Was at Jim Ryan's show this morning. For some reason I was leafing through his bargain boxes, which I normally don't do. I came across a handful of 1952 Topps and i don't know why I went through them since I do not need any low numbers. I was stunned when I came across this. I was speechless and could not say anything. I went to pull $12.00 out of my wallet when he said $10! I felt guilty, knowing Jim as well as I do and with all of the great sales we have made over the years, I brought the card to his attention and was even willing to cancel the transaction, which he declined. I have had great bargains in the past with cards, but this one is on another level.

I don't know the 1952 set well. Is there a reason this card stands out above others in the low series?

Good for you to call it to his attention, and good for him as a seller to complete the transaction at his initial price offer afterwards.

While it is well known among 52 set collectors I do not think it is recognized yet by PSA. Nor is it listed in my last SCD catalog, which admittedly is a few years old. Not sure about Beckett's.

I've noticed, and seen it spoke of before, and that is the green tinge on House's neck on the yellow tiger card.

Some seem to have it and some don't. Is there any difference/reason for it?

I completely agree. Most others, I would of grabbed the card and ran, but I could not do that to Jim. This is a tribute to his kindness and fairness.

Yes, good catch Irv! One is a printing error or variation, unsure if it was done on purpose. While the other, is a variation where the red was omitted on purpose. House was printed more than once on different parts of the sheet. This is why the gray back exists with either all red, or no red.... but there none of the inbetweeners. That's another discussion!

The old adage, there are no such thing as coincidences may apply here. What would be the odds that one house didn't have the red to begin with, and the other just happened to have something obscure the red exactly on the logo?

In my humble opinion, I dont believe the red ink on the green throat card was obscured or "ran out". I believe the red mask was stoned off over a brief period to match the yellow tiger. Maybe it was easier than trying to add red? When they went too far and noticed the missing red on his throat, they reset the whole mask and both were continued to printed with the red in the logo. I think there are too few of them for it to have happened all the way through production, so I believe it happened early on and was subsequently corrected.

Back to the gray backs. If a few leftover gray sheets from the 2nd series where run at the beginning of series 3, some would have the yellow tiger, some would have the red tiger, but there wouldn't be any inbetween as the red mask over the tiger wouldn't have been changed to match.

Pardon the early morning rambling

Overall it was a very good show. There were plenty of 52 highs and I picked up 4 of them. It was raining heavily when I left for the show and this caused the cancelation of an air show, so it was felt people went to this show instead.

Thanks for the printing analysis Ted.

Amazing what you can learn while trolling eBay for pricing errors :-)

Thanks for the explanation, Ted. The variations/errors/anomalies seem never ending with the 52 Topps series cards, but, imo, those make them all that much more interesting.
