Default January 2014 Pickups

Happy New Year everyone... Starting 2014 off, the same way I ended 2013, with some minor league pickups.

David...I love seeing ball players in their minor league days. They look so young and skinny! Here are a few to add to my Griffey collection...

I'll tack on a few more minor league cards.. Walker has always been on of my favorite players, couldn't pass on the lot..

Used my ebay bucks on the beater(possibly trimmed) Clemens. Not a card that I was necessarily in the market for, BUT the price was right in my wheelhouse, thanks to the condition...

Last edited by novakjr; 01-03-2014 at 05:12 PM. Reason: added Clemens..

My first modern purchase in a long time. Thought I'd do a little speculating. I think this guy can have a huge year.

I remember the BO TRADED image so vividly from 1986. That whole traded set in fact has what are, to my memory, iconic images. Heck, even Cangelosi! But that was one heck of a class in that set. Steroids aside, that one set had a ton of stars.

Off the top of my head. Bo, Bonds, Mitchell, Clark, Bonilla, Canseco, Joyner, Kruk, Galarraga, and Leyland. Maybe that class didn't hold up well in the long run. But I agree, for a minute there, that was one hell of a rookie card class..

What a crew that was in its day; all stars. I even remember the Incaviglia, Tartabull, and there was a Brewers Rob Deer card too I think. What a set that was!

switched directions... Tiffany Cecil. 1990 SCD Jordan, I believe this is the first card that he appears on in a baseball uni, and the 1990 Hoops Sam Vincent card that got pulled because Jordan was wearing the 12 jersey... Stadium Club BB Bo missing foil, and the Stadium Club FB Bo, with blank back..

Mark Grace had more hits during the decade of the 90's than any other player.

I always kind of liked him, even though I am a Cardinal fan.

Very impressive, staying atop all those Bryce Harper cards. I'd find that task daunting for sure. Congrats!

t206blogcom are those PC cards or are you flipping them? Either way with all the Harper PSA 10 cards you have shown that is 1 impressive collection.

Thanks Ben for the kind words. I'm a Harper fan and a Nationals season ticket holder. I picked up a few of his rookie cards in PSA 10, then a few more, then I started to amass stacks of his cards. As a result, I decided to go after the master set on the PSA registry for the heck of it. Personal collection, but I do sell dupes (hard to keep track of what I have at times) and raw versions once I obtain graded examples. I went from finishing a T206 set to collecting modern slabbed cards; quite the difference. I'm sure at some point I'll get tired of trying to keep up with the latest releases and sell them off, but having fun at the moment.

Jason, it does seem odd to go from prewar to modern like you did, but I'm in the same boat. Although I haven't completed any set yet, I collect pretty much anything...from T206's to anything modern. In my opinion, it's refreshing to go back and forth from old to new...different eras and different things to appreciate about them. I love collecting VG type cards from 100+ years ago and Gem Mint cards from today...never gets old!! Good luck on your ongoing Harper collecting quest...very impressive indeed!

Agreed. It keeps things interesting to dabble in a little of everything. HOF rookies give a great mix of everything. For a while there it seemed I was strictly pre-war, because I had most modern RCs already. The minor league rookies seemed to have drug me back to modern, and somehow led me to get busy again on my Bo Jackson collection, that I haven't touched in 20+years... Collecting Bo seems to bring back so many memories of why I truly loved the hobby as a kid...I imagine Jason is getting a similar joy from his Harper collection.. Sometimes it just takes something shiny and new to make you feel like a kid again.. Hopefully Bryce's future turns out better than Bo's did.. Although, it's amazing how a guy can go from Legend, to nearly forgotten, then all of the sudden 20 years later dude's Legendary status returns... Bo items seem to have picked up a lot of steam in the past few years..

