Has anyone ever seen one of these the seller is not guranteeing the signature or returning money if it not real. Sorry if someone was watching this and I outed them but I was just curious as to whether people think the signature is real. Personally I think the ink looks way to bright to have been signed before Christy Died.

Thanks, Henry Eshelman

Consider that Mathewson's autograph is one of the rarest and most
valuable in the hobby. Consider that if this card was in a PSA/DNA
holder few of us on this board could afford the winning bid.
Consider that the card is not in a PSA or similar holder and
PSA charges only $20 to authenticate and grade a signed baseball card.

The biggest giveaway is the height of the letter s. Much to tall also the t being crossed by the loop from the m, the t is found alway's crossed on it's own.

The slant on the letters is too extreme even though it a small area to sign. The crosses on his "t" should be slanted down to the right. Not a very good attempt.

Upper Deck will probably win it and then cut the signature off the card and slap it on one of their cards, it'd be a 1 of 1.

Maybe they'll just section it out - one person can win the first name and someone else can win the last name...

I am no expert, but.... I own a Matty signed ball and have seen 5 other signatures and everyone has the "M" in Mathewson and the "C" in Christy signed identically and these two letters are different. Also all 6 have a short downhill slanted cross on the "t" in Christy. Unfortunately, this one does not. Granted he may have signed it on a hot day while racing to a checkers tournament but still there would be those tell-tale signs stated above. I'd pass...

If this was slabbed and came in one of those suffocating PSA (or SGC) holders and sent to Mastro...this could easily fetch five figures. People are paying amazing price for the most common signed T206's, (Marquard) and with Mathewson checks selling for around $20,000, this would truly be defined as "one of a kind" if not the only example in existence. In saying that (caveat emptor), I suggest the services of authenticators that were spoken of in a "nice way" on the Real Sports broadcast before shelling out money for this bad boy.

Bidding starts at $199.99.

I emailed the seller and told him to please remove the fake before some poor sucker buys it and this was his reply...

"Thank you for the advice...I'm not selling it as an authentic signature, only as an authentic T206 card, which it is unquestionably.

Have a good evening."

Sad, very very sad.

I am not selling this as an authentic signature of Mathewson.
The above is a statement from the seller.
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH HIM!

What I find unfortunate is assuming that the signature is a fake, that Matty doesn't look too bad overall - maybe a 30? The attempt at a forged signature really ruins the card.

Mathewson is a rare signature, no doubt, but FAR from one of the rarest in the hobby. Other contemporaries of Mathewson are FAR more rare than he is. People like Chesbro, Waddell and Keeler all died near to Mathewsons death date, but there is probably 10 authentic Matty's for every one of them out there. The fact that there IS cancelled checks is a testament to that. There are also many of his contemporaries who only have 1-2 known examples of their signatures, if any at all. So, Matty is rare, but far from one of the rarest autographs in the hobby. Just one of the most in demand.

As far as this signature is concerned, it looks like one of those that came up for sale about 2 years ago with a bunch of real vintage cards with fake autographs on them. In fact, A John Montgomery Ward "fake signed" Buchner card just sold again last week. 100% Fake, but would still grade a PSA 2(MK) wouldn't it?

Just found the link on the Ward
