Default It's Raining Memorabilia....

Posted By: Dan Bretta

This has been by far my best 3-4 month stretch in collecting Lincoln and Nebraska Indians items. It seems that every time I log into ebay I am finding another item after going at least 6 months without finding anything at all. These items all arrived in the mail today.

1906 Lincoln Duckling (Western League) postcard - First one I've ever seen. Did not know it existed until I saw it on ebay two weeks ago. The Ducklings were named for their manager William "Ducky" Holmes. Too bad it wasn't one year later as the 1907 team had Eddie Cicotte on it, but hey I'll probably never see another one of these.

Two Nebraska Indians postcards - one is an upgrade and the colorized one is one that I've been after for a while now.

And finally got the third Lincoln pinback to complete the set (I think?)

Dan-

I've been watching in amazement at how many difficult and rare items from Nebraska you've picked up lately. Congratulations!

When are you going to find that Nebraska Indians jersey?

Clint, thanks....as for the jersey now that is a dream item. Doubtful that any have survived, but you never know. I have seen a Nebraska prison baseball team postcard where one of the players is wearing a jersey with a faded out "Nebraska Indians" lettering on the front. I wonder if Guy Green just donated all the old jerseys?

Think positive Dan, sometimes just the mention of an item makes them appear. I think somewhere one is just waiting to be found. I found another NI postcard variartion from a 1998 Oregon Trail auction. Have you seen this variation?

I've seen it just recently in I think it was a Collectible Classics auction. Joann pointed it out to me and I tried to sign up to bid, but the auction company didn't register me in time. I never got any confirmation at all, but now I seem to be on their email list. So I don't know if I can bid in their auctions now or not?

I have an old Oregon Trail auction catalog that has a Nebraska Indians handbill in it that is very cool. I wonder where that thing is now.

How is your Wichita and Kansas hunt coming along? I'm guessing you've seen all the Smokey Joe Wood stuff up for auction at the moment? If not email me.

Dan,

Your experience in trying to register with Classic Collectibles (or whatever the name is) auction is identical to the one I had two auctions ago. And like you, I'm now on their mailing list but can't access the site to bid. I'm pretty comfortable with computers and Web sites, and I spent about 10 minutes trying to bid after registering. No dice.

I probably should have called them and I really wanted that postcard, but I thought they would register me in time as there were a few days left to go.

Dan- I've picked up a couple things lately. One was a contract of Ralph Winegarner who coached the Wichita Indians. I also picked up an NBC champions bat similar to the World Series black bats. My big pick up was one of the Joe Wood lots. I'll post some pics when I receive it. I will say it's something I've wanted since first seeing it about 12 years ago.

I'd post some pics of the first two but they're rather generic.

Clint, can't wait to see what you picked up....and I'd like to see a picture of the bat too. Not too generic for me.

I absolutely love minor league baseball and have been attending a bunch of games this summer. Finally my son is old enough to sit through at least some of the game without getting too antsy to go play in the park or the bouncy house. Last night was poster giveaway night and my son got about 15 of the players to sign his poster. His favorite player is Pichi Balet, last years American Association player of the year. He can't stop talking about him. I wonder will my son search out Lincoln Saltdogs memorabilia when he gets older?

Dan- Here's the bat I was talking about. It's from the 1962 NBC champion Wichita Dreamliners. These were given to players, coaches and sponsors. It lists all of the players names on it. No big names but a few Kansas Hall of Famers.

Very nice Clint....where did you obtain it?

I wonder if anything like that exists for Lincoln? They were Western League Champs in 1956 and 57.

Thanks Dan. I got this one from ebay. They issued these starting in 1950. I have about 9 different ones. I've never seen a minor league black bat but have seen other semi pro bats and softball champion bats. I don't believe any team from Nebraska won the NBC tournament while these were offered. They give out rings now.
