Default It's that time again: what are your goals for 2012

Now that it's almost the end of the year, I am starting to make collecting goals for 2012. For me, I would like to knock out three SGC-graded Cardinal team sets. I've settle a year from three decades: 1956 Topps (SGC 80 or higher), 1960 Topps (SGC 84 or higher), and 1972 Topps (SGC 84 or higher).

A year from now, I will be happy if I all three sets are finished \

What are your goals for 2012?

Default Mr Boyer

What made you a Boyer/Cardinals collector ? I am from St Louis originally ( 1950 to 1985 and 1990 to 1995. Went to Series in 3 stadiums..1964, 1967, 1968, 1982, 1985, 1987, 2004, and 2006 . Did not make 2011 but got a ticket for a son at SLU to game 6

Default A Cards fan in New York

Actually, I never watched Boyer play -- he played before I was born. I am 35. I did some research on him and liked what I read so I decided to collect him. I liked how all the others spoke about him, including Musial. I also enjoy the history of the Cardinals.

I have lived in the greater Syracuse area my whole life. The reason why I am a Cardinals fan is because 1982 was the first year that I watched the World Series and the Cards won. I have liked them ever since -- from Ozzie to Vince Coleman to Mark McGwire to Pujols and others today.

It's tough being a Cards fan in New York -- all my friends, my brother and others are Yankee fans.

I only been to St. Louis once. In 2006, the first year of the new stadium. I watched a Cards/Brewers game near the end of the season. The Cards were struggling and they defeated the Brewers that night. It was the game where the scoreboard showed that the Braves defeated the Astros, helping the Cards. The whole stadium started to do the Atlanta chop! It was awesome

Baseball
1)Finish piecing together my Topps sets from '75-79, and further progress on the early 70's..
2)the last of the key rookies from the 60's from my wantlist in lower-mid grade
1962 Uecker(not really key, I just want one)
1963 Stargell
1963 Rose
1967 Seaver
1967 Carew
1968 Ryan
3)Progress on the rest of my post-war HOF rookie want-list. One or more of either '54 Aaron, Banks, '55 Clemente, Koufax, '52 Mathews, Wilhelm, D. Williams, '51 Bowman Mantle, Mays, '49 Bowman Snider, Paige, Campanella, Robinson, Ashburn, Lemon, Roberts '48 Bowman Musial in lower grade.
4) No specific want-list, just more pre-war HOF, preferably rookies(or close) in low-grade.
5)a few more Harper's Weekly woodcuts..

Boxing/Wrestling
1)get last 2 cards for '38 Churchman Boxing set.
2)More progress on '48 Magic Photo Boxing and Wrestling.

Football
1)Progress on Heisman winner rookie cards..

Anyways. My comp crashed last week, and of course I didn't have anything backed up, so my checklists need to be completely re-done. So, I guess off the top of my head, these are my main goals..

Default I would like...

To finish my HOF collection (again). I thought I had completed it within my parameters in the spring but somehow missed two players that I shouldn't have that were never on my master list I used through the whole time.
Still need Joe Kelley and Jake Beckley from the T206 set.

Other than that just to comtinue to pick up cards I like. I have a few desires of quirky cards like a 53 Brodowski and a 66 Ueker to name a few. I suppose the big hope is to get a few other cards from various big names I only have one of. Like a 53 Jackie Robinson, a 54 Ted Williams and maybe a nice 50's example of a Mantle.

If some money starts to unexpectedly fall I suppose I would like to try to start the 52 Bowman set I have been dreaming about but I think that will probably take a few more years (and kids out of the house) to start to take shape.

I plan on working on my 1952 Bowman set as well. About half way currently. Also want to pick up a Cracker Jack HOFer from each year. Make it to a few more shows In the coming year.Being able to have the cards in hand is so much better than waiting for the mail ! I'm sure there will be more as the year progresses as it seems like my focus changes all the time. That's what is so great about this hobby there is always an endless amount of things to collect and ways to collect them .Brett

My goals are:

1.) DON'T start any new sets. This is my number one goal. I need to finish the ones I've started.

2.) Work on '52, '53, '55 and '56 Topps baseball sets.

3.) Work on '51 and '53 Bowman baseball sets.

4.) Finish my 1954 Topps baseball set (only missing Hank Aaron RC)

5.) Finish my 1961 Topps baseball set (only missing 4 cards)

6.) Pick up some pre-war HOFers

7.) Stay focused

Finish my 1947-66 Exhibit set. That's my only post war collecting goal. Everything else I take as it comes.

Funnily enough most of my goals have shifted dramatically in the last year as I went much more heavily into Non Sports.

On the baseball front I want to finish my '52 Topps Dodgers teams set, which is down to about a dozen highs. Still working on a few Topps baseball types, may finish all but the two or three toughest of those. Refocused my Monster into a Superbas team set and working on their T205 team set as well. Other than that I probably won't do any more baseball projects in 2012, although I'll possibly pick at my E card type run. I'll keep plugging on the "all genre" Topps type run thru 1980 though.

New projects: Topps and Bowman classic era NY Football Giants team sets and some Golden Age Topps NS sets such as World on Wheels and Freedom's War could be finished.

Pretty simple for me on the post-war side, just pick up the only three cards that I need for my collection, 1953-54 Venezuelan League - Luis Aparicio, 1963 San Diego Padres Team Issue - Tony Perez & 1952 Indianapolis Clowns Postcard - Hank Aaron. With only one example known to exist for each of these three cards, I should have them all in hand by around June or so.........

My only postwar project is my autographed 1984 Topps set. I pick them up here and there, but I would like to focus a little more strongly on the project and get some more of the multi-player cards checked off my list.

