Default '58 Hires Test Mays

Had to wait a while for this to clear customs from Canada, but I'm loving the colors here.

Technically late May purchases but just getting around to posting them. Roberto just arrived today. Jackie's case is a little nicked up. Very happy with these two!

I picked a few things up on eBay that should be arriving soon. This mint condition '75 Phillies team card was in the mailbox when I got home today.

Very nice centered, Jackie.
Certainly a tough card to find that well centered and without a tilt.

Congrats on it and your Clemente.

I'm quite proud of this one! To my knowledge it's the first time one of these has changed hands in almost a decade.

Sold cards and traded cards to get this card. Only one card remains to complete the set all from non-eBay avenues. Spahn will complete the set.

Strangely, I "upgraded" my PSA 6 Greenberg with a PSA 5 I had to have the centering for my set. The Medwick isn't quite spot on--but it's the best I've found the last couple of years...

This set is a bitch but so pretty and interesting to me. This is my favorite--along with Black Hawk Sioux and Red Cloud, in the set.

Had a short weekend getaway with the wife, and I found a card shop in antique store I went into. Had lots of vintage stuff. Had a stack of around 120 different from 1955T that were probably in Ex-Mt overall (low numbers were NM, high numbers were Ex). Also had about 60 different 1956T in VG-Ex to Ex, a lot of around 90 from 1955B in VG-Ex to Ex and had a lot of around 40-50 from 1963T in Ex-Mt shape.

He offered me the lot of 1955T for $400 (was probably 75-80 low #s and 30+ high #s and a total BV of close to $2k), but I had to pass. My wife would've killed me had I spent that much on baseball cards.

But I did pick up a few things. I got the 55B for a friend, picked up a Ex to Ex-Mt 1957T Reese that is now in my partial set at home and a 1978 Time magazine that features the Cowboys-Broncos Super Bowl. I also got the following. Spent $40 on everthing:

Ain't that the way it always is. My wife has told me if I will sell something then I can buy something. And I ask, how will my collection grow if I'm going in a circle all the time?

Thanks! The artwork on the 1950, 1951, and 1952 Bowmans make them my favorite sets.

I also really like the Art Deco look of the Diamond Stars cards...which I can see from your post above that you recently acquired a couple great looking ones. Are you chasing that set?

I considered trying to build that one raw because the artwork is so cool...but those high numbers are a little spendy.

Nice Feller!

My scanner doesn't work very well with slabbed cards as can be seen with this example but one thing I was told on here to get better scans is to scan with the lid up in a dark room.

For slabbed cards, and even top loaded cards, from what I understand, a CVV scanner is the only way to go. Many threads exist here on this site talking about different scanners and techniques for better scans. Do a Google search but put in net54 after your inquiry as I find that way better than using the search function here.

Yes, I am prodding along on the Diamond Stars. It's almost 3 years in now. They are all centered. The Medwick and Rowe are among the elusive stars for me--centered. Centering is the most important attribute to me, followed by color and focus. Corner wear doesn't bother me too much at all.
The early Bowmans--especially 1950-- also present centering challenges above the norm for me.

Thank you! If I ever find a Billy Martin to match, I'll retire happy, Lol.
'52 Berra is kind of an ugly card when he's out of focus, don't you think?.

Nice pickups. Love that '55 Clemente. I'm 20% through the '55 Topps set and the Clemente and Koufax will be the biggest challenges.

Not sure all folks realize just how rare this is.
Incredible pick up. Just WOW!

Truthfully, I think all cards out of focus look a little odd/ugly to me, but it is what it is.
Although I, and likely everyone else would prefer perfectly focused and centered cards, trying to obtain those everytime is a rather tough endeavor, especially when it comes to the older cards that most on here collect and enjoy.

Again, your's is a real stunner and one you don't see in that grade/condition very often.

You're right about that Ray. Since Clemente died December 31, 1972 there was a limited window of opportunity for him to sign that card. Really nice.

This pales in comparison to what is usually found here, but I got one of my favorite cards of all time, as Topps captured (ignore the airbrushed Dodgers uniform) Frank Robby's full, majestic swing on this beautiful 1973 offering...

...for a grand total (card, shipping, tax) of...wait for it...only $9.20!!!! Sure, it's a tad bit o/c, but the corners are sharp and it was priced less than what it costs to get a card graded in the first place, so I am loving it!!!

Got this beauty in the mail today. I like the fact the back is centered.

The early Bowmans--especially 1950-- also present centering challenges above the norm for me.
EDIT: (I just realized this wrote this in the POST WWII forum - apologies - I saw the other pre-war cards and got jazzed).

I just dove back into collecting (first purchases since I was a kid in the 90s) after a few beers last night.

I love the Diamond Stars. So I grabbed a Bill Dickey that’s not in great shape and a decent looking Sam Rice. I’m starting with HOF from sets that I dig and I’m trying to spend less than 35 dollars a pop to start. I also grabbed a 1953 Bowman Roy Campanella.

Color and Clarity of the fronts are what I particularly enjoy and I’m even partial to interesting markings made along the way by kids, etc.

I’m excited and hopeful that I’ll be happy once I get my goods (sellers accept returns).

Any specific watch-outs or tips regarding the Diamond Stars is and will be much appreciated.

Excited to find this forum and dive back into the hobby! I’ll post images once I have them!

Got this 1962 Topps Tony Kubek in the mail today. I've been looking for a nicely centered one for a while. Released it from its slab and put it in my binder...

I love that card too and wish it was a full blown Dodger card.
That would have been amazing.
