1967 Topps Disc test proof (cyan/yellow)
So Michael, do you feel like making ONE more small donation??...lol

That is an incredible item and would be the centerpiece of many Clemente collections. Congrats again.

Hah, maybe not this time!

And it is in really great shape too. Maybe the others are also, what with having not been circulated and all, but compared to other uncirculated odds/ends I am more familiar with seeing like salesman panels or the square corner Topps Super proofs, this is very clean (I suppose not having corners to begin with gives round things a head start in that area...)

Mike,

You seem to find a lot of tough RC items! Don’t follow too many auctions so I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot of items. Thanks for sharing.

Cool. Is there any limit to the permutations of the Post panels, or are the various groupings virtually limitless?

Believe I have at least 3 different from 1962 - there is 1 that is more "common" - I don't recall which one right now. I only have 1 from 1961 and 1 from 1963. There are definitely a finite number - I believe it may be 3 for the 62's. Someone possibly on here has a checklist of the different box combinations. I also have a complete box from 1962 - will post pictures when I have a chance - that is a tough item!

Default 1967 and 1968 Discs

Just for fun - here are all the Clemente disc images I have. I own or have owned them all except the 1967 Final process in the SGC holder which is in the fine collection of another board member! The Final process one with the crease not in a holder is the uber rare 1968 - only one I have ever seen!

Howard,

Man, love the pictures of the grouping of the Clemente Topps test discs. Of course the full color progressive proofs are my favorite. I can see a slight difference in the ‘67 and ‘68 discs in regard to the placement of the wording. Are there any other differences to note on the ‘67 and ‘68 Clemente? I believe there would be a few more variations in the printing process that we haven’t seen on Clemente; what do you think?

Almost embarrassed to post this after Rats epic pick up. Nonetheless, I searched through all of the pages in this thread to ensure this item had not already been posted. I have a number of 1971 Pirates ash trays, cups, plates, etc from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I have always wanted one of these and picked it up tonight.

I’ve thought about picking up one of those plates more than once, but for some reason I still haven’t. I’m not sure why, because I think it’s a great piece of RC memorabilia. Ok Mike, you’ve convinced me.

I am amazed that you could see the differences in the scans as they are REALLY small. I stared at the 2 side by side for more than an hour looking for any other differences - I couldn't find any others. Possible there are other color process variations.

WARNING: LONG READ

Earlier this year I purchased a collection of 17 snapshot photos from the 1970 East-West Baseball Classic. The game was played on March 28th. Below are a couple of excerpts taken from the baseball HOF’s website...

“Months after the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a star-studded baseball game was being planned to both celebrate the civil rights leader’s impactful life as well as raise funds for causes that he honored.

Two years later, after overcoming numerous struggles along the way, aspirations became reality when the East-West Major League Baseball Classic, with more than a dozen future members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in action, took place on March 28, 1970.”

“The East-West Major League Baseball Classic, in honor of Dr. King, took place at 2 p.m. before 31,694 fans at Dodger Stadium, including Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, on a sunny and warm Saturday afternoon, March 28, 1970.

Inside in the game program, Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, in an open letter to SCLC President Rev. Ralph Abernathy, wrote, in part, “It seems only right that Baseball should pause today to pay tribute to one of the great disciples of integration and brotherhood, a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“As Commissioner of Baseball, and as an American, I am proud to give my blessing to this classic which demonstrates that Baseball is democracy at work.”

Before the game, a taped recording of part of Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech was played, pitcher Jim “Mudcat” Grant of the Athletics sang a soulful version of the National Anthem from center field, and Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. King, threw out the first ball to Reds Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench.

The crowd was addressed by Rev. H.H. Brookins, president of the SCLC West; Rev. Abernathy, Dr. King’s successor as SCLC president; and Baseball Commissioner Kuhn.

A pair of Hall of Famers served as the day’s managers, with Joe DiMaggio, the great Yankees center fielder, skippering the East squad, assisted by coaches Billy Martin, Satchel Paige, Stan Musial and John McNamara. Roy Campanella, the Brooklyn Dodgers catcher paralyzed in a 1958 automobile accident, managed the West stars, with Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Don Newcombe and Elston Howard serving as his coaches.

Tom Seaver of the Mets, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, picked up the win, starting for the East and tossing three scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory. Working behind home plate was Emmett Ashford, big league baseball’s first African-American umpire.”

