Default Boxing lot, O/T.. nah.....

I just want to know who ran me up on the boxing lot last night, with the (not so) hidden gem in it? Back and forth, back and forth......whomever it was "thanks" for stopping. This addict wasn't going to quit soon. Never seen that sheet before.

If you mean Legendary #198, not me. I already have what I need from the set. The lot went for pretty good money, though. BTW, the cards are in my book; that's where Legendary got the "W529-8" designation.

I didn't check the ACC (yet) and was wondering where they got the designation. It's not on OldCardboard,. Of course I have a type from you, Adam, but I still thought it might have been you bidding. Have you seen Ruth from the set before this? Do you know if there are other sheets with different baseball players, or do you have other info? I searched on the forum (here) and couldn't find where we have briefly spoken about them before. I only wanted the sheet and that is where I placed pretty much all of the value. I doubt the other 200ish cards will bring much in resale (shameless plug that I won't be keeping them ). Sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Thanks for any info.....

When I saw this thread, I was hoping you were going to start dabbling in prewar boxing, Leon! As a guy who collects both prewar baseball and boxing - this was a fun auction to watch.

BTW - strong price on the Red Sun Johnson - WOW!

Leon: yes, I have seen the sheet before as well as singles. I have not seen any others than are depicted on the sheet, and I have been tracking the set for years. The ACC designates all of the W529 types as W529 with little elaboration other than noting that some are reversed. I've identified five distinct strip subsets using exactly the same artwork and two more using artwork derived from the same originals, except that two horizontal cards have been replaced with vertical cards of the same guys. Then there is the set you picked up, which has the same artwork for the six boxers. I labeled that one type 8. It is a very, very tough issue. I got lucky and picked up a partial sheet [no Ruth] on Ebay, which got me the Benny Leonard I needed. Images of each type, 1 through 8:

Jeff, actually that price [$7000 plus vig] was a shadow of the last price at which this card sold. It is the same T226 Johnson that went for $19,120.00 in the 2009 Hull sale at Heritage. The E125 Jim Jeffries fared even worse, dropping from $19,120.00 to under $5,000.

Forgot all about the boxing cards that went off last night. Might of thrown in a bid or two.

Over-all, I'd have to say, as a somewhat boxing-card observer, the prices were fair-to-mild. Alot of good deals, semi-close steals, were had.

Actually Leon, I think you did quite well, those pesky extra strips do have a decent resale value

Man, I gott'a up date my Adam's Boxing book, my 2007 copy only goes up to 529-7.......
