Right now, my vote goes to this one. With today's prices, I dont think I will ever find another that looks so nice.

My first Ruth strip card, sold to Lyman for $100 and is now pictured on oldcardboard.com. This was before I knew what I was doing too.

There is a long wrinkle that is difficult to see - you can sort of make part of it out in plank's forehead.

But the T213-3 overprint Cobb and Kotton Mathewson in great shape come to mind. I also regret selling off a set of E97s and E98s as it has proved difficult and costly to later replace them. My biggest regret, though, was selling an E95 Wagner in exmt about 6 years ago. Dumb!

As far as value.....

T3 Matty EX+/NRMT sold for $2,000....... seen an ad yesterday for a PSA6 that sold for $43,000+ (page 9 in new Old Cardboard Mag). Mine looked just as good if not better.

T214 Tinker PSA2 sold for $1,000 (but I picked it up for $350 on eBay misidentified as a T206)

A bunch of midgrade T211, T215, T216, D304, D322 cards.... too many to list. Sold a few years back before they all jumped.

About 15 V117, 5 V89, 8 Holland Ice Cream cards (including the only known #16), 5 Uncle Jacks, etc. all sold (only a couple years ago) for a fraction of what they go for today.

For about a third of what it is worth. Wanted to give the buyer a nice deal as a gesture of thank's for the business.

Bought a really nice raw E107 Plank at 95 St. Louis national. Had it graded - came back PSA 8. Mastro auctioned it for me - really wish I still had it. No scan but it is in a Mastro catalogue from several years ago. Wonder where it's new home is?

Trades listed too:
N150 John L. Sullivan
1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle: paid $3.25 at auction for it. Won't see that price again...
E and R collection: auctioned (pissed) away via Teletrade--remember that racket?
T206s: I traded or sold off a pile of HOFers about 20 years ago, including Speaker and Matty. At least I kept the Johnson ready to pitch.

Dang, JimB, those Cobb's would make me cry.
Not a card, but I bought a Hillerich and Bradsby early 1900's baseball bat rack at an antique show for $65.00 and sold for $1000.00, unfortunately they sell in the $10,000.00 range now. In fact if anyone gets SCD, someone is selling reproductions for $3995.00.

I had 113 Cobbs and NOT NO MORE !.....if I had to do it all over again, NO !

I did get 5 Jax Cracker Jacks and owned 7 total, but 13
Victory tobbacos came from 3 parties and 5 Boston Garters came from 3 parties and I feel good about those , but the
longevity it took to accumulate them and to see 70 of them
go to 2 parties, was overwhelming . We all want diversity ,
but it can come with regret....Iam still having fun though.

What did you get for the Brunners? I think that's Cobb's best card (not to rub it in). This is one that went in a trade (for a Goudey Ruth).

Jim B,

that D304 Cobb is a knock-out.
Just picked up a '15 CJ Cobb, so I can understand your pain--in my opinion, the nicest card ever produced (nicest card in my collection, that's for sure--will never leave it).

John, Nice Jackie. I have always loved that card. I've got a lower grade copy that I doubt I will ever trade. The D304 went for a high grade T206 Cobb - comparable financial value, but a lot easier to find. That D304 will be irreplacable in that condition. Oh well. I know it has a happy home now.

Man
1914 Cracker Jack Johnson, Cobb and a few others
1915 Cracker Jack Jackson.

I look at it this way, I bought something with that money so I guess it's all good, but MAN I wish I had those cards back.

James Gallo

Looking for 1915 Cracker Jacks and 1909-11 American Caramel E90-1.

It's kind of a loaded question, since with the market rising at such a rapid pace, in theory anything that anybody ever sold would be a regrettable decision. I've been selling baseball cards for 25 years and I guess I would like them all back. The record price I thought I got in 1987 doesn't look so good today. I bought a low grade Wagner for $8250 in 1986 and auctioned it a year and a half later for 18K. I was ecstatic! Looking back, guess I gave it away. If the market was in a freefall, I doubt anyone would regret selling anything, since all could be bought back more cheaply. And don't think it's impossible that that day won't come.

Very interesting perspective. I'm relatively new to the hobby, when was the last "market free-fall" and what triggered it? What do you see as possible reasons or events that one could happen again?

I actually do not believe the market will freefall. On the other hand, it can't go up forever and it could recede some. No market goes up forever- not art, real estate, gold, diamonds, whatever... so eventually there will be some adjustment. I remember the early 90's was weak- when the Copeland sale took place in 1991, I don't think the market was that strong. I remember the mid-90's market for 19th century wasn't good- I was afraid back then to keep Old Judges in stock because you couldn't give them away. And after 9/11, the market took a hit. But it's been non-stop upwards since then, which is pretty remarkable. But as I like to say "all vacations have to end sometime." But don't ask me to guess when, I haven't a clue.

In early Topps and Bowmans in the early 1980's. When gold and silver exploded, so did the then "vintage" card market. The 1952 Topps Mantle went from about $500 at the beginning of 1979 to $3K in early 1980 right back to $500 by the fall of 1982. Then these cards stayed stable or slightly upwards until a response to black monday in 1987 helped trigger a major explosion in Topps/Bowman.

I regret selling my collection of nearly 300 T210's with Stengel in the last REA auction...I was lead to believe that NOW (then) was the time to sell...so I sent off my cards last October only to get the shaft. Rob (REA) e-mailed me after the auction telling me he would not charge anything if I decided to consign in his next auction, because he felt bad regarding the end result...I have to say...dealing with Rob Lifson was NOT a mistake, he is a class act. But, my timing on selling my collection was only a benefit to the buyer......

Dave,

The Stengel brought market value, I sold a raw VG for $17,500. The group given the condition also fared quite well compared to Ebay sales. The T210 market is so thin, especially when the 3 most active buyers have now neared completion and you and myself are not bidding, the prices have returned to "normal". This is probably one of the most overbought sets of the last 12 months.

I am surprised that I do not have an extensive list but the one card that bugs me selling was a T206 Coles, PSA 7, the card was awesome. I know though it is in the good hands of one of our board contributors.

Rich -

I rememember exactly when that 1952 Topps Mantle sank. A collector paid $500 for it at the Columbia Hilton show in Columbia, Maryland. I'm not sure what grade it was exactly, though.

The old Columbia, Hilton show *sigh8. What will it take to get that back together? That location could make it one of the best on the East Coast.

I have too many to list but the 2 that hurt the most are a 51 Mantle, I paid $300 for it, sold it for $7200, it sold several times, the last times for $29,500 then I heard it ended up in a PSA 10 holder...ouch !!!

then I sold a guy who worked in my office a T-206 mathewson, raw for $3500, mega bucks at the time.....yrs later sent it to PSA, Came back a 9, he sold it in a major auction for around $35k.... this card was from the virginia T-206 find
