of cabinet and similar photographs. I sold all my pre-1900 baseball images, stereo views and fancy cabinets like Newsboy and whatever when the prices exceeded what I could afford to buy them at. Just a thought that one doesn't have to ONLY concentrate on specific players or teams. I like photos sometimes that get me to thinking or make a general statement about the GAME of baseball. To me they are in fact "types" by my broad interpretation of what that means. I'm taking advantage of this thread to show a great thought provoking albumen mounted image and an interesting cabinet photo circa 1890 that I would welcome some thoughts on......

Nothing more I would look forward to after a game is a good smoke and a beer. Check out the "pipes"...... Anyone have thoughts about the two guys in uniform? Just returned from a college game or they dressed like that all the time?



I got this from David Hunt number of years back. I have it hanging and just like it. I imagine these were kegs of beer supplied to the ballparks (they were after all a good place to go to drink and gamble away from the women). Anyone with any thoughts?

great find. I know it must be exciting to find a thread to connect you with a family member AND without THIS board you may never have connected with it. VERY special. I searched for years to find a nice copy of the Mother's "Were only in it for the Money" album where MY mother created all the dresses they wore. She didn't play baseball though but broke quite a few balls in her day so maybe I'm not completely O/T

Henry, what is the size of that Philly Pool Hall photo? I love that image.

This is my favorite cabinet in my collection - 1882 - the only year they wore uniforms like these.


Here's an imperial cabinet circa 1900 -it's cockeyed because it doesn't fit on my scanner.

This is a wonderful image. As I mentioned on the Memorabilia side, I also collect old brewery advertising (from the state of RI - I have many images similar to this but none with the great baseball reference). I would assume that the kegs out front were for the Billiard Parlor/ Public House in the back rather than the ballfield. I can barely make out the scans but could you tell me what brand of beer is on the banner out front (Lang's)? There are also a couple of corner signs at the front entrance. Can you make out anything on them? Would love to see a detailed scan of this image. Extremely cool.

to play some hold 'em...... your raise is understood but I'd really like to draw you out to show an interior shot:-) When I return I will get the picture out again. It's back in my entryway (rich people have a foyer). It's interesting food for thought. It's the base ball returns thing that gets me. I always speculated it meant returns of a product - to wit - the beer barrels but have entertained other thoughts each time I examine it. It could be as simple as a banner to announce the sports return for another season. Before I forget the architecture and overall flavor of the piece always left me thinking - a big city in the northeast like Philadelphia or New York. Of note is that I am terrible at guessing....

I judge a man by
the way he runs the bases
the friends he keeps
and the hole cards he plays....

(edited to add that the window on the right side as you are looking at it has "...adelphi" or whatever as a relection (or so it appears at first glance-it isn't backwards-have to think about that) and I will get beck to you about the other signage. Not sure correct or not but I'll post a couple close-ups unless that is verboden. I have too much stuff to remember all the vagueries but appreciate your interest.)

I saw that "delphi" in the window. One would think it's Philadelphia, but the rest doesn't seem to fit in window. It's not a reflection, it's a reversed on glass painting. Hmmm
Anyway, shoot me any details you have on this.

Here's another confusing part...
If that banner does say Lang's Lager (I can't make it out), Lang's (according to my references here) was brewed in the thirties which doesn't make any sense at all based on the age of this photo which I would date to anywhere between 1895-1910.

I'm going to forward this photo to a beer dealer/good friend of mine to see if he has any ideas if you can get me some detailed scans. If anyone would know where this is, he would. He was one of the co-authors of a book we put out by Schiffer a few years back on New England Brewery advertising

There were interesting. I purchased the single player cabinet for $ 18.00. A year later, the team image was for sale. It came from the same photographer. Some have said that the player may be in both photos. You be the judge.

I would guess this is a pool hall in philly and that they have a board inside that relays what is happening at the ballpark so that people could follow the game.

"Baseball Returns Recieved Here" - In my opinion that means they are getting the scores of the games as they happen.

I had considered early on as I remember reading early reports of games posted in local saloons and such just as it had been done with early boxing. I think I dated it circa 1905-1919. It had a paper mount without embellishment I think and is an albumen process photo. Now with your mention coupled with Greg's thoughts as to the ownership of the kegs - seen on either side in the photos - perhaps I'm back to leaning in that direction. Posting a close-up and a better look by me.....

(edited to add the lengthily closer observance and not bump it. It definitely says Lang's Lager on draught either side of banner inside base ball (NOTE: TWO WORDS) returns received here. What appears to be two porcelain(?) signs on doorway say Sabin's Sample Room and Lang's Lager in the middle. Interesting paper broadside on door: Second Annual Encampment G................the REPUBLIC"- I surmise Grand Army of the Republic. The word "...ADELPHI (bottom of an A) appears reverse painted behind glass and under that sample room - 15 ball pool - so maybe advertising a Philadelphia STYLE room one could purchase? It would help to know what a sample room is. When did 15 ball pool become popular? The attire is certainly 1890 - 1910's. There is a sidewalk sandwich board which I can't see I didn't scan again because you took a nicer shot of my photo than I did and it's all there. I framed this when I bought it and back then I remembered every nuance about every piece and where i bought it and how much it cost and what I had to do to get it home. Yesh. Fotunately my mind is beyond all that. Unfortunately I remember little and even less CORRECTLY. Upon deeper thought with regard to the mount I think it actually had a 1890's style cheaper beige cardboard mount which would be consistent with the above suppositions. Anyway done with it. Sight size near 5 1/5" x 7 1/4" and I wouldn't have matted too much beyond that. If i was framing it now I'd keep the entire image on top of all mounting.... To each their own. Find me a super trade and maybe it's your's....

Dan, your eyes are way better than mine! If that's what the banner says that I agree with you 100% on your observation. If a better scan can be made, I feel pretty confident that I can trace down this beer, and therefore the area in which it would be distributed (in general). My directory, as I mentioned before, lists Lang's at a later date but I do know some people who know their stuff and I can pass it along to them. It's a neat piece. If it was for a Rhode Island beer, I would be jumping all over it.
