was only collecting Dave Winfield. Would have been murder to chase someone like Mattingly or Canseco at the time.

I have several of the Wade Boggs sets. I don't think they really caught on in baseball.

Not sure on print runs. They had some "limited" edition sets. Problem was the only difference is the limited edition sets have a gold sticker with a hand written number on them.

If interested in pics of the plain gold sticker limited edition set let me know.

Yes, please post pics. I am not aware of those...the only "limited" runs I am aware of are the "nova" series.

Here is an example. The Limited Edition sets are the ones with the gold sticker. Nothing else is different.

Never caught on really, personally I would put the collector interest level around the same level as Broders.

I think a huge reason for the popularity of basketball is easily explained by having zero competition at the time and holding so many rookies.

I had a couple with autos of the top card. I know I had a Boggs and Clemens set. I bought them in the 90s so I don’t know if they originally came like that. The Clemens was numbered as I remember

I think part of why they don't get more interest is that there isn't a good catalog of them.
And that may be because they fin an odd loophole in the licensing. As I remember it, they wanted to do a full set, but couldn't get licensed for MLB but could for the minors.
But MLB only licensed sets with more than I think 6 players, so Star did each player individually.

And they did lots of "different" similar sets.

Eventually super glossy or not.

Press runs could be pretty low, or not.... but all the numbers I saw claimed were in dealers ads and may or may not have come direct from the company.

I had a Yaz set of these. Bought them from Galasso through SCD. I think I sold it in a cleanout awhile back

The early sets were somewhat easy to keep track of, but by 90-92 time frame, there were so many different sets, promos, prototypes and parallels, you easily lost track if you were not an expert.

My interest was only initially with the Garvey 1984 bagged set and autographed bag set, then I dabbled in some of the Frank Thomas cards in the 90s. Apparently the auto set was /500. The unsigned set must have been about 5 Billion sets!

TCDB probably has the most complete catalog of Star Company sets, but even with a former employee contributing there, new sets keep being found and added every few of months. Another glossy Griffey set was added within the last month.

I have a few PSA registry sets..

1989 white back - 11 cards
1989 yellow back - 11 cards
Assorted promos
1988 Star silver edition - 10 cards
1988-89 Star Nova - 10 cards

Just way too many.. still ain’t cheap for Griffey either.
