I don't know why I never even checked this out before last night because I've had both of these items for a long time, but anyway I noticed last night while looking through an old Nebraska History magazine a picture of the 1894 Nebraska State League David City team and I also have an 1890s David City single player cabinet photo when I looked it appears that the player on my cabinet photo matches up with a player in the team photo, but I wanted others opinions before I call it conclusive.

Here's the team photo from the magazine
Photobucket

Here's the cabinet photo -it's in rough shape, but you take what you can get.
Photobucket

here are closeups of the player(s) in question.

what do you guys think?

They look different, but the crease through the player's face may be throwing me off.

I'd say it's the same guy. Notice how, in both photos, the player's left eyebrow arches, while the right eyebrow is relatively flat. The mouths match up, also. The eyes too, are pretty distinctive.

Dan, before I scrolled down and saw your two closeups, I compared the single player and the team photo, and thought the two were the same guy too

Do you know the player's name (or any other biographical data)?

I do not Jodi, but I'm thinking I may be able to find the name since the article is annotated. The author names all three African American men so I'm assuming that wherever this photo is housed they have the names of all 11 men pictured.

Thanks all for the opinions so far.

Dan, they appear to be the same person to me too. I noticed the eyebrow thing too.

In my opinion the guy in the cabinet is the bottom right player #3 in the team photo.

The guy in the lower right of the team photo appears to be Johnny Mathis. Well, chances are.

Guess I'm the only one who didn't. The shape of the two men's faces looks a little different, but I may be wrong.

I agree with Barry, I don't think it's the same person. It's the ears that throw me. Perhaps it's the guy directly below?

Dan, on first examination, I also did not think it looked like the same fellow either. Unfortunately, there's no definitive way of being conclusive. The one thing I noticed was the height of their ears in relation to their eyes, but, again, these shots were taken from two angles. If you had a shot of both of them with their mouths open I could probably be of more help.

The one thing I did think, however, is that the guy on the left looks more like Rocco Baldelli than the guy in the second photo, but there's a reason I now wear bifocals.

Greg

note too the height of the left eyebrow

(by the way, none of these opinions would stand the tests of forensics)

Not sure that's a ballplayer from Nebraska at all.
Granddaughter has somebody here convinced he's actually
a Quidditch player from Hogwart's...