Currently have approximately 160 signed cards from this set, but the large number of multi-player cards is making it a bear to complete.

Being mostly a pre-War collector, the my only post-War "gotta haves" are:
1952 National Tea bread label - Mickey Vernon
1959 Topps Venezuelan - Mickey Vernon
1953-54 Briggs Hot Dogs - 2-card panel with Pete Runnels

Runnels and Vernon were my 2 favorite Senators when I was a kid, and I have all their other cards.

To Finish another set. My last card for a 1961 topps set is on its way so 2011's Goal will be accomplished. So 2012 another Set I am pretty close to a 54 bowman, otherwise 1963 Topps or 1965 Topps seem most likely.

I'd like to work on getting all the display pieces I've collected properly framed, and at the same time adding a few more, and some salesman panels.
I've got most of the Topps/Bowman/Fleer empty wax boxes, so having them shrink wrapped and properly displayed is a goal as well. Basically make it easier to enjoy what I've got, rather than adding more stuff.
Oh yeah, pick up a case or two of this years Heritage as well, still fun opening packs and putting together sets.

I hope to add the Kid Elberfeld - Washington - Portrait card to my ultra low grade T206 collection and continue to work on these sets:

1948 Bowman Football
1948 Bowman Basketball
1957 Bowman Basketball
1961 Bowman Basketball

...and most importantly, add some other highly desirable (but virtually worthless) Nate Colbert oddball cards/memorabilia to my collection!

Default 1971 Topps

My biggest goal for '12 is to finish my NM-MT unslabbed 1971 Topps set. I've been working on it off and on since 1984, and I'm happy to say I'm down to TWO cards, 649 and 650. Figures both are SP high numbers. It's impossible to find these on eBay for less than $$$ (read: big bucks), but I'm patient enough to wait for a good auction deal. Other than the '71s, my other goal is to keep accumulating good examples of Topps cards (commons mostly) from the 1960-1968 sets -- and to keep working on my '59 Topps set.

Default Kiss

I've applied the KISS principle on myself (Keep It Simple Stupid) as it comes to collecting this year...Upgrade/complete '57, 71, 75 BB sets. Pick up a few nice Clementes and Mantles this year. Not sure I will have enough $ in 2012 but at some point would like a few HOFers/key cards from t206/T205. (Cobb, WoJo, etc.). Maybe add a Hindu or BL if the $ is right...

I need to slow down on collecting. Im spending to much time reading your threads here almost everyday. Need to time on my investment accounts.

I should be recieving some of my best T205s cards back from SGC today (happy with all the grades), and I have a bunch more to send in or cross over.

Also sell/trade off all my non-sports. Will be trading vintage and pre-war BB to focus on my signature list also.

Early HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all.

Default Clemente, Clemente, Clemente

As the focus of my collecting has been Roberto Clemente and I have almost everything I know exists, collecting has gottne a bit boring. That said there are those couple of things I need and hope as for years past that this will be the year I find them:

1960 Complete Bazooka box with Clemente
1958 Kahns mid grade Clemente
1960 Harmony Milk 8x10
Any Clemente item that I don't know exists

So - anyone out there want to help get 2012 started early?

In the meantime I have started collecting some Venezuelan Superstars and wouldn't mind adding a few in 2012 including:

1959 - Mantle, Koufax
1964 - Yaz, Mantle, Rose, Aaron
1966 - Mays
1967 - Clemente, Rose, Yaz
1968 - Clemente, Ryan, Bench, Rose, Seaver, Carew
1972 - Rose, Bench

Since I started back into collecting last November, I came into 2011 without any goals. I did manage to find my niche and managed to complete several sets: 1974, 1977, and 1978. Going into 2012, I'd like to finish at least 4 of the 6 sets I have active and consider achievable:

1971 Topps - I am basically down to the high number series.
1976 Topps
2004 Fleer Greats of the Game - I have the base set. I just need to complete the insert series. I may try and get a few more of the autos, but it isn't anything I intend to actively work on.
2001, 2002, 2011 Topps Heritage

I'd also like to continue making progress on two sets that I consider long term projects:

- Mid quality 1956 Topps
- NRMT 1963 Fleer

I also have set what I would consider negative goals:

- Do not buy any 2012 products, except Heritage.
- Start fewer sets than I complete.

My first goal is to get rid of all my cards after 1979 except HOFers. Second, is to focus and stay focused on my Philly A's and Phillies vintage collection. Hopefully I can complete some team sets by the end of 2012.

I'm going to take a crack at 1953 Bowman color. It's always been one of my favorites. I'm basically starting from scratch, so if anyone has some I'd love to trade!

Great thread! Always cool to see what other collectors are up to.

My goals for 2012:

1. Finish '52 Bowman (7 high-numbers to go)

2. Finish '75 and '77 Topps to complete my '73 through '80 "pack-opening years" run (handful left, I've just been lazy)

3. Add playing-days card of two of the following: Ruth, Gehrig, Wagner, Johnson, Lajoie, Speaker

4. Start a new, not overly ambitious set project ('63 Fleer, '64 Topps Giants are a couple of possibilities)

threads like this actually help me focus my collecting, was very scattered over the years and the annual GOALS thread makes me take a look at my collection in general

so here goes
1974 TOPPS , currently at about 90% in psa 9, looking to get it to 95%
R312 currently at about 50% in psa/sgc/raw form, would like to get it to 75% and all SGC graded

and last but not least
start one more set this year
leaning towards
T3 HOF
but might go with T207 or T205 HOF

good luck on all your 2012 goals
