Default ca.1950 unknown/uncataloged cutout cards

Posted By: fkw

Im not the most experienced in the 1950s era (more PreWar)

What do you think this card is from?

I owned 3 players (have only 2 now) Monte Irvin (NY NL), Hank Thompson (NY NL), Luke Easter (Clev), and have yet to see another example in 27 years that I can remember. Roughly 2.75" by 4", handcut, thick card stock similar to a cereal box or another similar package. Time frame is 1949-54.

Anyone have one or have info??

Thanks Frank

I've never seen these before Frank. Were they all the same size? The reason I ask is that the Irvin looks hand cut with a lot more border than a kid might choose--maybe there were dotted lines or such where they were to be cut. Also interesting to note that all three of your cards depicted Negro League stars who were among the first to cross the color line. Maybe that was the theme of the set--just guessing.

Hello Frank, This looks like something I recall having back in my "orphans" file with the Standard Catalog of BBC. If memory serves (and it's going AWOL more often these days), I had some indication these were Puerto Rican or Cuban, based on production values and player selection.

Below are scans of the other 2 (I sold the Easter a while back)

The size varies a bit and there seems to be a line for the kid to cut along on the left or right edges of the 2 below. Like Bob said it is similar in design/style to cards issued in the Dominican Republic (borrowed photos, wide border, cardboard stock, cut from a box?), but these are a bit larger and should be 15 years older than the 1966 ones listed on page137 in the SCD.
