Default T205 Eddie Collins (closed mouth) at REA

Can anyone explain why this card has already gone to $720 (with buyer's premium)? Low grade, the more common version, not a rare back, typically sold for $100-200 until recently. Any ideas? https://bid.robertedwardauctions.com...e?itemid=98821

Is the elephant not usually yellow? Is this similar to the 69 Mantle white letter variant?

Wow $960 with buyers premium. It does have nice eye appeal but going beyond a premium. Must have 2 eager bidders

I would be willing to bet it is either owned by Engle or is going to be bought by them.

Auction house did not do seller justice by not mentioning yellow elephant. For a T205 guys is very desirable variation card. Even fun to just see one.

On very thin ice even mildly criticizing the AH. Tread carefully. Cult members will pounce.

REA should know this stuff. They are like the Net54 of AH's. This T205 Collins Yellow Elephant variation has been around and accepted from at least 2014 to present if not a little earlier. No they cant catch everything but I bet the seller knew and it was most likely written on the consignees form. For what they f'ck us buyers out of in juice they could at least do the seller a solid and get the descriptions correct.

The current description reads:

"Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Philadelphia Athletics Hall of Famer Eddie Collins. This example features a very scarce yellow elephant on the front; most commonly the elephant is white. Reserve $10."

Was this revised overnight or did some of you guys not read it? If the former, goes to show you that REA pays attention and corrects missed details. I've had only good experiences as a consignor with them.

Since I’m seeing my name mentioned in this thread I felt it was necessary to respond. First and foremost, I am not the consignor of the card in question (nor is my father).

FWIW, discussion around the Collins “Yellow Elephant” first started sometime in early 2012 after I won an example in a major auction house that now resides in a SGC 60/5 holder.

I made a thread soon after outlining my thoughts and to my surprise a few other examples surfaced – simply Google “T205 Yellow Elephant Net54” to see the thread that I am referencing.

Although this oddity is technically not recognized by any of the hobby publications or TPGs, I do feel that the argument could be made in the long run. Either way, I'm happy to see this card starting to get the recognition it deserves.

It still stings when I see one of these cards. I did a Buy It Now for a raw one at $202.99 back on 5/12/2015 on eBay from Dean's Cards. A week later, they sent me a refund and told me the card sold on their website before I purchased it. It was on eBay for less that 30 minutes. This variation haunts me. I was literally talking to someone about it yesterday, and now I see this post today. I'd take a shot at winning this one, but money is not the same as it was back in 2015 for me. Congrats to whoever wins this card.

The REA card is the 4th one I've seen.

Raw Honest Long Cut (Dean's Cards)
SGC 50 Piedmont 25
SGC 60 Piedmont 25
PSA 2 Piedmont 25 (Current REA Card)

Turner, So glad you could respond. I hope you and your pops are doing well my friend. I wasn't super sure of the year but I do remember the conversation took place when I discussed the Graham Blue and Black sigs with you. I was super excited to see something new that was in plain sight for over 100 years. Lol. I believe between you and I there has been several new variations pointed out in the T205 set. Can't wait to see what else gets shaken from the Tree of 205's.

This board taught what I know and has more to teach than I could learn in a lifetime. I have always been curious and love the feeling of finding something new that has just been overlooked. Unfortunately I do this for a job too but the contractors are typically pissed when I show up for inspection. Have to have safe roads and bridges to drive to card shows right

For the T205 collectors that have been complaining for years that the T205 variations don't get the recognition that the T206 variations do it's nice to see an un-cataloged T205 variation that was "not listed properly" (it was in the top 10 in bids before this thread was started at 35) at a price that's already higher than some of the recent sales of cataloged T206 variations.

It is good to see that the T205 Eddie Collins yellow elephant in the room is finally getting discussed.

Brian (but still the normal T205 Collins makes for a great white elephant gift)

I'm a little surprised at the hammer on this because it is a superb example. Even got a boost here prior to auction end. Also an example of a card I'd keep in it's holder. As much as I don't care for tpg's, the gold borders really pop in SGC holders.

Something I'm wondering...does the strong closing price of the yellow elephant version have any meaningful effect on the price of the (much more common) white elephant version?