David, couldn't have said it better myself. When I started collecting prewar three years ago, it didn't take me long to get totally hooked. Before 2011, it was all modern for me without a drop of thought about prewar...but once I changed, I still did not give up on post war cards...just slowed down. I collect a plethora of modern players, HOF RC's and just individual players...and a lot of them are from my childhood, like you said...they connect us to them as we grew up watching them.

One of the players I collect is Griffey Jr. He started in the league when I was 10 yrs old and he was one of the best from that point on. So many memories of going to the card shop with my cousin, seeing and buying '80's and '90's cards...great memories for sure. I go after the Griffey's that I used to love when I collected back then...they spark a lot of great memories for me, not to mention some of those cards I could never afford! So it is somewhat surreal (in a way) to obtain some cards that I could only gaze at when I was a kid. The great thing is that most of them cost at or under the $10 range and that's in Gem Mint condition

Bo Jackson was a beast and he IS a legend IMO...one of my pure favorites from year's back. There only has to be one reason to collect what anyone chooses to and the rest is history. But I do believe one game cements how great Bo Jackson was....TECMO BOWL

Collect what you like!!! There are so many reasons to do so

Not buying cards is getting to me, so I picked up this Yount as part of my master set to scratch that itch. Nothing fancy, but it will do for now.

A couple Reds 5-star and a great Ryan from a box of Tier One my wife bought me for my b-day. Thanks for the look!

That's one nice looking Yount! Congrats Bill!

Did the packers have a QB with the same name as you or did you edit the name? That would be pretty sweet if they did have a QB with the same name.

Thank you, Mike.

Nope, it's a screenie from a Tecmo Bowl ROM. If you go to tecmobowl.org, you can download a NES emulator and play the game on your computer. Members of the website update the ROM every year for new players, trades, team moves (so it has all the current teams instead of the teams back when Tecmo Bowl was sold), etc. There's also an editor, so you can put yourself on the team should you choose. You pick your jersey #, position, set your attributes, and even pick which picture you want. You can also pick which plays are in your team's "playbook".

Naturally I made myself Rodgers' backup, because while I had to suffer through the indignity of watching Seneca Wallace, Scott Tolzien and then Matt Flynn play quarterback in the 8 weeks Aaron was out injured, I didn't have to do the same in the game. I run like Kaepernick and throw like Rodgers, Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

Edit: George, those autos are beautiful. Especially the Bench. Unfortunately, players nowadays don't sign cards that nicely. The last really great signer was Griffey Jr. I understand these guys sign thousands of cards, but they're being paid a lot of money to do it, so you'd think they would take their time to do it right.

Thanks Bill, I do love the look of the 5 star. I have three young sons who love the shiney stuff, so I get sucked in. Trying hard not to buy a box of '14 topps this week.

I completely agree with you. There are, on occasion, rare moments of someone taking the time though. This always impressed me.

Default Bradley

That is a nice one Arthur. Is Mr Bradley going to break out this year ?

In October I was on a reposition cruise from Montreal to Miami on the Regent Seven Seas Voyager. One of the stops was Boston. By sheer luck this born and raised St Louis guy docked in Boston on the morning of October 31

Not sure breakout is the term for what he's going to do. From what I hear, his ceiling is that of a poor man's Jacoby Ellsbury. I'm much more excited about Bogaerts and Henry Owens, although I think Owens is still a year away from his call.

The Cardinals certainly have no shortage of young impressive talent. Rosenthal, Martinez, Tavarez, seems like it never ends.

Did you enjoy your stay in Boston?

Arthur, I'd forgotten about Bradley. That's a pretty nice signature, to be sure.

Occasionally, there are really great players with nice signatures. Shelby Miller is one. He actually delivers a pretty decent one.

Unfortunately, far too many of the Bowman Chrome prospect autos I have look more like this:

And that was the nicest Taveras auto I could find. Sad.

So, you're saying he's gonna be Grady Sizemore(when he was healthy, that is)..

Heck of a nice Yount Bill. That card pops in that scan.

Jackie Bradley Jr. has a really nice signature. I wish I wrote that well.
