Default The Sporting News Photo Archive at "The Nationals"

I want to personally invite all Net54 members who will be attending the National to come and view The Sporting News collection. The John Rogers archive will be showcasing its latest aquisition of over 300,000 (yes, 300,000) pre 1960 baseball photographs from the Sporting News Archive.

The archive consists of not just photographs. Handwritten letters from pre war players, cabinet photos, original artwork featuring 100's of Hall of Famers, original Charles Conlon photography, etc. will be on hand. For anyone on a limited budget, we have photos priced as low as 5.00 each. My favorite part of the archive has to be the original Charles Conlon glass plate negatives. Select images from the glass plates will be on display including the first image Conlon ever took, the 1904 Christy Mathewson portrait.

Come by and say hello and dig through the photos...yes, we allow you to touch! Besides major league baseball, 1,000's of minor league and semi pro pre war images will be available from every small town imaginable.. For you non baseball collectors, we will have some football, basketball, hockey, and boxing as well. We look forward to unveiling The Sporting News Collection and hope everyone will come by and say "hello".

Booth number 2559 is one of our 8 booths that will house The Sporting News

Thank you in advance!

Wow. Now I wish I had booked a ticket to Baltimore.

Luckily, I have no more space on my walls.

I was told they were all for sale. A massive display. Many boxes.

WOW! The collection is unbelievable! For sure - somthing for everyone, wish I had more time to sift through players I don't collect. Bought a bunch of AMAZING Clemente images. While the prices being asked are higher than these types of photographs have sold for in years past, collectors are "waking up" to how appealing and how short in supply these images are and driving prices up - $100- $1000 for an amazing type 1 photo for which there are likely less than 12-20 copies of to me seems more than reasonable.

Uh... more like $3000+ for desirable images.
How do you arrive at an estimate like 12-20 in existence? That's certainly not true for the $3000+ "in demand" images, which are not that uncommon.

Dave

When you have to price 300,000+ photos I think they threw prices out there as more of a starting point than anything else. I found they were really flexible with their prices. There were several photos I bought that I would talk to them about and tell them where I wanted to be at and why, and most of the time they were more than happy to deal with me. On several occasions I picked up photos for half or less than what was on them, but not always. They are really nice guys and I had a blast going through the stuff.

Also, if you have the time to dig there are things that always go overlooked in these massive collections. I found a few rare early PCL photos and some Baseball postcards that were very valuable mixed in with the photos for a fraction of their true value, but it is daunting when you see how much is there. I bet I looked for 12 hours and probably only saw 1/3 of the Baseball and did not even look through the albums of other sports.

Rhys is exactly right with his assessment. While I probably spent about half the amount of time that he did looking through the boxes of photos, I picked up a few minor league/winter league team photos and John Rodgers was willing to offer a nice discount to significant buyers of his material. I walked away with 5 pieces in all and was very happy with my pick-ups.

Default Please tell me..

that this amazing collection is sorted, somehow!
I really wish I was there to look through it, but it looks as though it would be a nightmare if you are looking for somethng specific and it's not organized...

The boxes you see in the picture above contain folders in alphabetical order. Across the isle were display cases with material of big names players and topics. The high dollar stuff from what I could tell.
Others may add additional detail. I did not spend much time at the exhibit.

If they are in alphabetical order, would someone mind letting me know if there is a folder for photos of Jim O'Rourke? Wish I could be there...
Thanks!
