Default 1916 M101 Ruth rookie

What happened during the printing process to cause some of the examples of this card--but not others--to display what might be termed a "white rod" exiting from the Babe's left thigh? Something on the plate, which was subsequently removed? Or defective plate in this respect, and another subsequently made to correct the flaw?

Just curious if there are any answers out there about something I've always wondered about,

Larry

I think it was something on the printing plate or in the printing process itself (kind of stating the obvious)....That line bugs me a little bit and I don't think it's as pronounced on some copies.

Yes it would appear that something went amiss in the printing process. However, the Ruths displaying this trait are in the minority. It also seems to me that this flaw is found only in the m101-5 versions. Although Ruth bears the same card number in both sets and looks for all intents and purposes identical, I believe I have seen the print line only on blank back and Famous & Barr cards-- none with backs that are exclusive to m101-4. I never gave it a whole lot of thought however.
