Default All's Quiet on the Football Front

Where is everybody these days? Board is awful quiet.

Anybody bidding on anything in the REA auction ending today?

I'm up on a few things right now.

I have been peeking in from time to time but, like you said, there's not much happening. This time of year, I am eat up by baseball fever. However, when October/November rolls around, I will get back into a football collecting frame of mind. At that point, I will go back to finishing a high-grade '66 Topps football set and/or upgrading my mid-grade '69 Topps football set.

So who got what in REA from a football perspective? Some great, great items in the auction.

I managed to win the two (1935 and 1936) Pabst Football displays.

(1935 for the Pug Rentner and 1936 for Cliff Battles and Riley Smith)

Very cool pickups!

I was able to snag three 14x11 lobby cards depicting scenes from the Red Grange movie One Minute To Play. They aren't in great shape but I've never seen these before! Plan to clean them up a bit and get them framed for my basement.

@jeff Those are really neat. I really like movie lobby cards in general, they usually have interesting images and the 14x11 makes them easier to collect and store than movie posters. In another life, I could see myself collecting lobby cards.

You hinted at "cleaning" them up for display. I'm curious what kind of cleaning methods are you considering? I'm usually too scared I'm going to damage something to even think about cleaning it up.

@andy. Thanks! Makes me feel better that you think they are undervalued. I'm glad I got them, but I felt like I stretched a little on both. It's been a slow several months with few pickups for me, and I somehow managed to keep myself out of the bidding war for the Overland Candy wrapper Baugh in your auction last month, so was willing to reach to get these as my consolation prize.

Didn't mean anything sinister. Just going to look them over and decide how to make them present well. Things I've done in the past for items I planned to display:

1. Overlap the edges with a mat when framing to hide edge wear, small tears, stains. I might decide to mat these tight around the images to remove as much staining / writing as possible.

2. Depending upon the weight of the piece, material, printing technique, consider lightly cleaning the surface with water if I think I can remove dirt or staining. Don't know if I would risk giving these a bath, though. I usually experiment with a small corner that I'm planning to mat over anyway just to see what is possible to clean off.

3. Realign any large tears so they aren't as visible

4. Use a backing that matches the background color of the piece so any holes or large tears are less noticeable

I've framed a few "rough" pieces using this approach and they turned out pretty good! Of course, there are professional restorers out there that can do all sort of interesting things to items but I've never used any of them so don't know what else is possible. Plus I like items that are in their original state ... not something that has been doctored.

jeff

Picked up this nice cabinet photo of the 1904 University of Michigan football team. Pre-1905 Michigan football photos are really tough to come by.

I've also created a website dedicated to Frank Hinkey and the 1890s Yale football teams. Take a look when time permits.

www.frankhinkey.com

Thanks

Mark

Sold my 1955 All American #68, The Four Horsemen on ebay yesterday for $3.99 (w/shipping) after forgetting to post a reserve. So, I'm pretty stoked about that right now.

Still grinding on the '77's, just under the radar. How's everyone?

Sorry Ty. Doing well. What cards to you need for 77? Maybe I can help you out as I have lots of doubles from the mid 70s.

Thanks Jeff, good to hear. I know you'd help if you could and appreciate it, but am down to those pesky Topps Mexicans. On a positive note I should have a new book out late this summer. This time about USAF Major San D. Francisco, a former Columbia River Basin football standout. Happy collecting sir.

This arrived from Heritage - a special item for me since this was my father's last game in the NFL - and I have a nice program to go with it

I felt lucky that the pass for the game went for 30% of the price of a ticket that was auctioned a while back - I was blown out of the water on that one.

Very cool pickup Rev. Would be neat to learn the backstory on all the Joe Carr pieces recently. How did someone find his scrapbook in a dumpster? Great team signed Giant program too.