I originally picked these up for the Clemente photos with intentions of selling the other photos.

But after receiving the photos and viewing them, I have decided to keep the group intact. I feel it would be a shame to break up the lot after almost 50 years.

There is also a program for the game which I will eventually purchase to accompany the lot. Also, within the past few months, a pinback for this game was offered on eBay. Unfortunately I was the underbidder, so that’s another one I’ll have to keep an eye out for.

If anyone would like to see closeups of other photos (a lot of other HOFers), let me know and I’ll post them later.

I agree with keeping them together if you can.

It is the more classy move, since the photos tell a better story together.

Default East-West

Those are my type of snapshot photos; look to be professionally taken AND in color. Does there happen to be any writing on the back? If you have an opportunity I’d like to see the F. Robby a tad closer? Looks like a cool shot and I think he’s wearing an old school batting glove.

I think it’s a good idea to keep them together.

Thanks for posting the Frank; such a cool photo. Really like the old batting gloves players started to wear, but not that often. Some of them looked like regular type gloves. Also, some of the few snapshot photos I have do have some type of writing on the back. For some reason I like those even better especially when it documents the player or when/where and possibly the date it occurred. I don’t think Brooks was at this event, but do you know if there was another O’s player participating?

That’s a couple cool looking Clemente snapshots you have as well. Who’s the Pirate standing next to him in the player grouping?

Mark,

Brooks wasn’t there and I’m not sure if there were any other Orioles players in the game. Also, not sure who the other Pirates player is.

Looked up a couple things about the East-West baseball game. I believe the other Oriole player was pitcher Mike Cuellar and that’s likely Willie Stargell with the Pirates pictured.

Man, I love stuff like that!! Awesome!! And it's always funny seeing how Topps once again used a reverse negative on Hank Aaron.

Noticed an ink stain on a 1972 Topps Roberto Clemente "In Action" card is actually a signature. PSA charges over $150+ to authenticate anything of Clemente so looking to hear any thoughts prior to submitting. I'd posted on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, but most people just messaged with offers to buy it rather than any information, so hoping this is a more appropriate place to get answers. And given that he died in 1972 -- generally wondering how many 1972 Topps cards he might have signed that are out there?

Not sure why the photos won't upload, but I placed them into a public dropbox folder so the links should work.

Hi Jason,

I am not clear on exactly what information you are looking for? Legit 1972 Clemente signed cards are uncommon - there are 5 regular issue (#309) 1972 authenticated by PSA and 3 copies of the card you have #310. One of the signed #309's sold in 2011 for about 7k - see below link.

Assuming you believe yours to be authentic (which I have no opinion on as I am no expert in his autograph), I think having it authenticated by PSA is a no brainer. If it comes back authentic and you want to sell it then I would think a high profile auction would be the way to go. If there is something else you wanted to know - just ask.

Howard

Until a few weeks ago these were considered to be pretty rare. I know I paid dearly for mine and still felt lucky to have one. This seller changed that. He said he bought an estate in Arizona and there were "many" of these in a box.

Here’s an item you rarely see (actually the only one I’ve seen). It ended recently on eBay, and unfortunately was well over what my snipe would have been. Maybe a board member won it. Thought some of you would enjoy seeing this.

Default I missed it!!

I know the winner - he emailed me this morning. Sadly I also had the seller of the box "saved". Just never saw it till I saw his email this morning. Also the only time I've seen this item.

Default A bunch of great Clemente items on ebay

If my posting this info here bothers anyone let me know and I will not do it again. I just listed a bunch of great Clemente items on ebay:
Willing to work out a deal off ebay for anything with no bids.

Ps. For those who may not have heard:

We lost Vera Cristina Zabala Clemente on November 16th - RIP Sweet woman - condolences to family and friends.

Not sure if any of you collect print error cards but avoid this Clemente like the plague. There is a 99.99% chance it is faded and the .01% it is real is walking through the door on the way out. 1958 Topps fade the yellow off very easy and this has all the signs of being sun faded. Especially the dirty looking area that should be yellow.

I am selling a REAL missing yellow Clemente so was looking to see if there was anything listed on eBay when I seen this thing.

Ben,

I think I’m in agreement as to the faded 1958 Topps card.

Here’s a newer purchase. Have never seen another, and didn’t know it existed until I saw this example. Surprised by the relatively large size as it measures 25” x 30” unfolded.
