Default Wow! Big $ for raw card.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1954-Bowman-...#ht_527wt_1270

Pretty big gamble if you ask me, I believe that this card would have to come back as a 8 for the buyer to even break even on the purchase.

Interesting to note that all of their auctions, and also all of their feedback, appears to be private.

closeup corner pics also looked doctored to me. The corners are too sharp and dont match the color of the edges.

Crazy $$ without a guarantee that the card will grade with a number grade.

As much as I could care less grading cards, with a high value card you really have no choice. I've seen so many doctored cards.
No way would I pay that kind of price for an ungraded card.

This card was in a BVG 7 holder that sold for $1979.89 on eBay (10.20.2011).

Nice catch....do you have the auction # on it?

There are so many red flags with this auction that anyone paying 6k will eventually learn a tough lesson here...if it is even a legit bid?

Here is a link to the BVG 7 that already ended. After looking at them it is difficult for me to tell they are the same card. I have tried comparing the two but the raw one seems to have more pointed corners. It might be the same one and am just curious what gave it away for you?

On the raw card, there is a print dot on the bottom right of the back, in the red box right above the word "ans". This print does does not appear on the BVG card. Likewise, on the BVG card, there is a print mark next to the "No 66" baseball. This print dot does not appear on the raw card.

$6K raw and BVG7 look the same to me...

to me they look like the same card, there is a unique spot in background to the left of Teds right ear (the ear on left side of card, id say about 1/4" over from middle of ear) that is on both cards.

I looked at a dozen other cards and cant find another with this same spot.

edited to say, thanks Jon, now I got to look at the back after reading your posts

I see what Jon sees, but also see a couple spots that are the same on both cards, below the handle of the bat on back... between the "LEFT" and "FIELD" is a white spot on both cards, and also right below the "g" in "Height" is another spot on both cards..... I only looked at one other back beside these 2 and it didnt have either spot.

I say its the same card, still .... either way I also say the corners on the images of the $6K card have been doctored even before this BVG card was mentioned.

My experience (sometimes painful) has taught me to always, ALWAYS check the edges under magnification before buying cards from that era that haven't been graded by a reputable grading service. Razor sharp, rather than rough edges are a dead giveaway that a card has been put through a paper press to enlarge it ever so slightly, then cut back down to correct size. Prior to PSA and SGC taking their holds on the hobby, we used to have a dealer in this area who specialized in such cards, taking off-grade examples and "upgrading" them to apparent NMt-Mt or better. Personally, I don't think I'd ever spend 6 grand on an ungraded card. Even if you could check the edges, who carries a black light around with them to check for other touch-ups?

For the buyer's sake, I hope it works out well, but I wouldn't like the odds myself.

Regards,

Larry
