As you all know, we have been discussing on this board for a few days whether HOF Jim O'Rourke was or was not older than Minnie Minoso when he got a hit in 1904... and the research proved that he was.

As a result, I went to Wikipedia and every other research source that I could find on-line and submitted the CORRECTED information so that O'Rourke would get the credit he deserves and not Minoso.

But here is the really weird part:

JUST TWO DAYS after I decide to do this on a completely random wild goose chase...

ESPN actually runs a COLUMN today in which they mention O'Rourke's feat and they get it RIGHT... because they used my brand new Wikipedia information as a source!!

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/offbase/051214

(scroll down to the chart at the bottom of the article)

Just a small victory for the VINTAGE crowd... to see one of our own heroes vindicated and to see the record restored to its rightful owner!!

Hey- my note that Niekro won 121 games after age 40 is also on that list. Do you think somebody looked at this thread? I may be famous!

Given what you point out Barry...

I think it is VERY probable that someone read our thread and it spurred them into coming up with the idea for their chart and story.

Too coincidental to be anything else... considering that yesterday was the FIRST day ever that O'Rourke was cited in Wikipedia as the oldest player to hit safely in a game.

I once contacted the Pirates directly a couple years ago and stopped them from celebrating Jason Kendall breaking the teams all-time games caught record about a week before it was supposed to happen. They had George Gibsons total wrong by about 30 games or so.I explained everything to them and cited sources and then they went to SABR to make sure. Then i heard on the radio broadcast about 2 hours later than the Pirates were contacted by SABR when they realized the error and it was also announced in the local newspapers again the next day, again citing SABR as the source.

Anyway,Good job Hal,a lawyer did something good for once

Who is the oldest to hit a HR, steal a base, go into the stands after a fan ...

Edited to add:
Who was it that decked Don Zimmer a couple of years ago?

Pedro. But he sort of sidestepped Zimmers charge and tossed him to the ground.

I think "Ted Zanidakis" is a safe answer to any question that starts with:

"Who is the oldest..."

But of course he knows that I like him and that I am only playing!!

Ted looks younger in person than he really is. I think the hobby keeps him young. But I definitely think that information was taken off network54. I agree, too coincidental.

Now if only I could remember what (had nothing to do with baseball...). Everyone was horrified, because Wik appears in a lot of people's statements as a trusted sourse

More later. maybe. Is Ted older than I am?

A false Wikipedia 'biography'
By John Seigenthaler
"John Seigenthaler Sr. was the assistant to Attorney General Robert Kennedy in the early 1960's. For a brief time, he was thought to have been directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John, and his brother, Bobby. Nothing was ever proven."
— Wikipedia

This is a highly personal story about Internet character assassination. It could be your story.

I have no idea whose sick mind conceived the false, malicious "biography" that appeared under my name for 132 days on Wikipedia, the popular, online, free encyclopedia whose authors are unknown and virtually untraceable.

My intention of mentioning Minnie was not to create a debate of whether or not O'Rourke was older than Minnie when they got their hits at ages 53 and 54. I liked the thread and made a comment about a couple of "old" guys. It's nice to see that a little research will uncover an error.

Hal, you need to have Topps recall this card right away:

I think someone should also email this thread to Minnie so he knows whom to "thank" if he doesn't get the nod in February.

Wow!

That card has now become a rare ERROR card!!!

We should buy up bags and bags of them and corner the market... and then start selling them all back at insane prices!!

I guess this new info now means that Nick Altrock becomes the 3rd oldest to get a hit.

or was he always considered 3rd?

Steve
