Default Need help identifying these 1970's? pins!

I have been as yet unable to identify the pins in the attached image. I own 3 of the Clemente pins, the McClain, a Mays pin (not pictured) and a Gayelord Perry (not pictured). I also owned a "proof"(square/rectangular cut) of a Rose which was purchased in the Barry Halper collection. Lelands also sold a 18 x 24 print of a Clemente clearly from the same photo shoot, but slightly different pose. The common thread is the style of the pins - a photo (seems like specifically shot for this issue) surrounded by a light to dark color fade. Anyone know anything about them? Seen any others? Thanks for any help.

There was a thread on these awhile back but I cannot recall the outcome. A search might work.

Default Just spent about 2 hours searching old threads

I couldn't find one that referenced these pins. Any guys that should know that I can ask? I searched for "pins" and checked every thread that seemed generic enough to be these. Thanks for the help Dave.

Howard,

If you do a search on Legendary's website (click the history tab), they sold a Clemente pin like the one that you have. They have it dated 1960s although I believe it to be early 1970s. I have also seen that pin sell 1-2 times on e-bay in the last 5 years or so, for much less than Legendary sold it for. I have a poster with the same image which I attributed the date from the 1970s...

A good person to talk to would be Paul Muchinsky, he may know more info, but I don't have his contact information....sorry. I have e-mailed him in the past about pinbacks and he was always very helpful and informative.

I was a long time Clemente collector, but have slowed collecting his items as I have focused mainly on pre-war for the past few years. I would enjoy seeing some of your more "difficult" Clemente items if you care to post them. I have always regretted not picking up the Sugardale and punch-out, but hey you can't have it all. However, I did acquire a couple of my "holy grail" items of his, including his nodder, the WADO pin, and some sigs. Looking forward to seeing some of your collection.

Mike

Hi Mike,

I have been collecting Clemente for 25+ years. I have purchased a few "old timers" collections. I am always on the lookout for items I don't have or upgrades/dupes of some of the rarer ones I do. That poster is sweet. I recall seeing a photo of the interior of the Clemente home with a large photo from the same shoot - I wonder if there was a tie in with sports City? I would be happy to post pics from my collection - anything particular you would like to see? I've started with a few interesting ones. If you are ever looking to sell all or part of your Clemente collection please keep me in mind. Items that are still on my wantlist:

1960 Bazooka complete box
1962 Dapper Dan Program
1967 Topps Disc
1968 Topps Disc
1967 Giant Stand up (proof version)
1960(1) Harmony Milk 8X10

Howard,

Great stuff!!! The pennant is my favorite, I like how they used the 68 3-D photo. Nice Sugardale...I remember the early days of e-bay when I saw one on e-bay that ended for under $150. I still kick myself.

Here are some of my favorites...

Howard,

I forgot to mention, I know a dealer who has either the 1967 or 1968 Topps Disc Clemente for sale. The problem I think is his asking price is pretty hefty, I believe he was asking for around $10,000. He may come down in price, but probably not substantial. Let me know if you want me to check for you.

Default Clemente pictures

Mike - I know Steve W. No thanks on the disc. The 68 Pennant is not mine (yet) and is not a picture - it's the real deal in the pennant! Beautiful Transogram! Any Bazooka Boxes, Kahn's or Venezuelan's? Any thoughts on turning Clemente into prewar ?
Scott, Mike and anyone else - enjoy some more pics. Scott - the team issued picture is either '55 or '56 - I have done a TON of research on the team issued photos and have many of them pegged or narrowed down. Just got the thought on the net54 boards to cross reference them with the yearbooks - so I will hopefully will be able to peg them even better. I am posting what I believe to be the '55 or '56(on the right) (depending on which one the above is) and what is definitely the '57 (on the left). The Prostar image may look familiar - as it is the same as the more common postcard issued in 1972, but this is the 16" X22" Poster! The newspaper is from 1954 when Clemente was with the Royals. Tell me if you are getting bored yet or want to see more! As always - anyone lookig to find rare or unusual Clemente items a new home, let me know!

I know these are probably the least interesting items to most collectors, but can anyone identify the three Clemente items that look like Jay's Publishing photos or team issues? I really like the batting pose one. Is it tough to find?

Hi Paul,

From the best information I have collected, all 3 are team issued photos. The "Bust" shot in the second post is 1957 for sure. My best guess would make the batting pose 1956 and the head shot 1955 - still have to compare to yearbooks - so I could be off. All 3 are ridiculously rare. Each is the only example I have ever seen. The '55 and '56 I picked up as part of a 30 year collection from a guy who grew up in Pittsburgh. The '57 I picked up as part of a 12 photo team set at a Robert Morris show ~8 years ago. Are you a Clemente collector?

-Howard

Ps. Do you like the stadium advertising card?

Wow -great Clemente items guys! I have to compare that bold auto to the one on the 67 Poster Sticker; my memory indicates they look the same which may help authenticate the 67 sticker.

EDIT-I am now advised the stickler auto is believed to be most likely ghost signed.

And one more round...

Some snapshots (one picturing Vera accepting Roberto's HOF plaque)

And a pretty tough photo viewer, when viewing pictures Clemente, Stargell and 3-4 other Pirates (have never seen another)...

Wow-that 68 Topps sticker proof sheet is amazing! FYI I had a similar Yankees photo viewer in 1971, when I was a yute. I remember it had the immortal Jake Gibbs within.

Dave,

Did you catch the 1971 numbered Bazooka sheet I posted earlier in the test issues thread? Any ideas where/how to cut it up? Thanks.

I was going to ask if that was numbered-kinda skimming right now, very pressed for time. Not sure about where to cut it, probably a hi tch print shop with laser cutter?

Default Clemente racks

Thanks for sharing John,

They were in the previous Mastro sale (prior to the one you won them in)- the night of the auction - I was the underbidder, so I bid on some other lots. The next day all of a sudden Mastro said I was the winner?? When inquiring, they said I was incorrect. I know what my eyes saw. As I didn't know what kind of "games" they were playing I said I didn't wan't them (much more interesting in light of the recent allegations against them)- silly me in hindsight - so they went into the next auction so you could win them! Do you collect packs? Clemente?

That is correct. I thought it was weird they were up again in the very next auction, figured it was a non paying bidder. If you were the winner the first time around I was the underunder bidder then LOL. If I remember right I got them for less than the final price the first time around.

I have a few packs:

baseball - at least 1 rak, cello AND wax pack 1968 thru 1979, 1978 thru 1980 wax trays too

football - 1968 thru 1976 for wax and cello packs, raks for 68 and 71 thru 74

basketball - at least one wax pack 1969/70 thru 1986/87 fleer plus a 73/74 wax tray

Here are pics of my PSA packs, roughly twice as many are GAI graded

Hi Larry,

The 1960 8x10 Black and White harmony Dairy. I've been on the heels of them a couple of times but just missed. One of those not crazy rare issues that has just eluded me. Thanks for looking. All the best.
