Has there ever been a more maligned issue than this? IMO, it's justly earned. Yet, this is a mangy stray dog I just can't turn away. I can't figure out how mine got so abused, who'd handle these? It's a good thing they put the player names on the cards or who could tell who's who? But what a checklist! High concentration of future HOFers and contemporary stars (Hey, how did Nippy Jones sneak in there?) Here's 4 of my 1949 post-war, but post your wartime too. How many other sets can you say "wartime" about? This may be your only chance to post these monstrosities -- jump on it! Photoprints series very welcome if you got them.

Hey yesiree thar Paul -- them thar post-war MPs are like manna from heaven. Hey here's me own wartime ones you referred to. Took me a while to root them out of the hogslop. Had to yank the Medwick outta Bessie's mouth. Check out the Mize -- hit the ball so dang hard that the whole place was vibratin'. You wait, you built this thread -- they will come.

Right you are, Gil. Please take it as a compliment when I say you know your MPs.

The first post are the 49s. Numbering started at 100, many pictures (cartoons, really) are reprints from the earlier set. Practically all killer players so I wonder how a few like Nippy Jones and Hoot Evers snuck in there.

The second post's cards were actually intially issued in '43 (wartime), but I think they kept selling the same ones for a few years more, so '46 sounds okay to me.

To me, this is the set which bridges the gap of the war years. As such it is historically significant.
Adding to that is a rudimentary design, which some view as quaint, coupled with Joe D. and Williams in the same set (I believe) provides one way of portraying their MVP competition during the year of baseball's last .400 season. That is, other than DoublePlay - which incorporates extraneous players.

However, I think it has been shown that one of the sets employ generic player representations. I forget which one.

I"ll concede E91c's, but they are a whole lot worse than E91A's.
They give the W strip cards of the 20's a run for the all fugly set of all time.

Unfortunately, they were the last in the fugly series, which started with the 20s strip cards, were picked up in the mid-30s with the R337 Eclipse, and followed in the mid-40s with these MP&Co's. Thats almost three decades of fugly. Clearly a niche collection.

Just getting the fugly HOFers would be great!

If you throw in the e91c issue from around 1910, that really covers a great range of HOFers.

Wow, thanks Ted. I could never have imagined,
or thought about, these cards on a strip.
(You must have seen all kinds of items in all
your years of buying and selling.) This has a
way of actually "legitimizing" them. They kind
of even start too look good to me
