Default 1954 Topps Aaron counterfeits in PSA holders "show and tell"

known as "Craigslist Fakes"

Here is an active auction for one...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=280604404994

Below is a pic I made showing 2 of the fakes (middle 2) with 2 authentic cards.

*Notice that the fakes have the same exact Bar Code
*Notice on the small action pose, the face and arms, especially the fingers lack detail and are way too dark.
*Notice the lighter areas are too light (orange, skin of color portrait), when compared to the darker areas which are too dark (shadows under hat, hair)

I emailed the current seller of this fake "psa 7" and he sent me back a couple b.s. excuses pleading ignorance, about how this is not a fake its from psa, it's a bad photo, etc. I've reported it to eBay but what else can I do? I remember that this card I think was being sold as authentic a few weeks ago and now it's resurfaced --not sure if the current owner bought it from the original scammer? Right now someone is on the hook for over 1K...

I like your pointing out of the arms how the fake has completely black arms and the original more detail...
Here is the current auction:

The cert number seems to pass in PSA. I can see the detail is not as good as the others. It looks like the auction is still going on. Sucks to be the "winner". This thread caught my eye because I just bought an Aaron off of ebay, I had to go back and check, but were good. Good catch.

Very interesting - and disturbing post. But what about the holder itself? Are there any telltale signs that would be a dead giveaway that the holder has been tampered with? This one looks slightly frosted, but not so much from the scans that it would give me pause and make me think it is a fake. I wonder how these fakes can be made without causing noticeable damage to the holder. More insight is appreciated.
Thanks. Rob

I dont even look at the holders much now. Both fakes in the middle have different types of holders.

The left fake has what looks like a very similar holder to a real PSA one, if not a real one, if you look at the gap they make in the upper card corner area ("corner cutout to see cards corner"), it the same size and design as a real holder. Other parts of the holder are similar if not exactly the same.

The right fake has a completely different type of holder, its "corner cutout to see cards corners" are much larger, and on a better scan its obvious they are not exactly the same as a real PSA holder when you compare them close. If I remember right this type of fake holders has corners (outside corners of the holder) that are more rounded than the real PSA holders.

PS. The best place to look is the flip, Many of these Craigslist Fakes have the same Bar Code
If you go to this old post where these Craigslist fakes were first "outed" http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=89073
Go to page 5 and there is still a picture of many of the flips lined up together and you can see they are all the same.. Bowman Mantle, T206 Cobb, '54 Aaron, Goudey Ruth, etc. all have the same bar codes.

Thumbs up

Very disturbing indeed. Makes me wonder if my 54 Red Heart Mantle PSA 4 is even legit...lol

But it is, because I know what to look for. I do my research on what it is I'm buying regardless. I think it all comes down to card knowledge. IMO, "knowing" what you are buying regardless of the holder, price, seller, etc...is what it all comes down too. It's just to bad that there are people like this that are still scaming others to make a a few bucks.

It's just upsetting.

Good topic and thanks for sharing this!!

I agree. Looks like the same bar code format almost. Kinda hard to tell up close, but by giving it a quick look, it looks like the same person from the Craigs list scandals?

Interesting stuff.
